There were yuppies chillin to the smooth yacht rock and the family crowd was having a rowdy fun time playing beach volleyball ball. Everyone was enjoying the vibe and so did we. We're the drinks spectacular? Nope. Was it a pretty venue? Definitely not. But this place gives the community a casual fun space to enjoy in the way that best suits the moment, so whatever Root River Center is, it's doing something right.

Back to Whirlyball this time for a private event I worked with their team to organize the event and…read morethey did a good job putting the program together we started downstairs with renting a court and a few bowling lanes. We also added some large games to our space as well. We then made it upstairs for our dinner program and the buffet was amazing! Delicious and tenor serving they have a very nice event space upstairs. The staff were very nice. Two notes would just be that they had our program run on a court back to back with another group so it was ackward since we needed all those large games set up, had preset beverages and appetizers. Plus a full check in table. The other court was empty so I'm not certain why we weren't just in the other space. Then they also only had the front bar open in the first hour versus the one right at the courts and bowling where we were and other guests enjoying their time. In the case of our group it also left us separated into two since as they waited for drinks then they just became comfortable in the front bar talking. They did open the upstairs bar once we moved up there. I would book an event here again I would just make sure to clearly note some of those details and/or even book the court an extra hour to ensure no crossover even though I was able to set up 15 minutes before our event start. We were at group of 4 and they let us use two lanes so we could get more games in during the hour rental period. There is an area with some arcade games, as well as several dart boards and a pool table. The business has a small town feel and does not seem like anything has changed since the 70s or 80s. They have a full bar and also have a food menu. If you are in the area and looking for a quick game of bowling, especially at an odd time, check out Lucky Lanes!

Unless you have a large crew, there won't be much sit and wait time, like on a regular lane. Note that it is manual scoring. They do provide a cheat sheet to help with this, and it may help as well to number your frames, just in case you get lost in all the up and down. Since it is residential, you might have to circle the block a few times to find parking, but don't let that deter you. A walk back to the car might be the perfect excuse to stop by the food truck across the street.

Location is a little sketchy, and this is definitely a dive bar at its finest, but the real star of the show is the duck pin bowling located in the back. For those not familiar, it's a much shorter, elevated lane than regular bowling. Select from different weighted, softball size balls and roll it down the lane. It's much easier than regular bowling and scores tend to be high, so it's a nice ego boost and tons of fun! And instead of a machine re-racking the pins, there are teenagers that sit back there to set them up. Tips: Cash only for the bowling which is $5 dollars a person. Make sure to tip your pin setters! Its best to call in advance to reserve a lane, but walk ins welcome. There are four lanes and you can rent one or more for an hour and a half each. They bowl super late, and is an awesome spot to hang out with a group and play a few rounds! Come knock some pins down at this legendary spot!

Also, while it's not a big deal, I was disappointed my friend was forced to throw away the remainder of his sub while helping someone carry their belongings in. While I understand the policy (no carry-in food or beverage), volunteers provided free food for the event. It's not like we were impacting sales or carrying in a bag of McDonald's or a box of pizza. In any regard, the place serves its purpose but feels run down. I'd go if family invited me, but not if I had a choice between here and somewhere more modern.
