When I stopped in, I got to meet and pet sweet Elsa, which was the highlight of my day. She's a very calm and friendly good girl. The shop is in North Syracuse on Main Street, near a bunch of other businesses. If you don't know where you're going, you can easily pass it by because the signage sneaks up on you. There's a little lot on the side. When you walk in, you immediately see a case stocked with fancy dog treats. There were some shaped like tacos and cannolis and other adorable things, and many were Easter-themed. I couldn't resist packing up a couple to bring to my family's dog for my Easter visit. The pooch's reaction is to be seen, but I'm sure she'll be stoked. I asked the owners if they made the biscuits in house, but learned their delivered in from a boutique doggie bakery. There's a wide variety of cat and dog supplies here, at various price points. I'm not the sort to splurge on pet food, but if you are there are a lot of organic options. However, there's also a pretty wide and interesting variety for such a small store, and as I mentioned, there's items that fit with various budgets. This is a cute spot, and I think it's nice to support local rather than always buy from the big box pet stores. I'd come back, and I'd certainly send any animal lover this way.

In summary: While they are superficially friendly and pleasant to work with most of the time, when things go wrong their customer service is very lacking. My initial experience with Petco was good; We bought a parrot (Green cheek conure, the one you see in one of my my profile pics) at this store The lady in charge of the small pets area at that time (Peggy) was very knowledgeable, polite and helpful; we initially spoke with her first, then went home to think about it and returned to buy the parrot. We returned the next day (Sunday), Peggy wasn't there so we were assisted by a less knowledgeable employee (he gave us the wrong supplies for the bird, didn't know what food we should buy etc.) who fortunately is no longer there, and Peggy was later replaced with another less knowledgeable employee. We were buying the bird with a gift-card. At the register my daughter was so excited, with the bird / bird carrier in her arms looking forward to bringing the bird home. Unfortunately, one of PetCo's servers went down- the one the processes gift cards. The cashier could not process the gift card. The "manager" came over and explained that we could not purchase the bird until their issue was resolved; so I said "You're not going to take that bird away from her, because of YOUR issue, are you?" Well, they did- I'd been shopping there for years but they couldn't make any arrangement for me when THEIR system was down! It was easier for them to make a kid cry instead. I happened to know that any customer oriented organization should never be reliant on a single server. One other day, shortly after I took a photo like most good Yelpers do, the small pets manager comes up to me and demanded that I delete the photos taken, in her presence, or that I would be arrested by the police. She claimed it was against PetCo policy and they used the police to enforce it - for those of you that know anything about the police their job is not to enforce private company policies, thats a civil matter, so dont ever be intimidated when someone threatens you with the police for something like this. I cannot give the place one star because the fact of the matter is they have many decent staff member & no one has better prices on pet food than PetCo; so now that is all I use them for- you get a much better deal if you buy online + select in-store pick-up. For a very reasonable cost you can wash your own dog, they supply everything (except the dog) no time limit & they clean up the mess. Diane will also trim nails for a small additional fee. Groomer and receptionist take their break at 8:00 to smoke and chat in the parking lot. Also, groomer arrives to work at 7:45 and needs a break prior to beginning the day. How do I know this? Staff thought I left as soon as my dog was dropped off. I was still in the parking lot a few minutes later, so I saw them. Groomer is lazy and doesn't bother to use shampoo or conditioner; not sure what product is supposed to be used for deshedding, but if one was used, it's definitely unscented! For basic baths, expect to pick your animal up wet, not fully cleaned, and unbrushed. $103 to have 2 dogs rinsed. I had to do about everything I paid for. Had to clean my dogs face, eyes, nose, and ears in addition to brushing. Loose debris in fur was not removed because the animals were not brushed.

We did day care for years at this location without a single incident but as far as grooming and boarding those are another story. The first time I tried to get my dog groomed there as a puppy I was told she wad too aggressive and she needed sedatives to be groomed and though they didn't groom her they still charged me. For perspective she now goes to a groomer with no sedation and has no problem. I just kind of figured this was a one off or a personality issue then we boarded her for the first time. She came home with a hacking cough and we rushed her to the emergency vet. After 8 hours and $500 she was diagnosed with kennel cough and we were instructed to let the facility she was staying at know. When I did that they said well she didn't get it here. I advised them she had not been around any other dogs and the er said to notify the facility so other owners could take precaution. They still didn't believe me and never notified other boarders. We didn't board for three or four years after that but when we lost our dog sitter close to a vacation we decided to try again since a lot of time had passed. About three days after we picked her up I noticed her licking a spot on her leg so I looked at it and found a hole. A red wound that the inside looked like a puncture. My dog is very fluffy and I didn't know how long it had been there. I made an appointment with the vet and reached out asking if anything had happened while she was at boarding. I wasn't rude, accusatory, or asking for a refund but I knew the vet would ask so I figured I would get ahead of it. The owner responded very defensively saying they do a full inspection and watch the dogs 24/7 so nothing could have happened and to let her know what the vet said. The vet said it was likely a cyst that ruptured and looked like it had been open for a while. She was given antibiotics and I let the boarder know again not accusing them of anything or asking for a refund. She again came back very defensively and said she did not feel comfortable caring for my dog again. I was so taken aback as we had done day care loyally for years and never accused any one of anything but had the right to ask questions. I had about 5 day care days and 3 boarding days left on my account. I told her fine if she feels that way then she can refund the days on my account. That was on 4/11 and it took three more emails and almost a month for her to actually mail me the refund.

My favorite aspect of The Kia Foundation, Inc. is their pet food pantry. They will accept any pet food, even if it's been opened. I have a very…read moresweet dog who is afraid of being groomed so I have always had to sedate her but this place seems to have put her at ease as she looks amazing and did not come home stressed out for the first time In five years. She did so well in fact that they suggested trying to groom her without sedation next which would be amazing. Everyone there seems to really care about the dogs and doesn't just treat it like a chore. I have had bad grooming with my dogs in the past and wish I knew about this place sooner. The owner Jackie groomed my dog and asked lots of questions and really cared and wanted to know how she could make Luna more comfortable. They know how to earn the trust of the dogs and our pup seems happy after the grooming. Took my 5-month old for her first grooming there for her first grooming and she also came back happy and beautiful. Highly recommend this business.
