We recently celebrated a friend's birthday in Tobyhanna, and I needed a nearby bakery since we…read morewould be driving in from Brooklyn. I was considering ordering a cake from ShopRite until I came across Sweet as Sugar Desserts. I'm so happy I found them because I prefer supporting local businesses, especially when they are POC and women owned. Right off the bat, the customer service was amazing. No more than 2 hours after I submitted the order form online, was I contacted by the proprietor Christiane. After a short email exchange, we spoke on the phone to communicate order specifics and to ensure she understood my "vision." And boy, did she come through! I already had a good sense of her decorating skills, but since there were no other reviews, I really did not know what to expect in terms of flavor. I ordered a tres leche cake with dulce de leche filling, and it frikken delicious!! The cake was perfectly moist, and the flavor of the filling was well balanced with the cake - which with this flavor combo can be overly sweet. But she really killed it and everyone loved it, the birthday girl especially. I couldn't recommend Sweet as Sugar Desserts enough!

Definitely recommend visiting and trying some yummy items. Heads up it is cash only.

I ordered a pie here for Thanksgiving and was told the wrong description of what the pie was made…read moreof. I had to pick up another pie on Thanksgiving. This pie was basically made of paper thin crust with small diced canned apples with pudding. I confirmed with the worker that this pie had regular apple slices like a normal apple pie and she said yes but the top had whip cream on it. She never mentioned anything about the pudding. I called and the shop did nothing to compensate even when I was told the wrong thing. Very disappointed that this is a bakery and the worst pie I've ever eaten.

This place is, from what I hear, a cesspool. I have heard a number of people complain about orders…read morebeing wrong, about products being old/stale, and about how the place is managed by a family that is pure chaos with some family members siphoning money and product out of the bakery for all the wrong reasons. You can hear the family at times talking (profanity) out loud within the bakery, sometimes yelling, which is just inappropriate to do at a business. I have tried their products before and some do, in fact, taste old and stale, as well as some products tasting just outright bland. I can't say that I could ever recommend this place for baked goods. Take the extra time to travel to a different establishment, where products and pricing are much better.
