Scotland is wonderful and exceedingly gorgeous country, but is not the easiest in which to find a good meal in. This place however wound up providing one of the best meals I've had recently anywhere. It also offers a glorious representation of the incredible bounty of Scottish seafood, that I've come to learn is woefully under appreciated by many Scots themselves, get it together people!
Everything we sampled was uniformly delicious, and exceedingly fresh. The greatest hits/must orders include the namesake mini crab cakes, delicious with little to no filler that would past muster even with a native Baltimorian, and the justifiably lauded perfectly prepared scallops in anchovy browned butter. The Scottish smoked fish plate was very interring and unique, quite a departure in taste and presentation from the Jewish Appetizing style I'm most used to back at home but quite delicious nonetheless. Brilliantly fresh and briny raw oysters and delightful little cockle clams perfectly prepared with fresh Scottish sea greens and chorizo from the icy waters deliciously proved the old adage that the further north you go and the colder the water gets, the more delectable and better the shellfish get. The sleeper hit and stealth favorite dish of the meal for me however, might have been the perfectly prepared and textually ideal squid tempura which the thought of still makes my mouth water and tingle thinking about it now over a week later. The staff was uniformly lovely and professional further enhancing the already magnificent experience of dining here. I have never had the pleasure of visiting the original location, but the new space here is gorgeous, airy and modern, and located in the chicest and loveliest section of Glasgow, the West End, close to the lovely Botanical garden from which this branch get's its name, and which offers a lovely location for a post meal walk to help walk of some of the delicious seafood you have just devoured. If you are lucky enough to be making a visit to this wonderful and quirky city put this place high on you list of MUST visits, particularly if you are a seafood lover, as you should be. read more
