We had been wanting to try Cowboy Dinner Tree for what seems like forever and when an opportunity presented itself, we finally made the trip. From the moment you arrive you feel like your home. Food simply cooked with depth and complexity, expertly executed and perfectly matched with a very heartwarming, attentive and professional staff (thank you Amy). The portions are huge and clearly locally sourced. We had the roasted chicken and steak options. The steak is served medium rare (as it should be) and weighing in at almost 2lbs you'll have plenty of leftovers for a couple days! We also had the privilege of staying in one of their newly built cabins. Quaint and romantic with pops of classic Victorian decor accented with modern touches and a nod to the rustic outdoors. There are no TV's but when you're surrounded by the natural landscape (and a couple of farm cats) you'll find yourself not even thinking of it. We booked a cabin and dinner many months back (with a group of nine other bikers). We showed up a bit early and were directed to our rustic but cozy cabin. Got to talk to the owner for a while, a really nice guy who just wants to work hard and be a good husband and father. Then, on to dinner. You hear about the steaks at this place. But until they set it in front of you, can't really picture it. It's huge. 33 oz. And the rolls. And the beans. And the baked potato. Seriously, a normal person can't eat this all. My wife and I have enough beef left over for about three meals. Staff was super friendly. We left a dollar bill with our motorcycle club name on it. PRO TIP: ask for a side of horseradish...it will clean out your sinuses. read more

This is the second time I've gone to the Cowboy Tree when visiting friends in Sunriver. Even though it's way, way out in the boonies it's worth every mile. And since alcohol is not served nor allowed you can drive way, way back home without worries. This is one of the few times in your life you would like to be a camel (think multiple stomachs). The photo does not have the baked potato (not much smaller than the steak) as I had already filled one stomach and was looking for space! They start you off with salad with a homemade Ranch (seriously might have been the best Ranch ever) or Honey/Mustard dressing, then it's bean "soup." They call it soup but it's actually very juicy and excellent ranch style beans. Did I mention the homemade yeast rolls, piping hot with butter? Then out comes the behemoth steak, cooked exactly as ordered. We were prepared to bring home leftovers but just as we started packing up they brought out the berry shortcake with whipped cream. It would have been rude to say "no thanks." Everything was so good I think we took everything except for the silverware! The service was absolutely wonderful - our waitress was friendly but not obtrusive, very professional and just a delight. Everyone else we interacted with was very Oregon friendly too. And Angel, one of the owners, well Angel is indeed an appropriate given name. And speaking of Angel.... They have two cabins (about to have two more) on the land you can stay the night (after overeating) One cabin is considered the big one. Maybe in comparison to the small one but not big comparing it to anything else. There were three adults and the cabin is an actual cabin from the 1800s. Those people were small!! The bathroom is modern (with a funky old style door) but only one person can fit at a time. We had a coffee pot (with coffee), microwave and some kind of cooler ) not quite an ac but not a swamp cooler either. There is a double bed downstairs in the livingroom/bedroom/diningroom. The upstairs "bedroom" is an attic/loft the requires you ascend/descend on a very tight spiral staircase. It is so small that I was the only one who get upstairs comfortably. That space should definitely be used by children only. Upstairs you will two beds, each below a window. That is the only space there is - bed space. That is it. At night with zero light pollution the sky looked like a postcard. It was so nice and peaceful. There are a couple of cats onsite. One is Otis and he's the official Cowboy Tree mascot. I'm sure if it was possible he'd be shaking your hand as you left. There's another cat (black with no tail) who was abandoned there and poor thing needs a home. She will eventually come up to you if you're sitting outside and she will rub against your leg and quickly scoot off, repeat until you're in bed. If I lived in Oregon I would definitely have brought her home. She's so desperate for affection. I think if any big-hearted, cat, cabin loving person would take her Angel would be grateful. read more

The first course salad and the dressing was delicious absolutely fantastic. The second course with you was either soup or beans I'm not personally a fan but others at the table said both were delicious. The rules oh my gosh those rolls best thing I ate all night (I do wish honey butter was served though). I had the chicken it was chicken and another person at the table got the steak, aside from the fact that it was ginormas it was just a steak. What an experience! I have dreamed about coming here for years and was so excited to snag a reservation on valentine's weekend for the larger cabin and dinner! The salad and bean soup are simple, but tasty and I loved the honey mustard salad dressing (it had a nice kick). Now, we didn't have huge expectations as cooking that large of a steak can be a challenge, but I must say we were blown away by the flavor (perfectly seasoned) and how perfectly cooked it was. Both the chicken and the steak were perfectly seasoned and the chicken was juicy and not overdone! The service was fantastic, it is family friendly if you want to bring kids and everyone working there was friendly and helpful. As for the larger cabin, it was super cute and has everything you need. The chicken was dry! Not worth the $$. The giant piece of meat/sirloin was good, but frankly i would prefer a reasonably sized portion of protein that was prepared well. It is an experience if you're into giant servings of protein. I guess I'm not. If you go i would advise you to steer clear of the chicken. We ate at the most unbelievable place. It's called the Cowboy Tree Diner in the middle Oregon Cowboy Country. You must have reservations and place your order, Steak or Chicken. With the meal you get lemonade or ice tea, salad with homemade dressing , beef barley soup and fresh biscuits and a 30 oz steak & baked potato and dessert. The service was fantastic a beautiful family business. Their 8 yr old son was our waiter (He did outstanding) I heard about this place from Chef Leslie and My friends Bob & Larry and I were not disappointed. Of course we all have plenty of meat to take home. It looks old and dated and it is, but it's very clean & sanitary. The husband cooks these steaks to perfection. My second time here and the first time was a lot of fun and quite enjoyable, this trip not so much. Last year we received a delicious potato soup but this year no soup, very disappointing as I was looking forward to that soup and had told my guests about it. When the four of us asked for more of the yeast rolls our waitress said no you can only have one order. That seems very strange as the tables around us with a party of one and another with a party of two got the same amount of rolls as we did for our party of four. The steak was tougher this time than than the last. I would take a steak that was half its size to have a better quality piece of meat. The dessert is a joke, dry shortcake with some frozen fruit on it. Really that's the best you can do? When we were ready to leave and walked by the kitchen you could see dozens and dozens of trays of rolls just sitting there. This is the restaurant that you bring your out of state friends to for the true Oregon experience...you know the ones who pronounce it OR-E-GONE? Make sure you tell them you are going to dinner and to save room for the meal. LOTS OF ROOM....Plan a late breakfast and then an earlyish dinner so that when you get there you are ready to eat! Make a reservation- during the reservation let the restaurant know what you will have for dinner....Chicken or Steak. That's right...two options... Drive to Silver Lake....Make sure that you have a GPS or very specific directions! If you miss the small turn you will continue driving through Eastern Oregon. Be ready for a drive- it takes about 90 mins from Bend. When you get to the restaurant you feel you have stepped back in time. The restaurant runs on a generator...that's right...no electricity...so no credit cards! But the reason that your bring your friends so far to the middle of Eastern Oregon is for the food. The food is amazing! I love steak and they make the best steak...tasty, tender and HUGE. Definitely bring a cooler so that you can put your doggie bag on ice for the ride home. The homemade biscuits are divine and the cowboy beans are soo yummy...both are a meal all on their own! Dessert is always homemade and it changes depending on what they have! No alcohol at the Cowboy Dinner Tree but all the lemonade, ice tea or coffee you can drink in a cowboy sized mason jar. We came here with a group of 8 and had a great time! Rustic restaurant with portable potties for restrooms! No alcohol served, Service was great as was the food. Family style bean soup and salad with two choices of homemade salad dressing on the side. We had made reservations- this is a must! So each of us knew we had to pick a huge steak or a whole chicken! My chicken had crisp skin and moist insides. The yeast rolls were hot and tasty. The dessert is nothing fancy( shortcake with berries) and the only small portion of the meal. This did not bother me as I was stuffed anyway. Iced tea or lemonade rounded out the meal. I did remember some containers to take home the leftover chicken and steak. I wished I had brought a smaller take out container for the leftover soup! The bean soup was really good and I was sad Ihad not brought enough containers for everything leftover. I was able to put a few rolls in the bags provided by the restaurant. If you don't bring a container they give you these small thin plastic bags. Not like a ziplock bag but more like the cheapest sandwich bag but a little bigger than that. We came during the summer but I think it would be fun to go in the snow! Called this place, made a reservation for two. As I was on the phone, I asked my wife , "do you want a 30 ounce steak or an entire chicken for your entree??" The OMGWTF look she had on her face was priceless. She was speechless for so long it became awkward. So I made a judgement call and went for the red meat for both of us. We drove from our yurt in La Pine state park to this fabled restaurant, it took well over an hour. This place truly is located somewhere in the same zipcode as Bumfuck, Egypt. Yes, you get an entire chicken...and the beef is about the size of a very large book. The amount of flavour here is beyond anything I would have expected. We have been trying to get out here for months (being that it is in the middle of freakin' nowhere, reservations are required, and cards are not accepted, a little planning is needed), so I picked it as my birthday dinner destination. It's a wonderful excuse to get out and see Central Oregon. The DT itself is a rustic rough-wood cabin (shack?) on a little ranch. There is a set price of $30/pp for a four-course dinner and non-alcoholic beverages. PACE YOURSELF is the best advice I have. The iced tea/lemonade, salad, and down-home bean soup were all good, but I was trying to save myself for the main course. You can either have a whole chicken or a 30-oz steak. We ordered one of each for sampling purposes and both were awesome. The chickens are roasted in a rotisserie outside (delicious!), the steaks cooked on a big old grill in the same area. Steaks all come out medium/medium well (a little more done than I like, but I understand why they can't do to-order with their setup), but are still tender and delicious. A high-quality cut o' beef for sure. **on reflection, this place is not recommended for vegetarians. Sorry, folks, this is rural cow country at its best** I left out the rolls, oh the rolls - fluffy (croissant like) and delicious with both the soup and the main course. If you take a later reservation, you can even volunteer to take home some extras. Yum. And I greatly enjoyed the berry shortcake dessert, though I can't believe I had room for it. You take home enough food for at least another full meal, possibly two. Service was cheerful and prompt, despite there being only a waitress or two. My husband and I love this place. It's one of the very few places where he can eat and leave completely stuffed! For $28 you get unlimited iced tea or lemonade, a plate of rolls, fresh green salad with home made dressing, bean soup,baked potato, and a whole chicken or 28-32 ounce steak plus dessert. It's really amazing. And reservations are REQUIRED. If you look around and see money on the walls that's from customers. The cowboy dinner tree collects the money periodically and donates it to the Wounded Warrior Project. The waitress said the last collection was over $1,200.00. Pretty neat little restaurant. Leftovers are taken home in a plastic bag, so If you want to keep the soup I recommend bringing your own Tupperware. If you have AT&T there is no cell service out there. Then, you get family style servings of 2 different soups. Yesterday it way cowboy bean (with perfectly cooked beans and bacon) and corn chowder (which was the soup equivalent of nirvava). Start of with a garden salad then beans or soup depending on what they made that day and amazing roles. Then the main course either a 32oz steak or a small whole chicken with a baked potato. We were given our salad and drinks (lemonade and tea) right away. The bean soup is just okay it was a bit salty but if you like soup then I'm sure you'd like it! The rolls were absolutely amazing!!! I recommend getting extra to bring home. The steak and potatoes are the last to come out and oh my gosh the steak is absolutely huge and you will definitely have leftovers so bring a cooler! This place is amazing. Straight out of an old western flick. The drive is unique, the shaq is in the middle of nowhere. But they put out great food, great cost and service. It's a flat fee, you need reservations. You pre order the food. It's either Steak or Chicken. Both were very nice. If your in the Bend Area. And have some extra time, get on the phone. Make the trip out to Silver Lake. It is only open 3 or 4 days per week. And the place is usually packed. Good Stuff! read more

This place is great. I recommend going hungry. Take a cooler for leftovers. We fed our twin boys (8 y/o) as well as our niece (10 y/o) and still ate beef for three dinners after this. I expected quantity, and not great quality. I was surprised that the steak (or roast - it was huge) was so flavorful, and cooked the way I like it. I couldn't eat 20% of it, thought. The sides were good, beans a little bland for my taste, but the kids liked them. Biscuits were just ok. That honey mustard dressing is AWFUL! We have dinner reservations there again for this Saturday. Looking forward to trying the chicken this time....so stay tuned. I have talked with SEVERAL people who either don't know each other or didn't know I was asking about this place and the responses were all the same- "Go hungry", "You can't finnish it all", "Bring a cooler" and the real kicker "It is unbelievable". They were right in all areas. First, don't let the idea of driving 5-plus miles off the highway into the middle of nowheresville scare you off, or that you must have reservations, or they only have two items on the menu to choose from or the inside of the place is a little "Rustic". Everything else, including the service, offsets them. First, they serve up a fresh slad with two types of homemade dressings; Then, here comes the homemade rolls followed by homemade bean soup- WOW! Just as you are getting filled, here comes the 30 ounce Top Sirloin section with a baked spud. I say section because I have never have seen a steak in a restaurant this big and so well prepared and, yes, I'm familiar with some good ones in the Mid-West. Once you have ate about 1/4 to half of your steak, here comes a just-the-right-size short cake- YUM! They give you plastic bags to loead up the items you could not eat and we did bring a small cooler with some ice in it since we had a little drive ahead of us back to Sunriver. They are not open all year around so pay attention to that if you are planning it and make reservations and plan on either the steak or whole chicken, which looked really good.
