On my journey to Cleethorpes, this place was one of the stand out experiences…read more I was told on good authority, the chap, that this was the place to go for good fish and chips so we ate here on the Saturday evening. Having spent the day taking in all the tourist activities, by 5pm we were really ready for a good solid nosh. And it's a good job we queued when we did, as within about 10 minutes of our arrival, the queue was half way down the street - an accolade to how popular this place is. The décor is cute, with lots of wooden panels, cute booths, and a sort of tea room feel to the upstairs dining area. It's definitely busy, and popular, so if you're a tourist get in quick lest you wait an hour for a table. I believe they do take away, but sitting in is a must unless it's a spectacular day to sit by the sea. The menu is straightforward - the main affair, obviously, is fish and chips. These come in different sizes, but let it be known that the medium is enough to feed a small army. There is a 'smaller appetite menu', if you're afraid of the huge portions, and a pot of tea and bread and butter comes with the fish and chips. Lovely, properly British. I'm not sure if my palate isn't advanced enough to tell the difference between seaside fish and chips, and city fish and chips, but I wasn't sure I could tell. That's not to say it wasn't utterly delicious. The gravy was exquisite, the batter was perfect, and the fish itself was never-ending and scrumptious. And of course, the pot of tea was the perfect accompaniment, although you're able to grab a lager if you can stomach beer alongside filling f&c. I hardly ever trust a cuppa outside my own house, but this was a solid pot. The staff were lovely, hard working, and managed to stay welcoming and friendly in spite of the volume of customers! All in all, a must if you're in town.

HA! It takes a trip across the Atlantic in order to get a first review in this day and age…read more I was in England for a family visit. We stayed in Louth. It was cute and quiet but seriously lacking in decent fish and chips. I kept hearing murmurs that fish had to be from Grimsby in order to be good. Go to Grimsby. If it's not from Grimsby, it's not worth eating. Ok. So where was Grimsby? And isn't this in Cleethorpes, not Grimsby? First day we were here, the day we landed in Humberside, we were whisked away to Cleethorpes for a proper tuck in of fish and chips. I was a little tired and cranky having just sat on an airplane for too long. But hungry. At Steels, there are different sizes of fish to order. Small. Medium. And PIGGY. I had a medium. After all: medium what? It turns out, fish come in different sizes! Who knew? A small fish was a bit bigger than my hand. Still very decent in quantity and high in quality. Medium turned out to be much too big but I ordered it anyway. Twice. It was the length of my forearm and wide as the oval plate. The fish arrive atop a pile of delicious chips. Oh Chips. Oh Chips. And then gravy. Oh gosh. I have a bad bad habit. The fish was nicely fried and even covered in a thin, light batter. The great thing about fried fish is that the batter is tasty when served fresh. And when you take the leftovers home, you can peel off the batter. But let me get back to the gravy. I didn't develop this crush until the last week we were in England. Because gravy makes chips go down even easier. Typically, I can eat one-third a serving of small chips. But serve the chips with gravy? I can suck down that puppy faster than the Kardashians can sell the rights to their anal bleaching. Mushy peas were atomic green. Buttered bread. Something so simple can steal my heart like a Welsh Terrier on a killing spree. And yes, I took all the leftovers home, from the entire table, including the buttered bread. Service here was very very good. Cleethorpes is a seaside town, if you know what I mean. There are many competing fish and chips shops. But this is the one that you queue up for. This is the one where you queue up and wait and wait because it's really quite impressive what they can do with a fry-a-lator.

Its billed as a Japanese restaurant, but they also do Thai and Vietnamese inspired food, so I'd probably call it pan-Asian. We arrived early friday evening and hadn't booked, but they quickly sat us down at a spare table and soon the table was set. The decor is minimalist in a good way - dark modern tables and chairs, clean lines and a lovely mural on the wall. It seats about 30 and when we were there it started to slowly fill up. Soon we had a bowl of crackers on the table and we ordered drinks. The menu is a bit complicated and only printed on plain paper, so they need to make a proper menu up. The food is divided into two sharing platters, tempura, skewers, and more substantial dishes. Me and my partner ordered the £25.00 platter which comes in stages and consists of a selection of their better known dishes. My brother ordered tempura and soon they arrived, all freshly cooked. The batter is light and crispy and the various fillings very fresh. We shared squid, prawns and vegetables. really, really nice. Next came our chicken skewers, small but tasty and with a lovely plum sauce and a small salad side. Then the chef kindly brought over a complimentary plate of king prawn kebabs, which were huge, and flavoursome. They hit the mark. Then our mains arrived. Our sushi platter was enormous. Five or six different varieties, probably 30 pieces in all. And you could tell they were made not long before - nothing like the stuff you get in supermarkets which are normally prepared 2 or 3 days in advance. These were fresh and unctious. My brother and his wife had a noodle dish and salmon with Thai rice respectively. All the way through our meal the attentive and chatty waitresses brought more green tea. Finally having paid our bill and just chatting the waitress offered us a portion of ice cream on the house. Evidently they are always trying out new things and wanted our opinion on some ice creams they had just made. We tried the green tea, and mango, but should have tried the chocolate and chilli as well. All in all a great addition to eating out in Grimsby. London food at Grimsby prices. Well worth a visit.

    Cafe Valerie - Plaite piccata

Cafe Valerie Walked…read morein for an early Tuesday dinner, and was happy to see that the place was about half full. Most of the tables looked reserved, but they were able to accommodate a single. As with most places, I will order off of the menu du jour, assuming the ingredients will be fresh and/or more apt to be "terroir". The leek and potato soup was good. It was actually soupy as opposed to a thick, hot, pasty, homogeneously blended "soup", which can be good, but it seems like every restaurant goes for this style (I'm still hoping I can get a soup that is a simple rustic broth with pasta and bits of veggie... somewhere - I make it myself when I have to :). There was texture within a lightly cheese flavored broth - a good combination. Again, the food is light on salt - a refreshing change from the states. Main was a pan fried Plaice (flat fish) in a piccata sauce. The fish was cooked perfectly, flakey. The sauce was a tad dry, but still ample enough. It came with a light salad and potatoes (as pictured). Service was prompt and efficient. I didn't have to wait long for any course and it seemed that each course came when I was ready to have it - I'm pretty easy and not too fussy however., and it wasn't overly busy. The bill was a little slow to come, but no worries. Apparently you have to pay at the register, good to know. The place filled up quite a bit by the time I left. It was a tad hot sitting near the kitchen and got hotter when more bodies came in. The inside is simple and clean. I'm not a fan of cluttered and overly ornate interiors. Places like this appeal to my style of simplicity and minimalism. This will be a repeat for sure.

The chicken tikka butter masala is rich, balanced, and deeply comforting, layered with flavor rather than heat for heat's sake. The meat samosas arrive perfectly crisp with a spiced filling that tastes fresh and intentional, not mass produced. The mixed kebabs are the real showstopper, tender, smoky, and seasoned with confidence. Service is warm, polished, and unhurried, exactly how a proper dining experience should feel. This is classic Indian cuisine done right, and one of the finest Indian restaurants not just in Cleethorpes, but across Lincolnshire.

They offer free delivery within 3 miles, and the prices are quite reasonable. I just moved in next door and will be making my way through the menu in the weeks to come. That, and it looks like I have to introduce Cleethorpes to yelp...or is it yelp to Cleethorpes? It's nice to move to a new city and get to put it on the yelp map. Thus far I've had the vindaloo, balti, masala, korma and a few takes on their naan. All was very good. The vindaloo is listed as 5 stars on heat, but I found that it wasn't very hot at all. My (American) palate may be tempered when it comes to heat however. I've had some pretty hot Thai and Mexican food in my day. The balti was my favorite thus far, with quite a complex flavor and nice chunks of vegetables to go along with the meat. I'm still a rookie when it comes to Indian food, but I'm learning fast and will shed that label soon enough. I'm making my rounds to some of the other Indian restaurants in the area.
