I eat a lot of Mexican food at home and one of the first things I evaluate is the salsa that comes with the chips. It was so good I wanted to drink it; just enough kick and lots of flavor. My chips were also excellent. I had the enchiladas verdes. The sauce was excellent and flavorful. The beans were tasty. The rice was fluffy. The only thing I would say needed improvement was just that the chicken in the enchiladas was in larger chunks, which made it hard to cut through with my fork, but I managed to shovel it in just fine. Staff was friendly. Wait time was zero. My food came out quickly, but I was not rushed as I sat in my little corner and read my book and ate my delicious meal. Cozumel Restaurant was close to our hotel, so we waltzed in for an early dinner this weekend. Lucky us--we got there before the crowd, because by the time we left, there was a line snaking out the door. Clearly, this place is the real deal. Service was next level. Seriously, way better than your average Mexican joint. We were the only ones on the patio, but the staff checked on us so often it was like they were reading our minds--in the best way possible, not like creepy stalkers. Now, the food... oh, the food. I had the pollo chory--thin-as-can-be chicken breast smothered with chorizo and melty cheese. Holy moly, it was a flavor explosion. L was all about his tacos and raved that the margarita hit that perfect sweet spot: tasty and strong enough to knock your socks off. I had an extremely unpleasant and unacceptable experience at Cozumel Independence. I am a strict vegetarian for religious reasons -- I do not eat meat or eggs. I ordered a Veggie Fajita and shockingly found a piece of chicken in my food. That alone is a serious lapse. Because of my beliefs, I could not continue eating from that plate and requested a replacement. What followed was far worse. Instead of handling the situation professionally, a staff member took the plate back to the kitchen and started loudly shouting phrases like "NO CHICKEN," "Do you understand NO CHICKEN?" and "I DON'T EAT CHICKEN." This was shouted repeatedly near the kitchen door where we could clearly hear it, and then again from the billing counter -- not to communicate with the kitchen, but loudly enough for us to hear. It felt mocking, disrespectful, and humiliating. Customer preferences -- especially those tied to religious beliefs -- are not a joke. This behavior was insulting and completely unacceptable. I left feeling embarrassed and regretted choosing this restaurant for lunch. What makes this even more disturbing is that I observed the same waiter speaking politely and respectfully to other customers who were not of my race. That raises serious concerns about discriminatory behavior, whether intentional or not. You have now lost a loyal customer. My family and I were genuine fans of your food, but no food is worth being disrespected or insulted. As always we sat at the bar! We order our food and it came out was very fast less than 15 minutes. I wanted shrimp chimichangas but the server recommended seafood chimichangas they were very flavorful and a lot of food. My husband gets the diablo burrito an is Always satisfied. We went to eat at Cozumel on snow road and it was by far the worst experience I have ever had at Cozumel. We waited at least 30 min for water and had to ask several times. I had the Mexican tacos and although I asked for 2 chicken and 1 steak I was informed that it was not aloud anymore. So I acknowledged and informed the waiter that chicken for all 3 tacos was fine... I was given chicken tacos with steak and chorizo... and the server never came back to see if it was ok... Let me talk about the kids chicken tenders.. or should I ask a 1 piece of fried chicken breast cut into chunks that my daughter said tasted horrible. Food came out and very hot but my friend and I ordered same thing and they were totally different. He took away for me and sort of fixed it but it was so f ing hot I could not eat. We happened in during a down period (3pm) and sat at the bar. Nice bar, decent Mexican beer and tequila selection. Gran Centenario is a favorite, so nice to see it behind the bar. It was even nicer to see it in my class accompanied by a Pacifico with lime. My wife had a Herradura. . We chatted with the owners for a bit. Juan gave us a shot of tequila from the house barrel. Very tasty. He also gave us a tasters of a flavored gin that might go well in a mixed drink, but on its own, tasted like a jolly rancher. They greeted us with a bowl of tortilla chips and a mild and a hot salsa. I had the tacos Al Pastor, and these were great. No chunks of pineapple, which aren't my thing. Corn taco shells. My wife had chicken taquitos. They reminded me of chicken and dumplings with a tasty sauce. Gotta dig up my mom's recipe. Service was great, but the place was mostly empty. Cozumel is a decent place to enjoy some casual Mexican food. I thoroughly enjoyed their margarita selection and found their prices to be quite affordable. However, some of their food lacked flavor. I believe that it's hard to find truly authentic Mexican food in the Cleveland area, There was not much spice in the food. It fell a bit bland for me. However, people who are more accustomed to less spicy food, especially more white washed Mexican food would thoroughly enjoy this location. I personally however, wish that there were spicier options. I think you should go and try this place out and see for yourself what you think. I would recommend it to those, who want to dip their toes into Semi authentic Mexican cuisine. read more

After a quick day trip up to Cleveland it was time to head back to Pittsburgh. On the way out of town we were feeling Mexican and Cozumel was highly rated with lots of reviews. Parking lot was full when we arrived but our group of three was still quickly seated and the waitstaff were quick with drinks and chips and salsa. I've been coming to this location for 6 years, initially on lunch break with corporate coworkers and now with my husband and children. July 21st 2023 was the worst service and food I had ever received. During my visit, my server did not tell me his name. He did not greet me. He did not make eye contact with either of the two of us while ordering. My husband was served expired imitation crab in his seafood entrée, which was either an enchilada or burrito. He stopped eating it shortly after pulling the imitation crab from the tortilla, of which I took a bite (to see if it was just a flavor issue). It was NOT, the fish was very obviously bad and both smelled and looked so. We loved this restaurant, so we did not complain and instead did not finish the dish, paid our tab, tipped, and went about our evening disappointed and unsatisfied. The next day, my husband who had only eaten lightly the previous day began exhibiting signs of food poisoning - vomiting and diarrhea. I called at 12pm on 07/22/2023 to explain they were serving expired fish. The male staff who answered the phone was dismissive of me and told me to "call back Monday" in the middle of explaining they were serving seafood that was making individuals sick. He did not take my name, my number, or even address the issue at hand. This is discouraging, and alarming considering other patrons eating seafood dishes could also become dangerously ill. I will not be returning to this restaurant, which was my go-to the last half-decade, for several months and will be reaching out to the health inspector of Independence to document this occurrence. BE SAFE! SPEAK UP! It's not "just food"! read more

I am not from the area and was visiting family nearby and they chose to have dinner here. I was completely impressed by the service as well.. as others have stated, chips were on the table almost alongside with us. Complimentary salsa. One of the members of our party ordered the queso blanco for the chips and that was to die for. Carne asada gets a 5/5. Red enchiladas were a little dry for my tasting but the flavor was yummy. Who doesn't LOVE Cozumel in Independence! By far the the best of their locations. Family run with exceptional service, from the time they greet you until the time you pay your check! Weather permitted they have a fabulous stone bar with patio pairing for the perfect happy hour. Or, you might want to sit at the inside bar for fast, excellent service. Cozumel is great for two people or twelve, the service is quick, the food is delicious and the price is perfect. Tonight we had three people and coming in on a Friday night we knew to expect a wait. We put our names down and waited about fifteen minutes before we were whisked away to a corner booth. There were birthdays parties and extended happy hours, so it was pretty loud, but it's to be expected, don't let that turn you away. We ordered loaded guacamole made table side, it was delicious. I had the seafood chimichangas and substituted the cheese sauce for the salsa verde and it was delicious. A very nice bite, a little hot, but paired perfect with the shrimp. Next time you are looking for Mexican, head to Cozumel, order a Modelo Especial on draft or a pitcher of margaritas with bottomless chips and salsa for the win. Excellent spot for lunch! I was with a work group in for out of town and we went here for lunch. The parking lot was packed so I was thinking food must be good but I was expecting to wait or for slow service. Wrong! We got seated right away. And they have their lunch system down to a science. Started with great chips and a salsa bowl for each of us we all ordered off the lunch menu. And food was out quick. Must have been 5 minutes or less. I had the enchiladas and they were excellent. A lot of places were closed for Labor Day weekend, not Cozumel!! We were promptly sat upon entry. We elected to sit inside because of the sun shining big on the patio. The food come out pretty fast. My carnitas came out a little bit after my parents meals. The meat was very tender and the pieces were big. Food was overall, very good and filling. The jumbo sangria was lacking alcohol flavor.
