My stylist is Sara and she is absolutely fantastic. Very attentive as well as easy to chat with so it makes coming in very enjoyable. She's basically the only person I will let touch my hair now. Recently she did some color for me - my first time ever going lighter so I was quite terrified. I don't know anyone in London to give me a recommendation so I researched salons looking for one that uses the Davines Product line because that was the last color used on my hair and I had the dye numbers. I also needed a salon I could reach using public transportation. The Bohemians Salon uses Davines exclusively and is just a block off the Deptford Bridge DLR stop. Voila! the perfect solution. The Bohemians website has an online appointment scheduler which I used to make appointments for myself and my husband for the same day. The scheduler worked very well and we received appointment confirmations within a few minutes. My appointment was with Lucca, who worked a major miracle on my fine, wavy, color-treated hair which was so dry, brassy and in generally poor condition that I believed I needed to cut several inches. Lucca is a talented technician and I felt comfortable that my hair was in great hands right from the start. Lucca asked me a few questions about the services I wanted and then laid out a plan to accomplish my wants. I have never felt as happy walking out of a salon as I did after Lucca completed my hair services. I loved having fresh color and losing the ragged ends but I really was completely thrilled with the finished style which had more volume, shine, and bounce than I imagined was possible. The stylist was attentive - listening me describe in detail what I wanted and gently pushing me towards what was realistic**. She was friendly and talkative (very important qualities in someone who is going to spend hours hovering over your head, touching your hair). The products that the salon uses were sweet-smelling and didn't feel harsh on my hair. * Bleach London would've made me do a 48-hour skin test before touching my hair. NCW also has a skin test policy (to make sure people aren't allergic to their toner), but they were able to accommodate me by dying my hair without toning it. I started the process of dying my hair grey. Im 60 this year and I was so tired of dying my roots dark brown every 8 days.. I wanted to go dark grey all over and let my silver grow into that. But as anyone knows who has tried this.. its not an easy process. You have to go thru many stages to get where you want to be.. And the recent toner I had put on was a little too lavender for my taste and I wanted to replace that toner with another darker grey toner. But I wanted to use some more natural products if possible that would be gentler to my hair. So yesterday I went into NCW for a consultation. I spoke to a young woman in her 30's who looked at my hair reluctantly and asked me what it was that I hoped to achieve.. and then she said, " Well, we do have a wonderful natural product that would remove the toner you have.. But I certainly WONT DO IT.. as I think what you have done to your hair was a very bad idea.. we would NEVER do that here!.. Let me ask if anyone else here would be willing to do it." She went off and asked a senior stylist.. he tilted his head in my direction, made a face.. then shook his head. She returned. " He REFUSES to do it as well. But there is a place around the corner I can send you to called Bleach London, they will bleach your hair as much as you want them to... but that will certainly ruin your hair even more than you already have. I would never do what you have done to my hair.. as I love my long hair." to which I replied, " Let me get this straight. You say you have a natural product that will remove this toner without damaging my hair, but you are refusing to offer me that.... but are instead sending me somewhere where they will surely damage my hair? Sorry but i'm confused. I do not want to bleach my hair again.. I just want a different toner on it." She then went to 2 other stylists who also turned around and looked at me, made face of disgust and shook their heads NO. Their clients also turned around and stared at me.. (this is a very small salon, where you could hear everything that was being said) This public shaming made me feel just terrible. I left. I can honestly say, this was the most unpleasant, unhelpful and embarrassing hair experiences of my life. I have never encountered such rudeness or snobbery in a hair salon! To say to someone.. yes we "could " use our wonderful natural products on you but we refuse to do so.." What is the point of that? Other than to try to make me feel really terrible. I left the salon and walked to my car and burst into tears. I desperately do NOT want to be a woman in my 60's with died brown hair. I think it looks ridiculous. But really, who needs an experience like that? Trying to grow old gracefully is tough enough already! Anton at Le Leon had no trouble taking charge of my overgrown, processed and lifeless blonde mane! He has a great eye and is very comfortable making recommendations that are spot on! I liked the small quaint salon and the dog that sits in a chair right next to the washing station! He has a mix of clientele from all ages- and that means plenty of other people trust him, too! I went there back in September to get my highlights done. This tedious and expensive process - the bane of many a blonde's life - had become increasingly frequent as my hair had got very blonde from too much highlighting over the years and bleached from a 3-month trip to Asia. Although I loved the colour, my hair had become dry, dull, overprocessed and very knotty with dark roots coming through very quickly. The manager and lovely Linzi spent a good half hour explaining to me why instead of redoing my highlights as usual, I should tone the colour down. They convinced me I would gain more contrast in the colour, and have shinier and healthier locks as a result. They also told me how by adding darker tones I would end up needing to come in much less often. I was reluctant at the time to take their advice, but now my hair is indeed healthier and shinier as a result...and I'm still blonde, just a bit darker. I also now only need my highlights doing every three months rather than every six weeks. No other hairdresser in all my years of highlighting has ever suggested this approach. Apart from this, Le leon has got all the essential ingredients of a fine hairdressers - skilled cutters (Linzi and Paula are my favourites), plentiful and current magazines, decent complimentary coffee and one of the finest head massages-during-your-hairwash I've sampled. One time a few years ago, I was mid-massage and mid-moan and tilted my head to notice Geri Halliwell at the next door sink. So it's got celebrity cache too. Definitely a cut above the rest.

I arrived and within a minute was checked in and told to sit in the waiting area. After a couple of minutes my hairdresser came over and discussed with me what I wanted done. As I was going for a cut and colour, she discussed with me what colour I wanted and how I wanted the cut, advising me on what would suit me and what wouldn't. She then mixed the dye up in the back and put it on. Whilst it was on she checked it and massaged it in when necessary and took it off at the right time before cutting and styling it. I was also offered and given tea and water (although there was other options available). The service is great and you really do leave feeling like you've been pampered!

For the same price I had been spending for cuts and color, I could have been receiving them with savory nibbles, wine and chocolate biscuits! The Chapel is very different from other salons, and not just because they feed you and allow you to meet stylists as chirpy and charming as Lucinda. The first "I've never done this before" happens if you want to change your hair color. The Chapel requires a skin allergy test 48 hours in advance, which may sound annoying, but it comes with refreshments and is free of charge, so enjoy it! When I went in for my test, I was seated on one of three comfy sofas in the waiting room. I had arrived a bit early and settled into a couch with an Ottolenghi cookbook (no magazines in the waiting area caused another pang of "how different"). Looking around at the coffees people were enjoying with a foil wrapped sweet made me regret turning down a drink when one was offered by the man at the reception desk. I had enough time to convince myself I NEEDED the cookbook before Lucinda popped into the room. The bright Australian casually sat herself down next to me, giving me the feeling we had known each other for ages. She and I discussed the new cut I wanted and we pawed through a tackle box filled with color swatches until I found the perfect new hue for me. Lucinda explained that The Chapel charges by the hour and not by the service. The amount of time needed for an appointment is determined before you are in the stylist's chair, so you know what the bill will be in advance. When read about the charging policy online I thought the whole practice would fill me with anxiety. I imagined the feeling I get when I'm in a taxi, watching the meter click higher and higher. Luckily, this isn't the case at all. I was full of excitement when I returned a couple days later. Dropping my bag off in a little locked drawer, I was ready to unwind. I had decided to treat this as a little spa break and indulgently requested wine when asked if I wanted a beverage. I sipped my complimentary vino while Lucinda applied my color. This was done downstairs, in front of a modern fireplace. I then curled up on a bench seat with a magazine (they do exist here - they're just not in the initial waiting area) and nibbled my veggie crisps. I love the big reveal when you blowdry your hair after dying it and see your new shade for the first time. This time did not disappoint. I had it done weeks ago and am still in love with it. The cut is great too. A little choppy in one place, but I just haven't had time to go back in and have it fixed. I have a strong feeling that would be done quickly and with a smile. The Chapel made me feel more important than I have since I quit my "real job" in Washington, DC a year ago. It's a wonderful place that I can't believe exists. Just too good to be true.

The Chapel, as its name might suggest has converted me. Its a new religion. Upon arrival I was given a full tour of the space and it was explained to me how the salon works, which is different to anything i have experienced before. The waiting area is big fluffy comfortable couches where I'll meet my stylist to chat about my haircut as I want it. Tea/Coffee/Wine and snacks are offered, complimentary. You can see why I fell in love at this exact moment.... have a chat, have a drink, talk about my hair in a way that makes sense to me. As a friend pointed out to me recently, hairdressers have the power to change how you look, very directly and it is SO important to be comfortable with them being in charge of that for you. What is lovely about the whole experience you don't feel like another customer, you don't feel rushed through the salon as if they have some quota to meet. There's a sense of value to you. At every point through my haircut I was offered a chance to play with my hair and see how it felt and whether i liked it or not. I'm not the girliest girl, but the part of me that relishes in make-up and dressing up simply lights up in this place. Its not snooty, or overarching, it just makes sense.
