Moving to a new city is HARD to throw your hair into just anyone's hands! I did a little research to find who I could try in Teddington and came across this lovely place! Wayne the owner is not only non-pretentious (and could be with a long list of hair accolades coming from New Zealand) but very approachable and easy to discuss hair options with. He also knows how to cut curly hair which for me is a HUGE bonus. The other staff are also super nice and from what I was seeing, making people look good! I will definitely be back in my 6-12 week time for a haircut and try a color as my faith in hair styling has been restored.

I also have a bit of a phobia about having my hair cut, as I've had quite a few really dire hair cuts. I also find it difficult to justify the exorbitant prices top salons charge. I worry that a hair dresser (or stylist) will judge a cut by how much hair is on the floor, rather than what's left on my head. However, when a friend suggested Billy Basin, I thought I'd give it a try, despite the costs. This Hampton Hill High Street salon is an upper end (for non-London, non-celebrity place) establishment. You won't get a cheap and cheerful cut here - you become fully aware of this when you walk in and see the opulent reception desk, the expensive hair product, and the complete lack of cheesy 'hair style' posters on the walls. All the staff are dressed in black (including the Saturday girls), and all, as you might expect, have fashionable hair cuts. Once you're in, you'll be asked what you're hoping to have done (you will have specified what procedures - i.e. colour - you are wanting when you made the appointment) and what you'd like to drink - anything from coffee to wine to Diet Coke (my usual option). You'll then be taken to have your hair washed and your head massaged. The head massage is one of the highlights of the experience. I either have a wash, cut and blow dry, or half a head of highlights and then the wash, cut and blow dry - I have my hair coloured about twice a year. I get the same person (Renate) to do it each time, and she has a note of the colours I like (different shades of golden blonde - just a bit lighter than my dishwater blonde natural colour) on the computers. I now trust her completely. She has a good knowledge of which products won't weigh my hair down, and how much 'styling' I like having done. She is also friendly without being nosy. Renate is not the most expensive stylist there - like many top salons, having your hair done by the owners and partners will cost you more. However, I pay around £35 for the wash, cut and blow dry alone, and over £100 for the colour as well. This is not a cheap option (which explains why I have my hair cut and coloured so seldom). However, it is a real treat, and I do walk out feeling a million dollars (and a few pounds lighter)

Because my hair resembles a lions mane, it needs near constant supervision and I put my trust in them completely. As well as all the standard cuts, colours and tints, this salon stand out for me because of the range of organic hair colours that they also offer for tints and highlights. Namely Aveda and Organics. If you are like me, and have spent years stripping your hair of colour only to have it artificially re-applied again, then I would suggest Organics, which has no ammonia or parabens, and doesn't damage the hair structure. The Maze also do 15 minute treatments with these products which end with a head-tingling massage, and are only £10. One of the stylists has also qualified to cut wigs. The principle of this is called My New Hair, a Trevor Sorbie cause which teaches stylists how to cut wigs for cancer patients who have suffered the side-effects of chemotherapy and experienced hair loss. I turned to my helpful friend Yelp for some assistance in finding a place in Richmond I could get a cut in between shopping breaks and came across A&N which had some great reviews. I've worked past this salon a few times while in Richmond but never noticed it. When I read the reviews on Yelp, I thought to give it a try. I was looking for a cut and dry but they could only do a cut at the time I wanted. Hesitant of two things, the fact that it was freezing outside and I didn't want to be cold and also the fact that I've never tried this salon before, I had to think about it. As I continued to read the reviews, I decided to take the plunge and book for 2:30pm. I called around 12pm for an appointment. As I walked in, I noticed how nearly organised and clean it was and that's important to me. The salon is a small shop with two male and two female hairdressers from what I saw. The staff were nice and took my coat and scarf when I walked in. Within 30 minutes or less, I got a wash and new haircut. My only issue is the fact that I felt as though the lady (dark hair, can't remember her name) was judging me because of my split ends and didn't really pay attention to what I was saying. Nevertheless, I got a nice cut so she must have some multi tasking ability with a "let's get it done quickly" personality. My haircut was £28 and because I checked into the salon through yelp, I get a men's cut for £12 instead of £16. That would be of some use to someone.
