I had no plan to rent a boat but the fleet looked well cared for (almost new) and I jumped. The crew was really nice and helpful. I took out a "Tritoon"with a 200hp Yamaha. The lake is huge and there is some amazing sightseeing. I found a cove, anchored, finished up some work and then went for a swim. My 2 hour rental flew by and when I arrived back at the dock, the crew was waiting to help dock and replace my used fuel. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. For a spur of the moment adventure it was amazing. I highly recommend Bridgewater Marine.

Ever other boat was passing us in the lake, including every other pontoon boat. The boat itself was clean and worked well but was a bit torn up and dented in places. Only other complaint was the horn and radio not working - supposed to be used to signal danger, etc. They said we had to use the whistle instead of the horn. We asked if we could just get a different boat and the woman replied "I think none of our boats have horns that work."

This is a fun location with several businesses: Virginia Dare Cruises: If you are going to take a tour, you might as well include food ($40 with, $25 without). The trip covers interesting areas around the lake. If I did this again, I would chose Mother's Day or Pirate's Day for fun. The park staffers also join one of the tours to share information about nature and wildlife (you can also get that information at the state park, but it is fun on the boat). Virginia Dare Marina: If you need gas, expect to pump it yourself. There aren't any employees to help tie your boat, so make sure you have someone with you. The area is small and a little tricky to maneuver if it is crowded. Marina store: If you want Great Lake souvenirs, I would go to the shops at Bridgewater Plaza (they have staff at the gas pumps too). The Marina store has limited items. Portside Grill and Bar: You can have breakfast or lunch in your bathing suit. The food is almost like camping with a grill, but it is decent casual grub. Breakfast is around $8 and lunch is approximately $12. Sides are cheap. If you want more space, visit Mangos.

You can purchase popcorn and other snacks for the fish to eat, then all you have to do from there is put your feet in the water and wait.
