If you find yourself driftin' through Roswell, folks'll point you straight toward Cowboy Cafe like it's gospel and truth be told, it's earned that reputation. Now I'll say this... I rode in half expectin' a little more alien flair maybe a green fella slingin' hash behind the counter but that ain't the hand they deal. What you do get is a clean joint, friendly service, and a plate that shows up honest and hot. That patty melt? Solid. Crispy, greasy in the right way, and worth the stop. Breakfast holds its own too eggs done right, no nonsense, just good fuel for the road. And for the record, the whole UFO business traces back to the Roswell Incident, which actually went down a ways outside of town but Roswell's been carryin' that legend ever since. End of the day, Cowboy Cafe ain't about gimmicks it's about doin' simple food right. Clean place, good service, strong local backing. I've visited Roswell a few times and everybody told me I had to try Cowboy Café. First two visits, the line was way too long so I didn't wait (about a 60 min wait to be seated). On my most recent trip we finally got to go and give it a try. I was pleasantly pleased. The food might be a little overrated, but that's what happens when a place is good -- people hype it up and the bar gets set so high it's hard to hit. Nothing negative to say about the food though, and the servers were wonderful. I had the cheeseburger with fire roasted green chilies and it was really good. Onion rings were definitely homemade and delicious. The restaurant was clean, had a great atmosphere, and a lot of flair to look at while you're there. All in all, I can see why people like this place. read more

The Cowboy Cafe is located a little ways from the main part of Roswell, but still not too far. It is unique in its astetics. The bar stools have seat cushions that look like part of a saddle. There is a mini stagecoach in front as well. The inside tables are booths. There is plenty of gravel parking with a paved handicap space.  The bathroom is gender neutral with unique memorabilia. The service was fast. The server stopped several times during our meal to check on our wants... outstanding! The menu is decent. The prices are reasonable. I ordered hamburger steak with onions. It came with a small house salad, mashed potatoes, corn, and cornbread. The meal was delicious. They also have cake and pie as well. So, if you come to Roswell to see the aliens, be sure to stop by the Comboy Cafe. You just might enjoy yourself. read more

I had stage 67 cancer for a year before eating here. The second I walked in and smelt that beautiful smell of cancer freeing chimichangas, I felt the 2 ton cancerous tumor lift off of my gluteus maximus. Everyone was so nice. The food isn't just good - we had the best lunch in over 2000 miles and 10 days of traveling and eating out. From Estes Park Colorado to Roswell NM- hands up THIS IS THE PLACE. Big breakfasts and good family Style cooking. We had the Hamburger Steak and Onion. And the Chicken Fried Chicken. Both came with mashed potatoes, vegetable of the day, green chili cornbread and side salad. Good stuff! They close at 2 and we arrived at 1. Every bite we were saying how perfect it was after all the foo-foo food we had been eating. We NEEDED this meal to make it back to Texas and home. Last time I passed through Roswell I made sure to eat at the cowboy Cafe. Today, I could not be more disappointed. Waitress behind the bar had us wait for her to clean off a table, no problem, but the table nor benches were clean. A different waitress brought us our drinks. Again no issue, but the glasses were dirty and there was obvious debris in the bottom of both cups. I'd suggest cleaning the ice dispenser as thats probably where it came from. It took another ten minutes to be able to get new cups as we were passed by easily a dozen times before our original waitress stopped over. After being told "thats just the design on the cup" we got up and left. We watched the waitresses take very good care of everyone that looked local so we know they are capable of providing good service, but I guess my wife and I are just tourists read more

This is a cute dive off the main road in Roswell. It's old west decor is fun and unique. The dining room is small and people are willing to wait to eat here. The servers are friendly and attentive. I had the eggs and French toast. The French toast was great made with cinnamon bread. The syrup was hot and delicious! My hubby had the biscuits and gravy. The biscuits were very good and the sausage tasted homemade. Very good! My son had the t bone breakfast with grits. He devoured it. Very flavorful. We also bought some of the Black Betty BBQ sauce. We picked this place based on the reviews, but it left us wishing we had opted for a chain (and we rarely do those). We sat at the counter, which on a chilly day was a cold spot. We ordered chicken fried steak and hamburger steak, both of which came with mashed potatoes and vegetable of the day (green beans) and a salad. Five minutes after we ordered we were told that they were out of salad (although we saw a taco salad go out so not sure what was up with that). They offered an additional side, which my husband got potatoes, and I opted for more green beans. The food came out fairly quickly. My husband's chicken fried steak was breaded unlike any we have ever seen. It was almost like it was fried in a pan and the breading was just flour. The flavor, even with the gravy, wasn't good. My "hamburger steak" was actually just two VERY cooked, thin hamburger patties, three small pieces of onion and drowned in gravy (thank goodness because it helped the dry hamburger patties go down). I have never had hamburger steak that was simply a frozen patty, and I wouldn't have ordered it if the description had indicated that was what they considered hamburger steak. Now to the sides. The green beans tasted like they had been boiled in apple juice or something sweet. The staff said they were fresh (although they didn't look like it) and that was probably why they seemed sweet. We don't eat canned veggies at home, and our fresh green beans have never had that flavor. The mashed potatoes seemed to be homemade, as they were lumpy, but the flavor wasn't great. The staff was friendly, and the homemade cakes looked good, but we were already too disappointed in what we had gotten that we weren't going to risk another $8 to try any. I mentioned our experience to the hotel staff in casual conversation, and they said that most people have told them that breakfast was good, but the lunch items left a lot to be desired. Y'ALL!!! This place is such a fun little dive. In a town that has more breakfast places than you can shake a stick at; it is nice to have some direction. I can tell you, you must try Cowboy Cafe. I love the ambience with the old diner feel. Locals eat here also, which is a very good sign. I enjoyed the old west art throughout and the coffee cups were cute and were offered for sale at the counter along with some of the most beautiful cakes and pies, Cowboy Cafe green and red chile sauces which they call Roswell Sauce and Revolver Sauce, hot sauces and seasonings. I order the Wash Tub Burrito and it was huge! I cut in half to eat half immediately and perhaps some later. The burrito did have everything but the kitchen sink in it such as bacon, sausage, eggs, peppers, hashbrowns, etc. I ordered the Roswell Sauce (green chile) for the top and it was also topped with cheese. The flavors within were so well combined that you didn't get any overwhelming flavors from any particular ingredient. My husband had the Buckaroo breakfast and his bacon was so good he had to share it with me. So crispy and delicious! My family and I were visiting Roswell for the first time and wanted to try a local eatery. We walked in and were greeted by a hostess. Briefly after, a man walked in, and she went to seat him immediately He told her we were there first, which she already knew. She acted surprised by this, but then proceeded to seat us. We asked to be where the stroller would be out of the way, and we told that there was no place to be out of the way here. We placed our order, but my daughter's and my order were wrong. They were sent back to the kitchen where mine was made incorrectly again, but at this point I just wanted to eat. Another member of my family ordered the patty melt and only one side was toasted. The sign outside the building said homemade pie, so we ordered a slice of the peach and the blueberry. These pies were not homemade. Overall a very disappointing experience. read more

Especially for the price you are charging for the chicken fry. Corn bread was dry and flavorless. Corn was straight out of a can and had no butter, flavorless. I ordered a chicken fried chicken and got a chicken fried steak. No big deal, but they were not busy yet and have a very small menu. How do you mix that up? $43 for two chicken fried steaks, two waters and two coffees. Outrageous. Staff did not even greet us or tell us bye when we left. First time in New Mexico husband and I were expecting a really delicious breakfast but was found with a disappointing result. My husband got a burrito that had all the meats and eggs it was okay nothing special about it the green chile sauce was the biggest disappointment. Being Latina I have standards for any salsa and this was more of a gravy that had way too much gelatin characteristics on it than a salsa texture. Before going to the UFO museum in Roswell we stopped in to the Cowboy Cafe for some breakfast. First off the place is somewhat small so we were lucky to get a table. We ordered the Western Omelet & the Alien Omelet ( Ham, cheese, green chili & topped with a sunny side egg ) Both were excellent with nice, large portions. We also loved the Cowboy theme of the restaurant. The only possible downside of this restaurant might be the prices are just a bit on the high side but the great food & great service is well worth it. So whether you're heading to the UFO museum or Bitter lakes National wildlife refuge make it a point to stop in to the Cowboy Cafe first, you won't be disappointed. read more

It was very filling and the hashbrowns were very crispy. The gravy was very, very bland. There were two glass cake stands by the register and one appeared to be carrot cake. When I asked the waitress what it was, she stated it was italian cream cake. I decided to give it a try and after two bites, I pushed my plate away. It was crumbly and dry. It was obvious I didn't like it, but she still decided to charge me $7 though. If we head through Roswell again, we'll skip this place. The food wasn't good enough to warrant the prices and credit card fees they charge. $29.04 (no tip included) was our total that included the Chicken biscuit and Taters, one coffee and a slice of cake + credit card fee.
