Pretty good - fresh flavors with a variety of choices in a fun, casual atmosphere. It took a while for our food to come out, but otherwise service was friendly and polite. My wife got the breakfast burrito, opting not to add anything to the black bean base. Taste was fresh if not a bit bland, and while the burrito is a pretty decent sized serving, it does not come with anything as a side. That was the same for my Pork PoBoy. It had a good fresh flavor, but also comes solo, and was only moderately sized. Prices are OK for what you get given where you are, but you may want to opt for a side if you are hungry. Lots of people around us were getting shakes and they looked good if you're in the mood for that. Coming from the US, this restaurant had great options on the menu that reminded us of food from the states. I really haven't found tacos that are very good in NZ so I risked it by ordering the fish tacos. Wow, the risk paid off, it was absolutely delicious!!! My husband ordered the Cuban sandwich and he thought it was also very good!! The only negative is my kids didn't love the chicken tenders kids meals, but they are so picky! I thought it tasted fine and we liked the curly fries. I would definitely come back here to try other items on the menu, although I could use more of those fish tacos right about now! read more

I've been coming here a long time. However this time was different, so different I had to enquire if it had changed hands. It has. It's not the same. The Thick shake was flavourless, these were always icy cold, thick and flavoursome. Sigh. But the worst was the ribs. They used to be the best in Wellington. Now someone decided to replace the baby ribs with fewer leaner ribs. Nowhere near as nice. My son had chicken tacos that were filled with shredded lettuce mostly. We won't be back. I love the atmosphere of this place, with plastic wrestlers swinging from the lampshades and kids drawings lining the walls. I ordered the chicken salad. A LOT of dressing was used, should've asked for it on the side. Also, was a small portion though for an equally small price so I guess that's fair. Had a bite of a beignet which was sinfully delicious. Overall, highly recommend. Lotsa great people watching from outside too (and within reach of free wifi). read more

Huevos rancheros can be prepared in so many ways. I've sampled more than a few, especially in the American Southwest, so I was curious to sample a kiwi version. First, as always, the long dark did not disappoint. After six weeks in NZ I have yet to be served anything but an excellent cuppa. The huevos rancheros was conventional in preparation but excellent in execution! Egg yolks a perfect gooiness but not runny. Obviously fried slowly and not to a crispy plastic. The generous serving of black beans were the best ever. Although skimpy in amount served, the pico de gallo ("salsa") and guacamole made in house and first-rate. read more

Pretty good. Not cheap, but then again, New Zealand isn't cheap. Very good service. I had gumbo and hush puppies. The gumbo was fine and I ate it all, though it still didn't have the "character" or the "zest" that one would expect in the American Southeast. The hush puppies, however, were amazing. Well done, well fried, delicious--so delicious, dipping sauce isn't necessary unless you just want it. I even told the cashier that those hush puppies were the best I've ever had outside the States, and that seemed to make her day. Worth the visit and a meal. read more

I walked by this place in the evening and it was packed, with a lineup out the door. Came back just after opening time for breakfast. Had the Big J's Breakfast... very good! Fresh ingredients and homemade multigrain sourdough bread. Best bacon I've had in ages. Will definitely be back next time I'm in Wellington. read more

This place was recommended to us for vegan and non vegan cuisine. We stopped in for lunch while we were in town. The service was pretty decent and attentive. The food was not that impressive. I gather they specialize in Southern cuisine, which is very tangy and flavorful. The fried chicken that I tried was not. The texture of the coating was good and it was white meat, but incredibly bland in taste. I dipped in the sauce more than I normally would. After hearing a whole heap about this place, I finally managed to visit on my last trip to the fine city that is Wellington. Located on the busy Courtenay Place - near the Embassy theatre end. Eclectic furnishings inside, with its miss matched tables and chairs, give it a relaxed and well loved feel. My vist was at the end of my stay and well, it's safe to say I'd been eating out a lot during my visit (when in Rome...). All I could squeeze in was some pumpkin pie! Despite watching many an American tv show and movie featuring this Thanksgiving staple, I had never actually tried it before. And while it wasn't really what I had in mind of what I thought it would be like - I did really enjoy it. Thanks Sweet Mother's Kitchen for enabling me to fulfill my ambition of finally tasting this delicacy. I hear they do a really good brunch also - so check out the menu for yourself and stop by when you are next in the city. read more

They do a pretty good job. The hushpuppies are excellent! The prawn Poboy is probably the closest thing to real cajun we had, but the red beans and rice is pretty close. We will definitely be going back to sample more of the menu. read more

So much character, but a big disappointment with the food. If you stripped out all the decorations from this cafe, the room would be hideous with its office-style ceiling panels and reinforced glass, but the owners and staff have done an amazing job making this a destination; somewhere worth popping your head in even if you don't eat anything. If you just want a slice of cake and some tea, SMK is brilliant, too - you can't cock up cake and tea. Coffee...well, if you're not picky. However, if you want a meal, think again. It's not the price - that's OK - it's just the overall quality really has gone downhill. At the last visit I ate Flossy's Favourite (or something like that) for breakfast. Potato hash - tasted like it was cooked in Castrol GTX. Creamy mushrooms - not creamy. Black beans - fine but already lukewarm by the time I got it. The serving team are pretty good as far as restaurants go, so no real complaints there, but there's something amiss in the kitchen. So, I'll still go there when I want a peppermint tea and a brownie, but there are a multitude of much better breakfast places in Wellington. read more

They have a lovely seating area outside where you can people watch to your heart's content and a couple of nice heaters to warm you up a bit. This was the first place I had a cup of coffee in Wellington and I was not disappointed. I had a flat white and my husband had the long black. Both were perfect. Service was very prompt and polite. The menu has a great selection and the prices are reasonable. You'll find a nice mix of people there. I miss that Wellington vibe. read more

This place is a disappointment. This place seems to be advertising itself as Mexican, where it really is just bland cooked food. In order to appreciate Mexican food I believe people should avoid this place as it is just subpar. We ordered fish tacos and a Casadia which both were underwhelming And had no flavour whatsoever even though advertising to have Indian and Mexican spices. We had the burger and it was huge and absolutely fantastic. The curly fries were so good and the service was fast despite them being completely full at mid afternoon. One thing I will say is that the tables are very close together, I felt like I was involved in the conversation of the couple next to us and when the waitress came to serve them, we had a face full of... the back of her.
