This place was awesome. I went back twice. The owner Tracy was super welcoming, and I just liked saying I got a pizza at Cow Dog. I told all my friends I went to Cow Dog. I thought it was way funnier than they did for some reason. I was there for pizza night and it was one of the better pizzas I've had in a while. I got a pepperoni pizza and it was just fancy enough to be fancy without being so fancy that I wouldn't eat it. There's also a food truck - it's both a little restaurant and a food truck - I didn't try the food truck, but I will next time! Then I came back in the morning and had a bacon egg biscuit. That was also excellent. There was music outside and everyone was happy and there's a funky little hang out room to the side with seating and art. It's a food truck with hot dogs, which sounds simple. However, there is a small building next to the truck, so if it's cold, there actually is a place to sit indoors. They substituted an Impossible Hot Dog, and it was grilled perfectly. The grilled bun and dog were topped w green chili, cheddar and pepper jack cheeses, a spicy sauce, and fritos. Such a delicious combo, my mouth couldn't believe it. The staff was friendly and service was pretty quick, considering the long line of customers. Cow Dog is a food trailer, and hours are "flexible." Drove hours out of our way to go here, so that tells you the hotdogs are good..... But service not at all.,... As we were walking up they were putting up the closed sign.... (I believe they saw us briskly coming their way)......The cook was still by grill inside truck. People were still eating on the patio. I mean it had to be seconds! I said, " Aw man, we drove hours to come here." My comment was bullets off Superman. He didn't act like he cared one bit!..... He said, "Yep, we're closed." Cow dog is awesome! It was a popping spot with a few outdoor picnic tables to sit at. There was a bit of a wait for the food, but it was worth it. While we waited, we popped into the adjoining coffee shop and when we came out, we were able to snag a cute table looking out towards the street. We came here because of their vegetarian option. It's actually a fritter, and doesn't necessarily have a hot dog shape, cause it's flat, but it is long. We got the Vegomatic and it's the fritter fitted into a hot dog bun and comes with all the normal toppings! It's eaten just like a hot dog and we loved it. They also had all the ingredients of the fritter written on the truck, which is extra nice for us vegetarians, and rarely seen. The dogs come in two sizes - little and big. We each ordered a big. We also ordered a tater dish dish that was topped with a fried egg and ranchero sauce. It was a lot of food for the both of us, we probably could have ordered two littles or split the big with the tots, but it was all delicious and we gobbled it up. Over 20 years ago I had a delay at OHare. Left the airport and hailed a cab and told the guy I wanted a good roast beef sandwich. "You ever have a dog in Chicago?" I said no. He took me to a friend of his that ran a cart and insisted I get the dog with "the works." I cannot tell you thru this review how that experience was, but I can portray it close to something on a biblical level like the first memory of your grandmother's red velvet cake. Enter Cowdog. I was on/off the fence with the chili frito pie dog but a different menu item I saw caught my attention: the Chicago dog. I thought nah--no way, stop chasing the feeling of something that happened over 20 years ago. I submitted against my initial judgement and placed an order for a Chicago dog. The wait was about 10-15min (little busy at lunch, expected) and I took the dog back to my truck to eat on the way, as I had a 6 hour drive ahead of me. Balancing the wheel and the dog was a challenge but after the first bite, I had to pull over. My wife asks what's wrong as I appear to be in shock, which I was after being immediately transported 20 years into the past on a cold Chicago intersection clutching love at first sight. I couldn't believe it, this dog replicated that feeling of DAMN. Go against what you're craving and take a chance on Cowdog's Chicago item. Can't beat it. read more

Was in Alpine last week and stopped by right before 2pm - there were quite a few people in line and in the seating area enjoying their food. Ordered the El Pastor (minus the pesto), BBQ Pulled Pork and a Green Chili Flop. The Green Chili Flop was a tasty and different side dish that I highly recommend. My friend and I caught this place on the way through Alpine back from Big Bend. I have a passion for food trailers so we had to stop! We scoped the place out a bit and got in line and noticed it was cash only... that kind of sucked but no big deal we found an ATM and got some change. There was a still a huge line when we got back from the ATM but we waited. I went a bit heavy on the order because I wanted to try so much and ordered 3 large dogs and an order of green chili hash brown patties of some sort. We got the Thai Style Dog, The Hangover and The Moofeleta. We ate the Thai Style Dog first and let me say it was amazing. The peanuts and slaw everything worked so well together. The Hebrew National hotdog was also a plus. Next up the Hangover .. think Frito Pie on top of a chili dog.. it was everything you would expect it to be. Chili Cheese Fritos.. and bam! I'll probably try and eat all of my future Chili Cheese Dogs this way! We took the Moofeleta on the road and enjoyed it a few hours later on the way back to Austin. I have to say it was my clear favorite and absolutely delicious like no other hot dog I've ever had. If I lived anywhere near Alpine I would eat these on a pretty regular basis. The hash brown type side dish we had with green chili's and cheese was also very good. Nothing as special as the hot dogs but I did like it. If you find yourself in Alpine eating here is a must. We were in Alpine as part of a road trip to Big Bend. My boyfriend and I are pescatarian and we anticipated not being able to eat much in Alpine. We were pleasantly surprised to find that Cowdog had a veggie dog option. Be aware that it is not an actual veggie dog but a veggie patty. It was pretty good. I do think that with the yummy toppings that they serve an actual veggie dog would taste well. The customer service was great and I loved the hometown feel. If you haven't stopped to check out the '66 Winnebago with horns on the front of it parked in front of Tumbleweed and Plaine coffee shop, you are missing out. Alan Vannoy and his wife Kelly are the owners and operators of the Cow Dog food truck. Alan has always loved food, but didn't take his self-taught creative foodiness public until February 2010, when they followed Alan's passion and opened their food truck. Kelly works the window and Alan works the grill, creating mouth-watering deliciousness that set me on a mission to complete the entire menu and try one of everything. Hot dogs are 100% all beef and come in two sizes - small and large. Alan makes his own sauces, pestos and chutneys. My first visit, I ordered the small (a regular-sized dog), but that changed the next time around, and now it's large for me (about the size of a foot-long). A few visits into my eating-quest, I got stuck on the El Pastor. My husband discovered the El Pastor before me, and that's all that he orders. A grilled hot dog with cilantro pesto, lime mayo and grilled pineapple... OHMYGAWD. On laundry days, Alan and Kelly package a large El Pastor for my husband with the sauces and toppings in containers so it doesn't get mushy on the drive back to Fort Davis. My mouth is watering just thinking about the El Pastor. I also love the German dog with kraut, bacon, mustard and caraway seeds. Traveling with my wife, a PhD candidate, I have found that while there are some great options for finding tree litter. However, when it comes to food, West Texas is not so good. If you are a big fan of King of the Hill, you know that your options are Mexican or barbecue. Sadly, West Texas is filled with average places, at best. So, while spending the night in Alpine, we did our research, and we had heard that the Cow Dog was one of the best places in Alpine. My only gripe with Cow Dog was that it was hard to find. Other than that, the Curry Dog was an awesome dish, chased by the cold beer I had next door at a nearby watering hole.
