This is a tourist souvenir shop. It's not a fancy designer art gallery with carefully curated items that will excite and delight. It's a trinket store with items bulk bought from China. Now, there's nothing wrong with that (well, actually the global use of disposable plastic items is a problem, but not one for Yelp, I think) but keep your expectations on this fact. The store itself is pretty large, with many an item being sold. I'm sure there are some things in here that are made in NM but a majority of the items are trinkets. I collect magnets of places I've been so I always come in to these kinds of stores to find the best ones. We haven't been to Old Town Albuquerque in quite some time. So we are going from ship to shop enjoying the wares of each one. We stopped here for a look. A great selection of pottery, ceramics, souvenirs, clothing, Pendleton blankets and boots. I found a denim jacket I liked but didn't have my size on display. The salesperson offered to check the back room stock and searched high and low omly to find everything but the size I needed. Oh well. Customer service at its best. We walked out without anything but only because we couldn't find the size. Worth a stop here for reasonably priced goodies. read more

I Purchased five pairs of moccasins and one pair of men's sandals in September 2021. The sandals literally fell apart after wearing for three days, and I contacted Covered Wagon for a refund and they refused. I sent photos and offered to return them at my expense but they still refused. I have purchased over $500 worth of moccasins in the last two years at the store, so I thought they would've respected me as a good customer. This is my go-to place for moccasins. I buy a pair each time that I'm there. This time I went for two pair but they ran out so I only got one pair. Rats! Maybe next time. I was looking for moccasins and i believe they house what used to be called The Mocassin Shop. They had an awesome selection of Mocs in every color and size. I found what i was looking for- leather bottom mocs-at reasonable price. They have a lot of hats and t-shirts, some t-shirts are on sale gor $5.99 plus there are some unusual local ones. Then they have the array of keepsakes like tiles and stickers and dishes and Pendleton blankets and towels. The place goes on and on, one room to another around corners and through hallways. A journey to Albuquerque circa 1957, as recounted by Timmy, age eight: Boy, mom and pop sure got excited about our trip to New Mexico. They were tellin' me about how the place was still the Wild West, how some places never change and how in New Mexico, cowboys still git them Indians and how if ya ain't careful and stay in the city, them savages'll scalp ya. I gotta tell ya, I was real worried about what might happen when we got there, but I didn't want nobody to know so I kept my mouth shut. Pop always says real men don't get scared. When we made it to Albuquerque, the first place we went was to this place called Old Town. We was walkin' around what they call the Plaza and I saw all kinds of Injuns there, selling jewelry and stuff, and I got pretty scared because I didn't want to get scalped, but my pop said I didn't have to worry, that they were domesticated, not rabid and wild like the ones in the mountains. Then we walked into this store called the Covered Wagon. That was the best part of our whole trip. Everything I ever wanted was in that store! Rifles, sheriff's badges, handcuffs, cowboy boots, and all kinds of stuff that I could put on to pretend I'm huntin' a real Injun! Or I could be one myself: moccasins, bows & arrows, war paint, even some of them colored feather crowns that them chiefs wear right before they go on the war path. Lots of Mexican stuff there, too. This is one of the larger stores in Albuquerque's touristy Old Town, but it's a good place to get souvenirs for friends and family. They have all the touristy things you can think of--magnets, bead jewelry, trinkets, carvings, leather goods, Navajo pottery, t-shirts, etc. We walked out with a jar of Albuquerque-made red chili sauce ($6), a t-shirt and two Navajo-made pottery bowls from the adjacent store ($33 each). Later, in a shop in a less touristy area of town, I found similar bowls for around the $26 so their prices are probably a little higher due to the convenient location. Note: Dog friendly. read more

Great place to go for inexpensive New Mexican souvenirs. Lots of little trinkets to mail the out-of-town family and friends.

Yesterday my husband and I visited the Covered Wagon at Old Town and had a lot of fun going through all the gifts, on both the small inexpensive touristy side of the store and the more expensive side with so much beautiful jewelry and hand made objects. I bought a lovely inlaid pendant and a matching pair of earrings made by Zuni artist Alex Boone. These items were for a friend in Ireland and were a lovely set that I am proud to send as an example of native craftsmanship. I owned an Indian Arts gallery for years and can say with some authority that the native pieces I saw in the store were authentic and well made. I also bought a small laser cut pin/brooch with the three Kokopelli dancing. It is small and delicate and I paid $8.99 for it. It is not Indian made, but lovely nonetheless. This store has a great selection of items from very inexpensive to ... well some lovely and extraordinary pieces. Any review that dismisses this store is making a mistake and doesn't know what they are looking at. I worked here for 7 or 8 months and it was the worst job I've ever had. Knowing from personal experience, everything is priced up waaaaay too high, most of them are 3 times what the owner bought them for. The personal drama between coworkers is outrageous, and George the owner is much a cheap skate and very mean. 85% of the products are made in China. Refunds are non existent. The whole store is VERY dirty. All the policies and added on prices of shipping etc. are very high. read more
