I used to go in here quite a bit - looking back, I'm not sure why. Depression? Stuck in a rut? I…read moredon't know, just had got used to the place as a student and found it okay for the odd mug of tea.
The problem is the food and the pricing, really. Rather big problems for any restaurant. There's also the issue of it feeling like a cold, dark rabbit hole when you get inside. The staff are very pleasant, can't complain there, they're nice enough to make me feel like a bit of a weasel for writing this, but after the last dining experience I had there I just can't write anything else. I'm not even sure if they're still in business in the current economic climate, but if the food is as bad as it was a few months back, then I'd say they're probably struggling. On my last visit (last in every sense of the word) I had the daily special which was marketed as some type of southern sauced chicken served with rice. I got a tiny portion of the chicken with a little heap of mushy, overcooked rice and the final kick in the teeth for me was that it was absolutely, categorically, irredeemably cold. Stone cold. Sorry, but one basic and major requirement I have of fast food joints and diners is that I'm at least served a hot meal. Even total slop isn't that bad when it's hot, but this was stony stinking cold. I was too disgusted to even bother sending it back. My companion had her usual omelette, which was normally okay, but as usual a stingy size and the side order of (admittedly very tasty) chips was as always a tiny bowl! We both had tea and the bill was over £20. And that's for average food at best, far below average due to the coldness, and I don't think the heating was even on in the joint either.
To be fair, I once had a nice special in here. The fish pie. Homemade and very tasty and hot! So one of the chefs at least knows what he's about... but I guess we just ran out of patience. One too many raggedy omelettes and stingy portions and totally dead, cold atmosphere.
Wouldn't recommend spending your hard earned cash in here. Use your pennies on the extra bit of petrol to get yourself up to Annalong and go to The Galley for some spectacular food instead. At half the price!
