Ship's Knees Inn - Pancakes! Innkeeper Denise always has a delicious selection of breakfast treats

Ship's Knees Inn

There are some places that simply feel like coming home, and Ship's Knees Inn is one of them…read more My husband Dave and I spent our honeymoon week here 48 years ago, and we've returned every 5 to 10 years ever since. Each visit reminds us why this beautiful bed and breakfast remains one of our favorite places on Cape Cod. Pete and Denise Butcher are exceptional innkeepers. Warm-hearted, welcoming, and genuinely caring, they treat every guest like family. They know your name, take the time to get to know you, and are always happy to recommend the best restaurants, beaches, golf courses, bike trails, hikes, sunset spots, Cape Cod League baseball games, boat trips, and hidden gems throughout the Cape. The inn itself is charming and impeccably maintained. The rooms are beautifully decorated, comfortable, and relaxing. On our most recent visit, we stayed in the lovely Nauset Suite and immediately felt at home. The grounds are beautifully landscaped, the pool is pristine, and there are inviting patio areas perfect for reading, relaxing, or chatting with fellow guests. One of the highlights of every stay is Denise's wonderful breakfast buffet. Her homemade specialties, including overnight oats and Swedish almond coffee cake, are memorable treats that start the day perfectly. Evenings are equally special. Guests gather around the large fire pit from 7 to 10 p.m., sharing stories, making new friends, and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. Over the years we've met many wonderful people there, including friends who continue to return year after year. The location couldn't be better. Spectacular Nauset Beach is just a short quarter-mile walk away, offering endless stretches of sand, rolling ocean waves, fresh sea air, beautiful shells, and opportunities to spot whales and other marine life Some of our happiest memories are the evenings spent around the fire pit. Guests gather from near and far, and before long everyone is chatting as if they've known each other for years. We've exchanged travel stories, shared laughs, learned about different parts of the country, and picked up wonderful recommendations. What always amazes us is how quickly we discover a common bond. Whether someone is visiting for the first time or returning for the tenth, we all share an appreciation for the warmth, hospitality, and sense of community that Pete and Denise have created at Ship's Knees Inn. Those fire pit conversations often become as memorable as the days spent exploring Cape Cod. It's easy to see why Ship's Knees Inn earned recognition from Cape Cod LIFE Magazine's Best of Cape Cod Awards, receiving Silver Winner honors in the Bed & Breakfast/Inn category in both 2025 . It is a relaxing, rejuvenating, and peaceful retreat where hospitality is genuine and every guest feels valued. We can't wait for our next visit.

We've found the rooms to be clean, comfortable and well appointed. The grounds are beautiful and well cared for, and there is a nice pool area as well. The Inn itself is located just a short walk from Nauset Beach, which is super convenient. The town of Orleans has nice shopping and plenty of dining options as well. Denise puts together a wonderful breakfast each morning with a rotation of delicious baked goods and other treats. On this last visit I happened to mention that I love pancakes, and there they were the next morning! Again, if we ever have a special request, Denise & Peter will do everything to make it happen. We are so happy that our friends found this Inn years ago, and invited us to join them, and we've been returning ever since. If you are looking for a nice place for your Cape vacation, look no further.

Patio looks out on lush garden with summer flowers. Very clean, tastefully-decorated rooms. Easy parking. Nice residential area. Breakfasts are ample, delicious and varied. Fresh fruit salad daily with variations of granola, yogurt, egg, crab dishes and fruit pancakes, muffins, fruit juice, coffee and tea. Attractive presentation. Wonderful hosts--a couple who know the area well and can advise regarding beaches, local restaurants, and other attractions. Good conversation--only when we sought it. Only down-side for me: spotty T-Mobile reception, but that was a problem in that part of the Cape. They do have wifi and Internet.

They know everything about the Cape and are a wealth of knowledge on what to do, where to eat, and what to see when on the Cape. The breakfasts they prepare are gourmet and absolutely delicious. This was my 9th summer staying at the Wildflower B & B and I can't wait to go back in the Fall! I absolutely LOVE this place. I highly recommend it!!

The inn strikes the perfect balance between historic New England charm and modern comfort, and everything was impeccably clean and thoughtfully maintained. The breakfasts each morning are outstanding. They are beautifully prepared, delicious, and something we looked forward to every day. The location couldn't have been better. Tucked away in the East End, it was peaceful and quiet while still being an easy walk or bike ride to everything Provincetown has to offer. After a day exploring beaches, galleries, and shops on Commercial Street, it was wonderful to come back to such a relaxing place. What really sets this inn apart, though, is the hospitality. You can tell Spencer takes tremendous pride in creating an experience rather than simply providing a place to stay. That personal touch is what makes all the difference. This is easily the best bed-and-breakfast experiences we've ever had. We've met wonderful people during our stays and are so look forward to coming back! It feels like a little family reunion.

I found them extremely accommodating and easy to talk to. From the moment we checked in, at breakfast, throughout the day and when we checked out, every interaction was calm, caring, engaging and thoughtful. I found a great deal for the Penny House on Living Social and was so glad that I purchased it and went to visit. Upon entering, the atmosphere was clean, stylish and very comfortable. I was extremely impressed (except that the artwork in the living room was not my taste at all- but that's a personal thing) Otherwise, the layout was large and felt really spacious, there were lots of windows letting in plenty of natural light. Because we were there during the off-peak season we had a choice of rooms and chose to stay in the Captains Quarters which was UNREAL!!! Talking to the new owners, I know they are planning on updating all the rooms but as it was, we were extremely happy. We completely fell in love with this room. Full of old world charm, dark wood panelling, dark rustic wood beams, 4 post king sized bed! The room had comfortable chairs, fireplace, separate bathroom and the most unbelievable spa tub I have ever soaked in. We made sure to use the tub every night we were there, especially after our day of hiking around Provincetown on the beach and in the dunes. So good for sore muscles. The breakfasts were great! We were served homemade granola, yogurt, eggs, bacon and either waffle or pumpkin pancakes and everything was so tasty. There were also cookies and scones complimentary and you could help yourself to tea or coffee throughout the day. I felt so at home here, I didn't want to leave. The last day that I was there, I treated myself to 90 min massage in their amazingly beautiful spa. I had a great treatment and I am extremely picky. (this is coming from a fellow Licensed Massage Therapist) Janet really did a great job working specific points and areas of my body to release tension while giving a fantastic overall relaxation treatment. The spa itself is beautiful, the owner told me it's the first thing they renovated when the purchased the Penny House in June. It's tastefully decorated in a modern yet calming style, the colors and decor are warm and soothing, with another beautiful jet tub, two massage tables, a fire place and great amenities. I'm already trying to plan my next visit to Penny House Inn & Spa- I can't wait to go back and relax, hopefully for more than just two nights next time.

These have become condos, so each owner puts a different level of care into their property and prices are set according to their sense of value - so more $$ isn't necessarily a better cottage. The property manager is attentive and friendly. The ocean is right there. But it is a steep walk down the dunes. It's also a public beach. I always visit on the off season and have found the beach to be nearly deserted, even in mid June. It is especially lovely in the early morning. It's about a 3/4 mile bike ride to the cape cod rail trail, on the paved road which has little shoulder but in the off season anyway the drivers are safe and respectful. The road riding around the ponds is excellent -rolling hills, quiet roads. It's also only about a 10 minute walk to the Marconi site and cedar trail boardwalk. Go down lacount hollow towards rte 6 and turn down the sand road called "wireless". The ponds of wellfleet are a delight- clear and clean and again nearly deserted in mid June. The water is chilly though! I've always stayed in the cabin called surf side. It is well furnished and comfortable. Lots of storage, nice kitchen even a dishwasher! The stairs to the two upstairs bedrooms are VERY steep and precarious. My 70 old mother can just do them. The bathroom is modern and clean, shower only - with a skylight in it! The bath is right off the kitchen which can be a bit awkward-the owners have provided air freshener! On that topic - these owners provide much more than you would expect - Tupperware, bags and wraps, dish soap, all manner of dishes and cooking gear. The group of condos also has a laundry facility - $2.00 to wash and the same to dry. You need quarters. The town of wellfleet has ample dining options. The harbor beaches are nice for long walks and sea shell collection. Bugs are dismal everywhere in wellfleet, especially at surfside. Bring your preferred bug prevention and keep the screen door closed.
