This place is all about the experience. The location is remote as it's a bit of a drive from anywhere. The portions are huge and the atmosphere and service are great. You have to understand ahead of time that you are there on their terms--no credit cards, no sharing, no alcohol, no ala cart, no menu. You get your steak as they cook it. No well or medium well. Plus steak is the size of a small roast. It's so thick that there's no way to get it consistent all the way through. I could only eat about 1/4 of mine, so steak sandwiches and tacos for the rest of the week back home. Yum! I'd recommend going with a group of friends. Good conversations on the ride there and back to accompany the good food. Get reservations in advance. It was amazing to see how full the place was so far away from anyplace.

We try to make a point of eating here every year. It's a ways outa the way, but it's good food and uniqueness make it well worth the trip. Travel south of Lapine, Oregon on hwy 97 to hwy 31 towards Reno, Nevada. It's about an hour from Lapine. Reservations must be made at least 24 hours in advance, and when you call, you place your order for either steak or chicken. The steaks avg between 25-30oz, the chicken is a whole chicken. Dinner is served family style, with salad, followed by bean soup and cast iron baked rolls. Dessert follows the main course. No alcohol is served. The food is absolutely delicious, and the servers are awesome! The restaurant is apparently an old pony express stop and is definitely rugged. They have a gift shop, and outdoor activities such as horse shoes, or lassoing a wooden cow. Lastly, it is cash only. Each person is $50, children 7-13 are $11, kids under 6 are free

They say come hungry for a reason. This place is an experience you don't want to miss. (put it on your bucket list of restaurants to visit). The food is all homemade. It has a very simple menu with only two choices for dinner. 1. Whole Chicken or 2. A Big 30 oz Ribeye Steak. And that's just the main dish The homemade rolls are the best I have ever had. The Cowboy beans were excellent. The berry shortcake was also excellent I had the homemade pink lemonade that was served in a one quart mason jar. The service and staff were great. And the Atmosphere could not be any better for the area and its history. There is a reason you leave happy! YOU MUST MAKE A RESERVATION A FEW MONTHS IN ADVANCE!

Steak dinner

If you haven't been or thinking about going. GO. Such a wonderful atmosphere. Steak was cooked perfectly to our liking and super tender. Tons of food! I ate 4 rolls myself

Unique setting in Oregon's Outback which is unique unto itself in myriad ways. CDT offers great food via a simple menu served in old west ambience. Servings are substantial, leftovers facilitated - bring a cooler. The staff are friendly and amazingly efficient. They've obviously been doing this for a while. This is a place I'll remember for all the right reasons.

The drive there at Spring Break.

Ask the Community - Cowboy Dinner Tree

Are they pet friendly?

Shannon, we only allow service animals in our restaurant and cabins. Thank you for your question.

Can you share a meal?

You cannot share a meal. You get your own entree along with many containers for leftovers. They strongly encourage you to bring along a cooler. In earnest, their pricing is so reasonable, why would anybody try to split a dinner?

I know alcohol is not served at the restaurant, but is it allowable to bring your own wine?

You can bring your own wine, but you can't drink it in the restaurant since they do not have a liquor license. They have some tables outside on the property picnic style where you could go enjoy yourself before or after your reservation.

Is it cash only? How far out do we make reservations and what days are you open and at what Times

they accept any method of payment as long as you have cash. I called in March and the cabins were booked through September so you should call as early as you can set the date. I talked to Angel on the phone and that is exactly what she sounds… Read more

Amazing recommendation for a perfectly cooked steak. They are very knowledgeable friendly people. Hope there management knows that they have two gems right there. Actually all the meal was great. Wife loved her sald. Pictures to come soon. The atmosphere, ( people seem to be happy and having a good time ). The lighting and views where nice with Lots of nice window seating. Great to see Oregons geyser. Believe it or not lol. The drinks where good and not strong. Everything was perfect so if your going to travel to some of the most gorgeous views on the eastside of Oregon then you need to have one of the best steaks on the east side. Enjoy

I don't like wasting food and all I wanted was the smashed potato for a side. The steak arrived; it was not a cut id associate with a fifty dollar entree and as it was set in front of me I clarified whether it was rare and the server confirmed it was. It was medium done for most of it and medium rare in a couple of bites. A whole side of vegetables (cooked from what I'm assuming is a frozen mix was on the plate as well, and I don't know where that came from. They were not good. That was a side that cheapened the whole dish and the steak did not deliver. I'll be trying the other steakhouse in town or just order a basic entree to not be disappointed next time.

Deeply overrated by the look of the reviews…read more First impressions count. I was overlooked by the staff as I watched other wait staff interact with guests who were sat after me. For the price points they ask for their entrees ($26-$39 and up) they need to step it up. I finally received the attention of my waiter (the room was not very busy) and he answered my questions about preparation of several main entrees. However his description of the Halibut ($36) was "coated in breadcrumbs with a dill garlic sauce." Which appealed to me so I ordered it. When the dish arrived I immediately noticed the fish was pale and bare of any breadcrumbs and had an odd pale whipped topping; not a sauce. My first bite was curious. The fish had almost no heat; as if it had been either sitting in the window or just warmed in a microwave (?). It certainly wasn't cooked and brought out to me in any thoughtful way. The curious 3-dimensional "sauce" was almost cold. The sides were passable: the generous portion of carrots were not overcooked but they were greasy, and the baked potato (also strangely greasy) was at least letting off steam. I do hate to be "that guy" but for a $36 price point I had to be honest when the young waiter asked how my dish was. I told him it was "barely warm." He seemed sincerely concerned and asked me what I wanted to do. When confronted with a similar situation (as a former waiter) I personally would have taken it into hand and had the dish replaced (and comped SOMETHING, like my $14 martini or wine or brought a comp desert: but this is more a failing of management, if the waiter even mentioned the issue to them). So I was left to direct him to have the chef "follow his ethics and decide." The dish was returned in about 5 minutes with the fish just barely reheated in a mysterious fashion (A microwave? It didn't feel like it was reheated in a pan) and the whipped "sauce" was renewed but still just tepid, and not at all a "sauce." The waiter magnanimously presented me with the fact that he gave me a new baked potato as the other was already cut up, etc. As if this was going to salvage the meal. It didn't. All just cold comfort for an expensive, slightly greasy dish. The fish was generally flavorful but somber. My mind had to do back-bends justifying the cost but ending up disappointed with the whole experience at Roosters Steal and Chops. All in all, perhaps I should've had a steak or a chop? At the end, the waiter dropped the check and hurried away, without mention or apology. Perhaps he was just not equipped to deal with the expensive but mediocre fare he has to serve.
