All I came here for was mini bowling, and I got that in spades. It was a Sunday night, so two lanes were open with no reservation needed. I opened a tab at the bar, headed back to the awaiting lanes, and proceeded two bowl a couple games in quick succession. Unless you have a large crew, there won't be much sit and wait time, like on a regular lane. Note that it is manual scoring. They do provide a cheat sheet to help with this, and it may help as well to number your frames, just in case you get lost in all the up and down. Since it is residential, you might have to circle the block a few times to find parking, but don't let that deter you. A Milwaukee icon on the south side! This is a legendary bar that moonlights as a mini bowling alley. Location is a little sketchy, and this is definitely a dive bar at its finest, but the real star of the show is the duck pin bowling located in the back. For those not familiar, it's a much shorter, elevated lane than regular bowling. Select from different weighted, softball size balls and roll it down the lane. It's much easier than regular bowling and scores tend to be high, so it's a nice ego boost and tons of fun! And instead of a machine re-racking the pins, there are teenagers that sit back there to set them up. Tips: Cash only for the bowling which is $5 dollars a person. Make sure to tip your pin setters! Its best to call in advance to reserve a lane, but walk ins welcome. There are four lanes and you can rent one or more for an hour and a half each. I can't say enough about the place. Loved it my whole life. I'm glad people still come down and know how to have a good time. Koz was truly a living legend. He ran away as a child and found himself on a farm in Chippewa Falls all the way from Milwaukee. There at the age of 11 he worked on his uncle's dairy farm where he had seen his first "full" plate of food. He was awarded All Conference Defensive Player of the Year in high school with 5 defensive touchdowns. Later, volunteering for Vietnam for three terms, he earned a bronze star for bravery with two stars for bringing back dead soldiers from behind enemy lines. Also recieving a purple heart among other recognitions. Not only fathered 3 of his own children, adopted two, and fostering 3 more as well. This selflessness did not end there where he and his wife Carol helped out countless neighborhood youth. Teaching them the values of self worth and how to persevere through there personal struggles. The legend of Koz is timeless and I encourage anyone and everyone from all walks of life to give it a try and see if they still know how to have a good time. read more

Called weeks ahead to book a 10pm round for my company's holiday party. Got a call a couple days ahead of time to tell me they overbooked the night and we wouldn't be bowling until "closer to 10:30" Arrived at 10:15, bought two pitchers thinking we would just wait 15 minutes. At 11:15 there was no sign that we would be bowling any time soon, so basically the main event of the night for our company party literally couldn't happen, and didn't happen, because of piss-poor time management and frankly just greed on the part of whomever booked the night. I told the person who ruined our party that it was shit, and he profusely apologized, took my number, said he would text me so he could make it right and give us a free round. The real draw besides the great service, regulars, and cheap beers in the lanes. Mini bowling, or duck pin bowling, is a tiny lane with a tiny ball and human pin setters. It's wild. The rules are no walking on the lanes and the ball has to touch the floor before a pin (because that's a real problem). You guys! This place is so cool! Came here for a friend's birthday party, having never been here and having zero experience with mini bowling. Randomly, the week I went, WUWM's Bubbler Talk took a deep dive into the history of duckpin bowling. And, while, Koz's mini bowl is similar to duckpin bowling, it's a bit different (different lane length etc). It is super similar to that, though. If you also have no experience with duckpin bowling OR mini-bowling, here's the sitch: It's similar to regular bowling, in that, there are ten pins and a ball in which to attempt to strike down the pins. The differences: +The pins are a shorter and squatter +The ball, while clearly made of a similar substance, is smaller than a regular bowling ball (maybe just a skosh larger than a softball) and has no finger holes +Here, the lane is actually elevated a step. Because you never step on the wood floored lane, no bowling shoes required! +The lane is significantly shorter than a standard bowling lane Koz's is completely vintage (ie: guessing there have been no updates since they began business in 1978). Unlike more modern bowling alleys, Koz's has human pin setters (I'm not sure why I find this so completely throw-back-thursday delightful, but I do). Those same pin-setters also roll your ball back to you. You'll want to keep an eye on the track (and your fingers) as you grab a ball to bowl, they roll those balls back quickly! The good news? You'll likely bowl the best game of your life. Strikes aren't such a rare thing in mini-bowling. That's ok. You can still make everyone high-five you when you get one. I did. Beyond that, the bar is dive-tastic, serving simple, strong drinks as any good dive bar should. Bowling costs $5 per person and you should definitely make reservations (not sure if they take reservations for anything less than parties?) as there's only four lanes in the joint. Oh and it also only takes quarters. But, that's the character that makes the place great. Every place can't be the same!! BUT, I will say it wasn't great and was kinda gross that the friends I was with had to "ASK" to turn on the water in the men's bathroom so they could wash their hands. If you grew up in Milwaukee, you probably know all about Koz's. It's certainly an institution, but I'd never been before last night. Pretty much every review has covered the bowling basics - make a rez, tip your pinsetters, be prepared to keep score, etc. Other things worth knowing: *No special shoes needed - huge bonus for me as that always grosses me out at other places *Pitchers of PBR = $7. Hooray! *Pool table & dartboard available for non-bowling fun *Cards are accepted but they'd prefer cash. You'll need cash to tip your pinsetters anyway. *Ladies bathroom = pretty good. *The jukebox is incredible. It only takes quarters (available from the bar) and has quite an eclectic mix. There's the good (Beastie Boys), the bad (The Eagles) and the truly unspeakable (Nickleback & Tool). A lot of it is "mixtape" style so choose carefully. Going to Koz's is like hanging out in an extremely awesome finished basement last renovated in the 70s. Lots of wood paneling, animals that have been immortalized by the local taxidermist, and a bar stocked with Milwaukee favorites. Even the most uncoordinated can dominate at mini bowling after chucking the balls down the lane a few times, and the $3 mini pitchers of beer help level the playing field. Be sure to bring cash to tip the pin-setters: they risk their limbs jumping between lanes and among careening balls to ensure you have a fun time. Also, make sure at least one person is capable of performing drunk math - you're responsible for scoring your own game. The only drawbacks are that it gets extremely crowded around the lanes and you feel like you're constantly in someone's way, and that the bathrooms might qualify for cesspool status. Right when I walked in the owner, an older women that is soooo sweet, greeting me and my girlfriend. It was the first time being there and it looked like we got there before the crowds and right when they opened. She suggested we get a pitcher since it would save us money and said one of the neighborhood boys would collect the pins for us and don't feel bad that they weren't all set up. I have never experienced anything like this before. The lanes are 3 feet wide and only 20 feet deep and the ball is the size of a Bocce ball. Behind the tiny pins is a teenage neighborhood kid who puts the pins back in place. It is a hoot! The atmosphere is a mix of up north bar mixed with your german/polish grandparents house. The owner after we finished our game and settled up, gave us a few free game passes so we could come back when it is busier to see it then. Great owner, great establishment, and a very unique place to go to. read more

My kid sister came in town this weekend to visit after her 20th birthday. I was trying to find some fun things to do with someone uninterested/unable to enjoy beer and the many Milwaukee beer attractions. She loves bowling, so I immediately thought of Koz's. On Friday I looked on both their website and yelp for the hours. Nothing anywhere. They did list the phone number so about 3:00 on Friday I called. Ring and ring and ring and ring. Called back 20 minutes later. And 20 minutes later. Around 7:30 I tried again and someone answered. They were talking to other people and half listening to me. I asked what time they open on Saturday. He said 2:30. I said two of us would like to bowl, did I need a reservation? He laughed a little and said nope. Hung up. So come Saturday at 2:30 we walked in. The door was propped open, and there were about 20 people in there bowling. Obviously they hadn't JUST opened. We went in and the guy behind the bar asked what time our reso was for. I told him we were advised we didn't need one. He told me that they were booked for the afternoon, but one party was running late, so we could sneak in. Well we went in there and just started bowling. The teenager that was picking up our pins kept staring extremely awkwardly at us. The bowling itself was fun, but there was no music playing and not much going on. After one game the bartender asked if we were done yet. Well we had planned on playing around 5 games! I felt more than a little peeved that we had to be one and done because we were misled and laughed at the night before. A couple times the phone (an old spin-dial, located in back by the bowlers) was ringing and ringing and ringing. No one looked twice - explains why I couldn't get anyone! At one point an older lady patron answered the phone and went to look for the bartender because she didn't know how late they were open. After getting kicked off bowling, we plugged the dart machine. We were drinking up front and playing darts for a minute when about 25 people showed up with presents, pot luck, cupcakes etc (if you've been here, you know how tiny this place is) and stood directly in front of the dartboard. Given their "reservation" it was physically unsafe for us to continue playing darts, which sucked again. Overall I can see the concept being fun, but everything was SOOO poorly executed that I would hesitate before coming back. read more

No nasty bowling shoes when playing mini-bowling. Just smaller lanes and balls, and tons of fun! This is not for little kids as it's in a dive bar. It is Wisconsin, so I wouldn't be surprised if someone did bring their kids. There's only four lanes, so you have to call ahead and reserve a time (which lasts about two hours). Be prepared as you might have to reserve your time at least a day in advance. You can play as many games as you'd like during your time, but it costs $5 a game. Along with the games, the drinks are cheap too! Not a whole lot for beer, but you'll be able to find something. The games go by pretty fast as it's easy to chuck the ball down the lane and hit most of the pins down (woohoo high score!). They have people set the pins up for you, so be patient with the set up. My other favorite part was you have to keep track of your own score. I don't know what it is, but I think it's fun to do some simple math and everything up. Only downside was when trying to use my credit card to pay, the bartender/owner said it wasn't working and didn't make much of an effort to figure it out. The vibe of this place has not changed since the 60's, or maybe even the 50's, and that's a good thing. The time capsule that is Koz's is certainly part of the charm, as is the older school jukebox, formica bar, and plethora of wood grain paneling. Most of the mini bowling balls are cracked and chipped, the floor is uneven and the lanes are warped. And you won't care if you're doing it right. Recognize that it's all part of the experience and have some fun. A mini ball does not have holes for your fingers so just palm the thing and do what most do' chuck it as hard as you can down the well worn lanes. That's when the real entertainment begins and the manual (aka human) pinsetters jump the partitions behind the lanes and manually set your pins. In a world of technology this old fashioned approach is certainly part of the schtick. But the cheap lane fees and even cheaper drinks make for one entertaining evening. And big bonus points for no gross bowling shoes that have been worn by the masses, just good, clean fun for all! read more

I certainly haven't been everywhere in the world. But I have been to a lot of places. And none of them are anything like Koz's Mini Bowl in Milwaukee. From the exterior it has all the charm of a bomb shelter or a closed barber shop. There isn't a big bright sign, and barely any neon. But once you head inside, you start to realize why it is a Brew City staple. The back room features their world-famous "Mini Bowling." It is just like regular bowling, except at 1/4 or 1/3 the scale. The balls are about the size of shot puts, and the lanes are about 15 or 20 feet long. A real, live, breathing human pin-setter sits on a ledge in a booth behind the pins and racks them up for you, always displaying a deftness and awareness that surpasses his job title. How they avoid having their shins smashed dozens of times a day I'll never know. The game is impossible to replicate outside of Koz's confines, but is vintage Milwaukee. It's $3 per game per person, no special shoes required. Make sure to bring cash to tip the pin-setters. A buck or two per person per game usually seems appropriate. The bar is like a wood-paneled VFW lodge, and it looks like nothing has been altered for decades. For example, a newspaper clipping of Robin Yount's 3000th hit is taped to the wall, yellowing since September 10th, 1992. I've loved Koz's since my first visit, and it is stop #1 for any out-of-town visitor I am entertaining. I'll summarize the rest in pro/con fashion. Pros 1) Beer prices. $3 mini pitchers of PBR or High Life. Drafts are even less and regular pitcher prices aren't much higher. It is an incredible value to go from "sober" to "put on your crunk shoes." And for the ladies, mixed drinks are very reasonable. 2) All the standard neighborhood bar accessories. Great juke box. Pool table. Darts. Punching machine. Buck Hunter. Local sports on the tube. 3) There are just a handful of mini bowling lanes, but they take lane reservations over the phone, and in all my times there I have never had a lane unavailable at the time I reserved it, sometimes with as little as 30 min notice for them to call a local pin-setter. 4) Bar tenders are blue collar local guys, and are always friendly and quick to serve a customer. The place is never vacant, but I never find myself waiting for anything, which I love. Cons 1) This ain't the Ritz, folks. It isn't in the best part of town. The regulars don't look like they've seen the sun in a few months. Parking is on the street. And there is barely any food to speak of. If your friends are snobs, you can leave them at home or head to Kil@Wat downtown. 2) The recent smoking ban in Milwaukee went in to effect July 5th, and though I've rarely seen patrons smoking since then, the odor of eons of Winstons just kind of inhabits the place most of the time. 3) Credit cards are accepted but subtly discouraged. Make sure to carry cash to tip your pin setters. AmEx not accepted. 4) The bathrooms leave something to be desired. 5) If you're terrible at math, you'll have trouble scoring the bowling yourself. Though the bartenders are usually happy to do it for you, especially if you're lucky enough to be a lady. In conclusion, if you and your buddies are looking for fun practically any time drinking feels appropriate, Koz's is one of my favorite spots in Milwaukee. And Wisconsin. Hell, in America. If you live in Milwaukee and you've never been, shame on you. If you've called to reserve a lane, I'm proud of you.
