It opened in 1988 and while the neighborhood has changed (and calmed down a bit) and the patrons have changed (and are a bit more mainstream), it's a lively little spot with a fun vibe. Food is served around the clock starting with pastries and pancakes in the morning and moving to burgers and nachos later in the day. What's awesome about Midnight Espresso is that they are open late. Way late. 7:30 am weekdays and 8:00 on weekends, closing at 1:00 am. There's music, there's a fun vibe, there's some history. Five stars. This was the best flat white I had all week across five cities of New Zealand. [Review 468 of 2024 - 119 in New Zealand - round number 21500 overall]

This place was cozy and eclectic with a chalkboard menu, displays of food and pastries, and people coming in and out for breakfast. My friend and I were impressed with the selection of food, lots of vegetarian and vegan options. My Midnight Big Brekky was really good and perfect for the day. Note: they don't have almond milk, but they do have oat and soy milk options.

Hubby and I came here for lunch after seeing how busy it was over the lunch hour on a weekday. We ordered the fruit crepe which was absolutely beautiful with whipped cream. The crepe was beautifully cooked with a slight crisp on the edges, and the fruit (strawberries, kiwis and bananas) were all served fresh alongside whipped cream. For our savory dish, we ordered the mixed platter with in house smoked salmon, green lipped mussels, fries and mesclun salad which we devoured in under 5 minutes. All in all, this meal was the highlight of our day in Wellington and we'd happily come back if given the chance. BONUS: Free WiFi

This is the new Brittany who has speared a spot on the block, since my last visit to Welly!…read more A great new cafe in down-town Welly. The service isn't all that fast but who cares, the staff are friendly and passionate enough about French regional cuisine to make up for it! It was the perfect spot for a lunch-time catch up with my sis-in-law who works for Adventure Travel across the road! It wasn't easy making a decision, we couldn't decide if we wanted to embark on a quick escape to Burgundy via the Beef Bourguignon or take a trip to the French Alps via the Gratin Dauphinois! In the end, we settled for neither and opted for steaming, hot bowls of authentic French onion soup, most generously topped with the grilled, gooey goodness of Gruyere cheese! From there, we journeyed onto the Western point of Brittany via their famous galettes! With over seven options to choose from, the crepes definitely rule this place! Bonjour et bienvenue au Cafe Breton!
