Such a great campground. Included in your price is tubing (they drive you and provide everything needed), a petting farm area (free food), an amazing filtered lake, pool, and hiking trail. We stayed Sun-Wed and it wasn't crowded. Liked it so much me are booking for the following week. Super clean, amazing hosts and employees. I really can't say enough! Oh - you'd think being on the River, mosquitos would eat you up. NOT THE CASE! We didn't need to use the pop up once.

    About to go kayaking :)

Well it's been awhile since I've visited but laying in my bed I'm planning another activity packed family camping adventure at crazy horse campground! The staff is friendly and the guests were kind. I had help putting up my tent when I struggled hehe. I enjoyed the poolside Restaurant that served burgers, fries, and other fast foods. We are there both days so we can spend as much time possible swimming, golfing, kayaking, lazy river tubing and visiting the animals. I will be back soon! Enjoy the sunshine, Jennah

Seems nice. Really packed them in on Memorial Day weekend. Campground is clean with most of the bathhouse average or a little better than most. Really nice to have so many activities on site and to have a store with a kitchen and bar. The down side is we we given a site with power and water but the electric was just an outlet, no breaker. First outlet didn't work, second one next to us seemed to work. The water connection was pointed almost straight up in the air and about 4 foot off the ground which made the connection work kind of funky. The main downfall was the wood. You are required to only by their wood but it is so wet, it will not burn! This picture shows our fire of 5 logs, started at 7pm with help of a lot of cardboard, still smoldering at 8:00 the next day! I think with a little more work, this will be a great place!

Crazy Horse Family Campground is the very best!!

Then realized we had 3 more and paid for them. The lady in the office picked up her radio and said, 3 more for that big party. We loaded up and they shuttled us to the start. There were 13 tubes! (Not sure why 13 instead of 12.) The driver said I never got any message about 3 more people (which was not true). He said our kids would have to ride in the cooler tubes (even though the coolers were there) and we could talk to the office at the end. Now the first mistake, the wrong number of tubes, it's fine, mistakes happen. The second mistake, refusing to fix it was annoying. We tubed. It was less than ideal for the kids, but ok. Finished and went to the office. It was closed and locked. Rang bell, waited, rang bell, waited, etc. No answer. (Third mistake) Called next day. Asked for a refund for the tubes we paid for and did not get. The person on the phone kind of scolded me for not dealing with it right away, which felt ridiculous. (Fourth mistake). She said she would check with her boss and call back. Couple days pass, she did not call back. (Fifth mistake). Emailed. No response. (Final mistake). Overall, tubing was ok. Customer service was bad.

The recommendation would be to arrive around 10 am. as it does get crowded. Staff working are very friendly. Fill out the waiver and pay for tubes. At the time of review, the cash price for tubes is $20, and cooler tubes are $10. I believe there was a service charge for paying with credit card. Come with a group and tie your tubes together for a great time! The staff drive you and your tubes to the drop off point. It is about 3 to 4 hours to experience the tubing. Tips 1. Wear water shoes as some areas are rocky. 2. Don't dehydrate! Bring water. Alcohol is allowed in cans. Glass bottles are not allowed. They provide you with garbage bags. Don't be a jerk. Pick up all of your trash. At the end of the route, there are garbage cans for your garbage. 3. Reapply your sunscreen. 4. Our group likes to hit Subway before hitting the campground. Something about a sandwhich in the water hits the spot. 5. Bring a change of clothes, towels, shoes (leave in your car). They have shower areas which are very nice for a campground.

The campground was quiet at night and the seasonal campers were super friendly. The bathroom/shower house was very clean and had plenty of hot water. The staff worked very hard In spite of being so short staffed. The manager Lori was kind and helpful. We rented a golf cart and it was fun and ran well. The park was clean and well maintained. The only thing not perfect was the bed inside our cabin #4. It had a large dip in the middle making sleeping kind of difficult. However floating in that awesome not overly populated pool made it all ok. I highly recommend bringing your family camping there. Whether you have a tent, camper, or choose to rent a cabin. You will have a blast!

Needless to say, for many, many, many years my family made Blackhawk our home-away-from home 3 times a summer. My memories of Blackhawk are all good. There's stories, memories, thoughts and experiences that I would never, ever be able to duplicate anywhere else that I had here. We're talking my first time skinny dipping, hiding in the dryer so my parents wouldn't find me after dark, and seeking cover in the pavilion from tornadoes as we watched the wind and rain rip away and blow around the tents and bits around us. Ahhh, Blackhawk. But this isn't a memoir, so I will stick to the things I know now. "Back in my day" the general store was off the beach, but floods and old age weathered the store and they tore it down. Now the beach looks messy, overused and completely neglected. Campers rarely swim in the lake anymore. This might be because there is now two in-ground pools near the entrance of Indian Village, but I still think the dirty lake is the bee's knees. "Back in my day" the majority of the camp sites were all for transient campers. Now the majority of the campground is permanent sites. There's pros and cons to this. One is that I knew a few people with permanent sites and if you're lucky enough to be in the "in" crowd, you know that having a permanent site and friends all around is like one big family that parties together every single (weekend) night (and the occasional weekday, depending). There is something very special about knowing the right people who have permanent sites here. We're talking late night karting in the woods, drunken bon fires, crazy stories to retell when you're sober in the morning... (Back in my day, they even had a live bear in a cage!) But if you're an unlucky one to not have a permanent site, I can see that Blackhawk would be a pretty boring place if you're in for just the night or two. There's cabins all around now to rent, in Indian Village and near the beach. I've never been inside one and haven't had the pleasure of staying overnight in one, but they look well cared for and large enough for a small family or a group of friends. I love that they put on fun events in the summer, from music to bingo to prom, etc.. It's a fun place if you know where to look, how to get around, and who to hang with. Blackhawk is not nearly as special, clean, or "cool" as it once was when I was younger, but I give it 5-stars because it holds a very special place in my heart. It used to be family run and it was clear they all cared for the grounds well; the point is, they cared. You can tell it's changed hands a few times and even the restaurant is owned by someone separate from the person who owns the grounds. Things seem much more disjointed now then they ever were. My suggestion: stay in Indian Village, on a water site, bring flip-flops for the showers by the beach, bring a comfy chair to people watch, bring a cooler full of beer, ignore the dirty water and dive in to the lake. This place is it!

There are also no garbage cans in the pits, but a dumpster in the parking lot. This campground is made for a more rustic camper, as it has less amenities than your typical state park campground. Only about 30 minutes from Madison this campground offers a pretty tranquil camping experience given it's location and especially given that it's a State campground. No RV's allowed and you have to trek in all your gear 50-100 yards from the parking lot. Not a huge deal, but apparently inconvenient enough that a lot of people take a pass (fiiiine by me!). I think it's great not having any cars rumble past your campsite at night. All I heard was a rooster and a cow (this isn't exactly the wilderness, people, more like farmland). Set in a grove of old stately oak trees, each campsite has a fire ring and a picnic table. Some are definitely on the sunny side, so feel free to call up the ranger to make sure you end up where you want to. There are bathrooms (well, porto-potties) and well water near the parking lot. You will not be finding any firewood on your own, you'll need to buy it from somewhere local. The gas station sells bundles for $5 but an even better deal is the boy scout troop who sells daily at the campsite. Their number is posted upon your entry so just give them a call to find out what time they're coming by. The campground was only partially full when I was there one August weekend and the ranger said that it usually only fills up (or close to it) on holiday weekends or when there is an event at some nearby concert venue. BOTTOM LINE: I hesitated to even write this review because I don't want this secret jewel to become overrun. Good stuff!!

At 34 years old I still consider that the most fun weekend of my life. So many of my favorite memories include Emerald Acres. We raised hell in Freeport too (sorry residents for the drive by honkings at 2am) oh and I would also like to apologize to the family that lived right by the campground that had that sweet huge trampoline. My friends dared me to go jump on it at about 3am. I did and got a case of the giggles that ended with me peeing my pants...on your trampoline. I am sorry. Thanks Emerald Acres for putting up with me and my friends, had to not let us stay I wouldn't have about 1000 memories that I hold dear to me. We didn't have phone cameras and facebook back then so all I have is memories. Although it would be pretty cool to see pictures and videos of that. lol I am planing on taking my little guy camping there soon. I remember we found the coolest park (I think Krape Park) out that way and I would love to go back.
