My sister and I were making the cake for my nephew's wedding in Fresno. Since we live in Sacramento, transporting the cakes and all the necessary supplies for putting it together was not only stressful, but a huge responsibility! We seemed to have everything well organized in a chaotic way, but then the subject came up at how we would stack the heavy cakes on top of each other without doing it damage. My thought was that maybe we could look for some large heavy duty cake spatulas that would make it easier for us to slide and stack the layers on top of each tier. After checking our Yelp app, we happily discovered that a cake supply store was located very close to our hotel. We also thought that we should get some more buttercream frosting in case we had to do damage control on the cake. Upon entering the store, we received friendly greetings right away with an offer of help if we needed it. This place is pretty nice inside, and had a large inventory of cake and baking supplies for all occasions. It was fun browsing the aisles, getting old and new decorating ideas. Prices are average to what I have seen elsewhere. They did not carry the large spatulas we were looking for, so we looked for a plan B. After studying several different cake plate ideas that might help out our concerns, the atmosphere seemed not as friendly as before. The employees seemed a little condescending with our questions and when my sister asked if we could borrow their tape measure, we had to take and measure the item at the register counter in front of them, I guess because they were afraid we might pocket the tape measure! The store got a little busier while we were there, so the initial friendliness we first experienced faded more into a forced politeness. I thought it was me, and shrugged it off, but my sister and boyfriend also noticed the shift in vibrations from the staff. We pretty much kept to ourselves while shopping and didn't think we did anything to cause annoyance. Oh well, we won't be back any time soon to worry about it!

She aspires to one day be a chef and Brigitte has been the perfect teacher/mentor/friend for my 11 year old. She is so patient, warm and above all, talented. Her approach to food is amazing, elegant and flavorful without being stuffy. She's capable of cooking a wide range of ethnic meals and has a tremendous understanding of flavor. Her approach to food is simple and uncluttered, but the finished product is always fantastic. I firmly believe that a good part of cooking successfully is instinct and Brigitte's got it. Couple her instinct and technique, and you've got a winning combination. Even better that she's personable, kindhearted and a joy to be around. Literally I had to stand beneath the air duct to cool off. One of the bar tenders didn't smile for 3 hours, really? We were all already sad then to have a "Debby downer" server, ugh she majorly sucked!!! I stiffed her on my tab. Sadly enough the Elks lodge needs major renovation and hopefully won't be back for a very long time.

Raisins, of course, are essential for raisin bread and my sweet Grandma really loved raisin bread! She often had toasted cinnamon swirl raisin bread with her morning coffee looking out the sliding glass doors to the deck over the back yard. I can still smell the cinnamon!!! Sun-Maid has expanded and now offered a line, "Farmstand Reserve," that includes dried mixed berries, sea salt flavored coated banana chips, dried whole cranberries, and sea salt cocoa and caramel dusted raisins. The slogan for Farmstand Reserve is "the Grown up Food Snack." Sun-Maid's raisin bread comes in several flavors including dried mixed berries, dried mango, and California sun-dried raisins. Raisins are a healthy snack choice for children! Sun-Maid offers several fruity raisin snacks: sour watermelon, sour blue raspberry, and sour strawberry. These are made with whole golden raisins enhanced with additional natural flavors. When shopping for raisins, I always look for the red bonnet wearing smiling lady on the sun-maid box!
