I feel like these guys don't really understand the concept of exchanging goods for services. Getting Cox to do business has made me feel like an awkward preteen trying to get a date to the dance: call after call with no calls back, hours waiting by the phone dreading the inevitable no-show, then, of course, the let down of no knock on the door. I got stood up. Maybe Cox is over at the quarterback's house rewiring his house. Tease. I had an appointment set for 8AM today, Cox's suggestion, not my own. I understand service folks run late and I am most certainly empathic to that, but there's no way I wasn't his first visit of the day. It had been on his calendar for a week. I am fine with people showing up late. I'm even fine with no-shows. But doing both of these without even the courtesy of calling me? That hurts. read more

For the life of us we couldn't figure out why our electrical outlets on our kitchen island weren't working. I called Cox electric. The gentleman I spoke to patiently listened to me and our problem, asked appropriate questions and then confidently encouraged me to check again for an outlet in the kitchen with a reset button. He then said he'd be happy to come out and take a look, but there'd be a service fee. He emphasized his desire to save us the cost and kindly, respectfully nudged me to take a second look for the reset outlet. Low and behold, hidden behind a picture frame was the very outlet he instructed me to search for. What a Godsend. Can't thank Cox electric enough for taking the time to help us resolve the issue over the phone. This was my first time hiring electricians to work on my first home. It's an old 20s house that was converted from a triplex, so there are some caveats and weirdnesses electricians may run into. James Cox came recommended by two of my closest friends. He did some under-the-cabinet lighting for them, and it looked like it had been done with love and care. I had a hard time getting ahold of them at first; I think my friend had given me the wrong number. When I finally did get ahold of them, they were eager to come out and give me an estimate. James helped brainstorm through the things I was requesting and trying to decide on, and he was very knowledgable. A good example was that I'd been thinking of adding over-the-cabinet lighting since there's a space between the ceiling and the cabinets in my kitchen. He took the time to discuss with me the pro's and con's of the different light types I could use, and why some would be better for my purposes than others. I could tell he was enthusiastic about this stuff, and he told me specifically he liked the idea of branching out beyond just electricity. There were a few gripes. The first was that James was late to the initial meeting, and he didn't call. After about half an hour I called to see if he was on his way. He was, and apologized for not calling. If he would have originally said, "Between 9am and 11am" instead of "At 9am" I would have expected this, but that wasn't the case. It wasn't too big of a deal however, since I work from home. On the day the work was scheduled, the guy who James sent out to do the actual work was also late... but this time by like an hour or something. However, he was friendly and obviously knew his stuff. The only other complaint I had was that the job was botched a little bit. The walls I have upstairs in my house (where some of the work was being done) are extremely thin... maybe around half-a-foot. I didn't know this, and neither did he. So when he attempted to drill through the attic floor to snake the electrical cords through, he poked a hole in the ceiling. This was an easy mistake to make, but he made it three times, all in separate places. To his credit, he left and came back with putty and spray texture, and stayed late to patch the hole up and try to make it match the rest of the texture on the walls. He swept up a little bit, but I still had drywall dust on my things and now have conspicuous white spaces that I need to paint over. Over all, I'm happy with the work they did. I think the lateness is just the nature of the beast with contractors sometimes, and the thin walls were curveballs no electrician could have anticipated. The combination of these things made the whole experience less than stellar, but I'd probably hire them again. read more

James is consistantly ON TIME and straightforward in approach, he eliminates all the shadiness that skilled tradesmen are often plagued with. His genuine and straightforward nature is also reflected by his billing and while he likely isn't the least expensive, is certainly competitive and will get the job done correctly. Cox I hired Cox Electric to fix items found during the inspection of an old house I bought. The washer and dryer were not hooked up by the movers because the dryer cord did not match the outlet. Cox replaced the cord and reminded me that someone had to attach the dryer exhaust hose. He caught me off guard because the washer and dryer are in a tight space and I knew nobody could not get to the dryer without moving the washer. It would have been so easy to attach the exhaust hose while he was working there. I did not ask, I just assumed he would do that. On top of that the water to the washer was not turned on. I paid Cox $275.00 to install 3 nest smoke detectors but they never got connected to my phone which needs to be done prior to attaching them to the ceiling. After waiting two weeks for another electrician to "try to get by", I called Cox Electric on a Thursday afternoon. James Cox answered and said he could come by Friday to look at the project. Not only did he keep the appointment, he even offered to come earlier. I showed him the job, and Monday I received an itemized bid via email. I approved it instantly and he came out Wednesday with two workers who finished the agreed-upon work in a day. Called Cox electric and spoke with James on Jan 11, 2021. Asked him for a quote on installation of a transfer switch in my home. After detailing for James what a transfer switch is used for??? He shared he needed to price out parts and would call me back later in the day. 17 Days later no word from James. Found another local electrician to complete the job. After reading additional reviews of Cox, I can see the ones detailing lack of communication and timeliness are correct. Glad I didn't let him waste any more of my time. read more

We had nine recessed lights installed and a ceiling fan moved in our living room. Due to communication problem on both our parts, they cut the holes for the recessed lights in the wrong places on the ceiling. To James' defense he was very willing to correct the error and make it right, including discounting the fee since it would cost more to get the drywall repaired. Overall the work was good and expedient and finished within a day, including having to redo the holes (basically starting over). read more

We recently built a studio addition and needed electricity installed. Like most people, we really researched the ins and outs of the project so that we would be able to understand how to explain our needs to our electrician, vice versa, and ultimately not be taken by those who may be scrupulous or incompetent. We contacted nearly a dozen companies, some big and some solo with mixed results. After getting about half a dozen out to our project for bids, we became more familiar with those who charged us more merely because of their big name (translated to mean that you would be paying for their overhead) and the size of our project (small) to those who wanted to do the work but did not want to pull permits. We randomly stumbled across James Cox and his company on Yelp. We were hesitant initially, based on the limited reviews, but that didn't stop us. James was prompt and came over when promised to bid on our project. We explained what we needed and he took the time to explain the process to us and recommended a few options we hadn't thought about. He then worked up a very fair bid based on what we had requested. We learned that James had several years experience at a big company prior to starting his own company. We really respected the fact that he was a small business owner, a straight forward kind of guy, and you could tell that he took pride in his work and that he was the type of person in which his reputation meant everything. James and his crew came out to begin work on our project. They handled everything with the City of Austin regarding permitting and we never had to do anything on that end. He and his crew appeared on time as promised. His crew was polite, worked diligently, and when they made any mistakes (which amounted to 1 very small mistake in cutting into a sprinkler line), they acknowledged it and corrected it promptly. They cleaned up after themselves and were very courteous to my entire family. Because the project spanned several weeks and in phases, James did not insist on payment upfront, but requested payment in installments based on meeting certain work milestones with the final payment contingent upon satisfaction of the work and passing of the final city inspection. Contacting James has been easy as he responds to both phone and e-mails. We have been really pleased with James and his crew. They are true professionals and very skilled in their craft. They are competent, honest, and take the time to listen and to provide explanation as to their work and your project. It's true that a good electrician is hard to find, but I don't think you would be disappointed if you went with this company. I would use James again and would recommend him without reservation to any of my friends, co-workers, and/or family members. read more

Cox Electric were a life saver last night. Around 11:30 pm we began to notice a burning smell in the house. It smelled like melting plastic. We began to search for the problem and my husband noticed the breaker was hot. We immediately shut all electric off and searched for a 24/7 electrician. We called them around 12:30 and they arrived within 30 minutes. They spent well over an hour in the house searching every outlet, breaker box, even crawled up into our attic. Very thorough! We found out the problem was actually with our HVAC. Cox Electric was next, and they were very friendly and came out to give me a free estimate (installing new lights and ceiling fan). James (the owner) was very easy-going and did a great job explaining the various options available to me. While I didn't get a second opinion, I felt his prices were very reasonable and I asked him to do the work. James and his assistant arrived on time and did the work VERY quickly. I got Cox Electric recommendation from my brother-in-law who used James and Cox Electric in the past. I spoke with James about some of my electrical needs on a house I own in Austin and we scheduled an appointment a few days later. The needs included GFCI plugs to be installed in five locations. I live in Seattle and own this home remotely so it can be really tricky dealing with residential needs being an owner far away. He sent Doug out who patiently discussed with me what my real needs were: two GFCIs. Per my request, he also check a few smoke alarms and my rain sensor in the backyard. Where a lot of electricians would have charged me for the five GFCI plugs that I thought I needed, Doug was very honest and forthright in telling me that three out of the five were actually connected to other GFCIs in the area and therefore didn't need replacing. I appreciate the work that Doug did and really appreciate the honesty and fair price. Thank you James and Doug for such fine work!!
