My husband and I ate here on 10/29/21 and had the best dinner! They serve green salad with Ranch or Honey Mustard dressing, then the Cowboy Beans and homemade rolls come out. Then they bring out the meat of choice (ours was steak) and baked potato. Our dinner was amazingly delicious! For dessert, they served a shortcake covered with strawberries and marionberries with whipped cream. Since they do not have a liquor license, your beverages to choose from is coffee, water, ice tea or pink lemonade. The staff was very friendly. Since this is about an hour South of Bend, Oregon, you will need to bring a cooler to put your leftovers in (we drove 5 hours for this dinner!) if you do not live near. After dinner, we toured the gift shop and then stayed in one of the 4 cabins they rent. Our cabin was so cute! We will definitely come back here again. read more

Cowbow Dinner Tree served me a really bad steak, the worst I've ever had. It was only the second time I've ever sent a plate back to the kitchen. My impressively thick steak was dry, tough and full of gristle. After chewing on two successive mouthfuls and not being able to swallow them, I had to spit them out. When I forked through the rest of my steak it was marbled with inedible sinew. The host was apologetic, did not charge me and offered to put another steak on the grill for me, to eat in or take home. Sadly, my appetite for another medium-rare steak had been put off by the experience and a cold, take-home steak did not appeal to me -- so I declined. I was pretty unhappy about wasting my time and money making the pilgrimage -- a six hour round trip from Medford -- to what I thought was one of Oregon's best steakhouses. Their dinner rolls, on the other hand, were fresh, soft, slightly sweet and 100% delicious. The beans a bit soupy and the green salad, although very basic, was fresh. Not sure that either of their generous sides are necessary with such a large steak to come. The restaurant is situated out in ranch country and the decor is cattleman-quaint. Service is efficient and friendly. Their steak knives could do with sharpening. Reservations required and payment is cash only. I gave them three stars for trying to make things right. I had dinner here 2 weeks ago with 3 friends and my man friend for his birthday. He lives in Sandy so it's quite a hall but we made a weekend of it and camped in Redmond. What an experience! The food was sooo good! The atmosphere was perfect, the service and staff were wonderful! We had so much food left that we cut up the leftover steak the next night and reheated it in the smoker, it was still just as good! You start with a really good, fresh salad, yummy rolls with whipped butter, then the beans (so freaking good, then your meat and a baked potato. Follow it all up with whatever dessert they serve. Out in the middle of podunk Oregon (Silver Lake).... this is a spot reminiscent of the olden days gone by. 3 hours outside of Eugene and I am told 1.5 hours outside of Bend. It is an experience so don't expect white linens etc... that is NOT this place. I gave it 5 stars because service, food, ambiance, and the experience were all worth it! DETAILS: Story is the Cowboys used to stop here to eat before heading out to the range for days. My understanding is no electricity and everything is cooked in/on a wood stove!! Beautiful drive there... Cute little gift shop to get some local made items while waiting for the doors to open -- because they don't open before 4 PM.... We were greeted, once seated, by our server -- Holly --- WHO IS AMAZING AND I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Price Fixe menu basically (cash or checks only -- no CC) -- $30 pp... Drinks are included and you can choose from unsweetened iced tea, pink lemonade, coffee, or water all served in quart mason jars! And refilled quickly too.... You pre-order dinner when you make the required reservations...Your choice is steak or chicken. Steak is a 24-30 oz Steak... Chicken is a whole chicken -- think Costco Rotisserie chicken... The dinner starts with an awesome green salad. There really isn't much to it -- lettuce, cabbage and carrots... but I'll be darned if it was so freaking YUMMY! Homemade Buttermilk Ranch or Honey Mustard (with Cumin) dressings which are both awesome. They are both delivered with your bowl of salad. This is a family style restaurant for each table. Next was fresh yeast rolls and "cowboy beans" soup... The yeast rolls are to die for -- so light and fluffy and freshly made. I think they may use unsalted butter so I may bring my own butter when we come back but other than that -- YUMMY! The cowboy bean soup has the same seasoning as the steak and chicken. They keep it consistent for your palette. I definitely think everyone should try this as it is also YUMMY!!! Then either an entire chicken or a (24-30 oz) steak with a baked potato are delivered as ordered... I swear to goodness -- this steak was one of the leanest moistest and tender steaks I have had and it is roast size -- so you know that is hard to do. The steaks are all cooked the same unless you ask for them to be more well done. The chicken is great -- but since rotisserie chickens are available for such a great deal at Costco I would always recommend the steak! The meal itself is followed by a light berry shortcake dessert. Its light and refreshing to the palette. Service was awesome from Holly -- not only was she uber pleasant but she was ON THE BALL and kept the meal rolling right along. She refilled our drinks immediately and made us feel like part of the family. We liked her so much we requested her on our next visit! Don't be afraid to ask for more salad etc if you want it... It is not often that you start running through death scenarios in your head on your way to dinner (at least not me), but you have a lot of time to think deep thoughts as you drive out into the high desert in search of a unique dining experience. The Cowboy Dinner Tree is way out there and as you are driving along the lonely highway, you see warning signs about the number of wildlife vs. car crashes. And by the way, if something does happen, there is no cell coverage (thank you AT&T). But really all of this just makes me sound like a tenderfoot. This restaurant on the outskirts of Silver Lake is roughly (don't quote me on this) an hour from Sunriver Resort south of Bend. It is essential that you call ahead and get a reservation AND directions, because believe me, you don't want to arrive and be turned away. You also need to pay close attention to the road signs, since we almost missed the turnoff. They are open year round, but only a few evenings a week and it varies seasonally. For those that decide to make the trek, here are some tips: 1) Gas up your car 2) Arrive hungry 3) Bring cash 4) Pack a cooler This family run restaurant was built at the site of the halfway point on a long trail ride where cowboys used to meet their families for dinner at the namesake tree. It is currently a ramshackle building with the grills out back and no electricity (so no credit card machine). This is not your anything-you-want chain experience. As a diner you only have two decisions to make: steak or chicken and what to drink (ice tea, lemonade or coffee). There is no boozing on the ranch. Which makes perfect sense considering the long drive home. The menu: Salad with honey mustard or ranch dressing - I wasn't too fond of the honey mustard so I suggest you do a taste test. Hearty soup - during our visit it was a bean soup Old fashioned sweet yeast rolls Entree - only two choices (now you'll understand my comment about the cooler): 26 - 30 oz. top sirloin steak - It was like being served a pot roast for your personal consumption. I suggest you ask for a side of horseradish sauce. OR 1 whole roasted chicken Baked potato Dessert - we were served a berry cobbler. The prices are very reasonable and kids six and under eat for free. Older kids (ages 7 - 13) are just $10 and are served all of the items above, except for the entree. So adults just carve off a portion of your steak or chicken for their meal. There is plenty to go around, plus lots of leftovers. We all enjoyed the experience and Mr. K got to play cowboy by showing off his roping skills with the lasso outside and my boys liked playing in the teepee. There is a small gift shop nearby with Western trinkets as well. This is a unique experience but the drive to get there was a little much. Part of what is holding me back from the fifth star is my fond memories of a restaurant we used to visit in Tumalo that closed a number of years ago. It was run by a modern version of the Osmond family and you got your chuck wagon vittles and ate while the family played Western music and sang songs from the old days on the range. And the food here, while served in mass quantities, is not the best I've ever eaten, but very good and it was one of our most interesting meals in Central Oregon. read more

With my bday toward the beginning of the month and the hubs being toward the end, it's always nice when we can do something to combine them. Several months ago we made reservations at The Cowboy Dinner Tree and last night was the night! We drove a couple hours to get there. Upon arriving at our cabin, I started videoing our surroundings when I heard a cat meowing. He came running over to our cabin and invited himself in....where he stayed until we got home from dinner. We tried to convince him to go on his way, or at least go potty, all to which he said, no thanks! While at dinner we found out his name is Bear, he never left the cabin. He slept in bed with us and this morning promptly started telling us it was breakfast time, so we gave him more chicken, lol. SHHHHHH...don't tell anyone It was sad to leave him but we are pretty sure he has an awesome life on their working ranch. While at dinner we had another guest visit us and take a nap on the chair at our table. The food and experience were amazing! You choose either beef, a 26 Oz (at least) sirloin, or a whole chicken. We had reserved one of each and they did not disappoint! They started us off with salad, then brought cowboy beans and rolls. Then the main courses, and at the end a strawberry pound cake, which we started eating before we got the pic The sky was so clear there, the stars seemed so close like we could reach out and touch them. We were going to get more pics this AM, but with it being 13 degrees we decided we just needed to get packed up and headed home. We will def go back, but when it stays lighter longer so we can walk around, look at the horses and cows and walk dinner off instead of going back to the cabin and suffering after a huge meal, lol. Second time visitor. Just as good as my first visit. The service was excellent as the meal. Plenty of leftovers! My only concern was that the table opposite had a fairly large group that repeatably went outside and brought in beer to their table even though it is clearly posted that outside liquor is not allowed. Going to the cowboy dinner tree is a wonderful experience. It is out of the way and I do mean out of the way. It is some miles down a secondary back road out of a small town in southern Oregon. They only have two items on the menu, a whole chicken or a gigantic steak. They do not allow you to share a dinner how do you must place your order when making a reservation. The dinners both come with homemade rolls and other side dishes along with dessert. They do not serve alcohol but give you a lemonade or a coffee maybe a soft drink I don't remember. There is a picnic table under a tree out front where are you can bring your own beer or wine or whatever and have a cocktail before or after dinner. But you can not take it into the restaurant. If you don't want to have a long drive home after dinner they have a few cabins there which you can reserve in advance. The last time I did that the dinner was included with the cost of the cabin. They are very rustic cabins so don't expect a high and hotel room. I am looking forward to returning again and again. Plan on taking a lot of food home. read more

What an adventure! We made the drive from Bend (1.5 hrs) A long gravel road reveals an old Cowboy house. As cute as can be. We waited with others for our earl reservation (must have) in the little gift shop. The salad, steak (it's bigger than you imagine!) and potato were tue highlight. The beans and dessert are okay. Its a super fun place in that they make 2 things, and they make them well. We found it hard to believe they could make such a big steak and it would be tender but wooo they killed it! This was quite an experience! Salad incredibly fresh, loved the buttermilk ranch dressing. Dinner rolls - soft and served warm. Soup - ours was bean and it was great according to people at my table who liked beans. Chicken - I wouldn't waste your time, just get the steak. Steak - huge and delicious. It was seasoned nicely, very tender and cooked they way we like it -- medium rare (if you like your meat really well done, I would let them know when you order). There were 5 of us .. and we didn't make it through 1 whole steak....that's how big they are. I think it might be doable if you're a lineman... but otherwise plan to take the leftovers (lots of leftovers) home... Dessert - we were pretty full but couldn't turn down strawberry shortcake! The restaurant may be a bit tight for people who are big enough to get through the steak (I think the ceilings are a little over 6') but that adds to the environment! Stayed and ate here on a motorcycle trip. The cabins are sooo adorable and rustic. The food is amazing and obviously huge! It's a once in a lifetime experience to come stay here off the beaten path and treat yourself to a giant helping of steak or chicken that will make the cabin you are staying in perfect food coma accommodations for the night. Bring mosquito repellent if you are sitting outside your cabin for any length of time. The cabins have little fridges, coffee pots, fireplaces, standup showers, toilet, comfortable beds, rustic decorations and little porches with tables and chairs. Some friendly kitties came and greeted us outside our cabins. We brought our own wine and enjoyed it at our cabin's outside table as the restaurant doesn't serve alcohol, but offers you pink lemonade or ice tea in giant mason jars. The sign to turn off and go the five miles up to it is old and the paint is worn, so if you get to the little general store going south you missed the turn just a road back. People are friendly and they book pretty far in advance for food and cabins. Everything is cash only and they have a little gift shop to enjoy too along with fun cowboy decor outside and in. While you wait play horseshoes or just enjoy the high dessert views. read more

This was the one of most fantastic dining experience I have had in all my travels. (I am a "Full-Time RV'er and travel extensively) First, the meal was first rate, much more than expected from a small town diner. The staff were friendly and attentive without being intrusive, took the time to make the experience seem personal, even though they were busy. Then comes the soup and / or beans with fresh rolls. All served family style. Have as many helpings as your quickly expanding tummy can handle. We all thought the beans were worth a second ladle and regretted that decision once the main course arrived. Because just when you think this was all a meal in itself, your server is beckoning, "We got two chickens & five steaks here...now who's got what?" As pictures can attest: the steak is actually a small roast and the chicken is a whole roasted chicken...and let's not forget the baked tater! I challenge anyone to finish this meal. I wonder if its ever been done? To top it all off, after To Go bags have been filled with enough meat for the next three days...dessert awaits. None of us thought we could eat another bite, but alas it was so light, refreshing and yummy that not a one of our seven didn't polish it off and practically lick the plate clean. Yes, it was THAT good. Value: Unanimous---worth every penny and more! There is no possible way anyone could leave hungry. Combined with the leftovers for the next several days, how could you not feel the $27 was a great deal? Rarely have any of us felt like you really paid for what you got at $27 a plate. I think my eyes popped out of my head when they brought me my 28 ounce steak, yep you read that right 28 ounces, okay give or take 2 ounces. It tasted real good too! The little bit I did eat, well it didn't even make a dent in it. Also, got a salad, huge plate of homemade rolls, big bowl of beans, baked potato, dessert, and steak. I think I wobbled home, I was so full I can't remember. Our server was Amy, she was sweet, she accidentally dumped my huge class of ice tea in my husbands lap, she felt bad but hey accidents happen. We all, in the barn so to speak, had a good laugh about it all evening. We also stayed at one of their cabins, made you feel like you were camping. Awesome night for star gazing. We even had an extremely friendly cat that hung out with us, basically didn't want to leave our side. I gave this place a 4 star because the bed was not comfortable at all, hot water ran out to quickly, and I couldn't lock our cabin, yes I'm funny about that stuff.
