In a town as small as Wellington competition can be tough. We had a Baja fish taco. Pulled pork slider and breakfast taco with potato hash browns. In short the food was very bland (unfortunately). My fish taco said it had jalapeño sauce but lacked any form of spice or taste (yes, all we could taste was the pineapple in the pulled pork taco). If you are a fan of southern food and like american taco style cuisine you will understand that the soft tortilla makes the taco. Home made is the only way to go as shop bought tortillas have a dry taste (oh and the Baja fish was dry). In short this place has a long way to go to compete with sweet Mothers Kitchen, mostly in the food and atmosphere. They have airline chairs though!

Small gumbo and side of fries.

The food is interesting and used to be really good but along the way they've adjusted their recipes or something. Their fish tacos used to be the best in town but are just ok now. Really casual atmosphere and the owner is always about and friendly. If you love gumbo, fried chicken, tacos then check them out.

Had dinner here last night. It was their closing time but we were still invited in to order. Made feel very welcome and owner checked in with us a number of times to make sure we were ok. We ordered more then we needed just to try a number of things. The steak and the gumbo were our favourite dishes. You will be spoil for milkshake flavour choices. Next time we are going back for brunch to try the day menu.

Chicken and waffles, & Cajun chips were pretty amazing. My friend would like to note that he ate all his chips gracefully and did not drop one.

Fun decor, good food, good service. Chicken, waffle's were excellent, fries were amazing. Not for the health conscious.

Their pulled pork wasn't as I expected (I'm from the USA "South") but I'll give them a pass because I don't expect it to taste like how it is back home.

It is great for a nice dinner to sit down and enjoy a meal. We ordered quite a few appetizers and entrees to share as this was our last night here. We started with some raw oysters, smoke fish croquette ($9.50 each), focaccia bread ($9) with artichoke dip ($12), seafood chowder ($30), and the beef tartare ($28). Our favorites were probably the oysters and the focaccia bread with the spread. The oysters were fresh and we enjoyed trying them all. The focaccia bread went great with the spread as the bread was warm and the spinach dip was a nice cool dip to match. The bread was also perfect to dip in the chowder. For the entrees, we ordered a side of green beans ($14), fettuccine ($27|$37), Lumina Lamb Backstrap ($19 per 100g), and the Japanese wagyu ($85 per 100g). Our favorite out of everything was the wagyu. The lamb was delicious but it's not comparison after you have a bite of the wagyu. The Wagyu was cooked perfectly. The meat was not too thick of a piece to cut. The green beans were a great side to go along with the meal. The almonds added a nice crunch to the green beans. Overall, we enjoyed our meal very much. We felt that this restaurant was a perfect way to end our stay in Wellington!

Tables and booth seating are along the left wall, with a large bar taking up the right. They have a great tap list of local/NZ beer, plus cans/bottles, and food. The night I planned to come in I was running a little late, but even though it was close to closing, they let me in and were welcoming. I also had such a fun time meeting brewers from Australia in town for Beervana; it was a friendly place. The bartenders were great, glassware clean, and I definitely would've been back if I had more time.

I even dare to say, the beer here is better than Aus. Maybe that's too bold a statement, but I'm standing by it. Malthouse is the craft beer haven epicenter of Wellington. With over 150 national and international beers, this beer bar hosts the largest range of beer in NZ. A full tap range, staple beers and rotating ones all keep this beer bar "in the know" with its ever changing selection. Behind the row of taps, is "Malty's Wall" with fridges keeping beers cooled at the right temp, ready for tasting and consuming. Many of NZ beers come from small boutique breweries, which make them harder to find outside of NZ, but Malthouse hosts a great focus on local breweries. The menu is a beer bible. I've never seen one like it. It's leather bound and very extensive, filled with beer choices and all the information to accompany such a vast beer bar. Seating is cozy with both indoor and outdoor options. High tables, bar seats, lounge tables as well. With food options, they've got the perfect munchies which compliment beer. Try their famous Ugly Bread. Or the pizza. I'm a strong believer of great beer bars having pizza. It's something about cheesy tomato bread that goes so well with beer. All in all, this place is hands down, great.

In short, I'm giving this a mid-range review because of the service, and because the food was only okay. A bustling Saturday evening, and having only opened recently could be the reason for the not so good service, but I would've thought a month was enough time to iron out the kinks. Initially told the wait would be 45mins for a table of 6, we ended up waiting nearly 1 hour 45 minutes. Normally, I would've left to dine at another establishment, but as I mentioned above, I was very keen to try the food. After checking with the hostess a couple of times (after the initial 45 minute wait), she tried her best to be accommodating by taking our food orders early so they would be ready when we finally sat down. Unfortunately, the food wasn't worth the wait: Ribs with hoisin-lime sauce fell away from the bone as if they'd been paid good attention to, but they were a little dry. Japanese fried chicken- good salt and pepper taste, with slightly soggy coating. Chicken was nice and tender. Bavette steak- nice flame grill char, cooked very well. Fennel Apple slaw- nice, but a little bland. To summarise, the price of food here is great if you're looking to order small plates to share, I don't think the portions of the mains were suited to their higher prices. The food here is decent, but if I had to wait a long time again, I wouldn't think twice about finding somewhere else to dine. As I said above, my experience could be a one off, which is why I've given three stars and not less. In a city with amazing dining options, grill meats beer will need to pick up their game if they are in it for the long haul.i

I came here specifically to have ribs, and I was not disappointed. I had the hoisin sauce, which was sticky and salty, and really good. Would come back here again, and also recommend for others to try.
