10/26/17 I was in NZ…read morefor the month of October, and this is one of the restaurants that popped up on my Yelp radar. Since I am from the states, and grew up not too far from K.C. I thought I would check it out. l took the bus out there, and it was a very comfortable and scenic ride. The restaurant is located in an area of Wellington known as the Lower Hutt, and located along the main strip. There are lots of little boutique shops and ethic restaurants. I actually found a cute set of wooden toy trucks and a tea set. Uncle Mike's is owned by an American who is from K.C., and just like Texans and Southerns, the folks from K. C. take their BBQ serious. I had the place to myself. It was very clean and had on display iconic American symbols. I elected to have ribs, beans, and fries. The BBQ is wet style, and it's pretty good. I prefer a dry rub with sauce on the side. Nonetheless, it was worth the trip; the beans were really good. When I go back, I plan to stop in again. Uncle Mike's wife was my hostess, and I enjoyed my conversation with her, and hearing her and Mike's story. I hope I convinced her to come visit the states...overall Lower Hutt is a Good place to eat and shop.

I never thought I'd get down-home Kansas City style BBQ in New Zealand of all places. Smoked, tender, juicy, fall-off-the-bone meat, with a killer sticky, tangy sauce that will make you want to gnaw your fingers off. The bullet is in the smoke, though. Holy crap, that's one helluva smoker they must have in the kitchen because you can taste the applewood right down to the bone. I was gnawing on that bone, I ain't gonna lie. The BBQ is brutally good. It's that good folks. I'm a blue-blooded American girl who loves her Southern BBQ. I prefer Louisiana versus Texas (wet vs. dry), but I think Uncle Mike may have converted me into a Kansas City fanatic. The portions are all-American, so the half rack was more than enough for little ol' me. My Kiwi partner chowed on some brisket bits drenched in sauce in a soft roll that was also damn good. Decent prices for the quality and portion size. Very nice and earnest service from the super-smiley server and his side-kick. We never felt underserved. p.s. We tried the buffalo wings and they were also authentic Buffalo, NY style wings. Spicy, tangy, with a refreshing dill-ranch dip on the side. I wish they had some celery sticks instead of a green salad on the side because that would have been even better and more NY...dipping is key!

When we saw it pop up on yelp we weren't sure if it was really open since it only had 1 review and no pictures. But since the review was pretty fresh we took a chance. When we arrived near by we parked and started following the GPS. It is located in the back of a courtyard area. It's a bit hidden but there a few signs pointing. Also, follow the meat fragrance! When you get inside, they had aluminum foil for you to put on top of the grill. First time, I had seen this technique used, but it makes sense. Instead of replacing the grill, they just replace pieces of aluminum foil. They clean it at the end but at least throughout the meal you don't have to get a new grill. All of their meats was delicious, but our favorite was the pork belly. They also had a wide variety of sides and other traditional dishes on the buffet line. I thoroughly enjoyed their korean fried chicken. They only brought out small batches so when they refilled you had to jump on it. Value was definitely there.

There are meats from brisket, spicy pork, pork belly, bulgogi and also ban chan dishes like kimchee, seaweed, broccoli, fish cake. Everything I had was similar to the one back home. But honestly it could be a little bit better. Back home in Hawaii gen bbq is more flavorful with the sauce as they have green tea salt, sweet soy sauce and sesame oil dipping sauce. It could be more tasty with the right sauce. Oh and the soju is on point as well. But this place is not bad I defiantly would recommend if your craving all you can eat.

After hearing the team behind Logan Brown had opened another establishment in Wellington, I had to…read moretry it during my visit. In short, I'm giving this a mid-range review because of the service, and because the food was only okay. A bustling Saturday evening, and having only opened recently could be the reason for the not so good service, but I would've thought a month was enough time to iron out the kinks. Initially told the wait would be 45mins for a table of 6, we ended up waiting nearly 1 hour 45 minutes. Normally, I would've left to dine at another establishment, but as I mentioned above, I was very keen to try the food. After checking with the hostess a couple of times (after the initial 45 minute wait), she tried her best to be accommodating by taking our food orders early so they would be ready when we finally sat down. Unfortunately, the food wasn't worth the wait: Ribs with hoisin-lime sauce fell away from the bone as if they'd been paid good attention to, but they were a little dry. Japanese fried chicken- good salt and pepper taste, with slightly soggy coating. Chicken was nice and tender. Bavette steak- nice flame grill char, cooked very well. Fennel Apple slaw- nice, but a little bland. To summarise, the price of food here is great if you're looking to order small plates to share, I don't think the portions of the mains were suited to their higher prices. The food here is decent, but if I had to wait a long time again, I wouldn't think twice about finding somewhere else to dine. As I said above, my experience could be a one off, which is why I've given three stars and not less. In a city with amazing dining options, grill meats beer will need to pick up their game if they are in it for the long haul.i

I came here specifically to have ribs, and I was not disappointed. I had the hoisin sauce, which was sticky and salty, and really good. I also had the onion knots on the side which I've never had anything quite like it. They're like curry flavored battered onions. The one thing I wish I had was some hot sauce for those ribs. Would come back here again, and also recommend for others to try.

It is great for a nice dinner to sit down and enjoy a meal. We ordered quite a few appetizers and entrees to share as this was our last night here. We started with some raw oysters, smoke fish croquette ($9.50 each), focaccia bread ($9) with artichoke dip ($12), seafood chowder ($30), and the beef tartare ($28). Our favorites were probably the oysters and the focaccia bread with the spread. The oysters were fresh and we enjoyed trying them all. The focaccia bread went great with the spread as the bread was warm and the spinach dip was a nice cool dip to match. The bread was also perfect to dip in the chowder. For the entrees, we ordered a side of green beans ($14), fettuccine ($27|$37), Lumina Lamb Backstrap ($19 per 100g), and the Japanese wagyu ($85 per 100g). Our favorite out of everything was the wagyu. The lamb was delicious but it's not comparison after you have a bite of the wagyu. The Wagyu was cooked perfectly. The meat was not too thick of a piece to cut. The green beans were a great side to go along with the meal. The almonds added a nice crunch to the green beans. Overall, we enjoyed our meal very much. We felt that this restaurant was a perfect way to end our stay in Wellington!
