In a town where most retail establishments struggle, this one keeps improving. On my last visit,…read morethe store touted its offering the greatest selection of organic produce in northern Michigan. Most of their offerings are more conventional, but all the basics you'd expect in a well stocked grocery store are there. An in-store bakery and deli offer some fresh to-go items. The meat selection is quite impressive for the locale, as are the beer and wine offerings. Checkout lines can get a little backed up--it would be nice to see some self-checkout stations installed. But, this place is a bit smaller than most Family Fares and space is tight. They still put the space they have to good use.

But better than that...they back up who they are-ethical folks. There was not to be found on the magazine racks one tabloid or gossipy magazine. Not one. I looked at the checkout counter and looked around at the other one and not a one to be found. As you know, gossip does more harm than good and most of the time it is not factual only sensational, grabbing the attention of those that fall for that sort of baloney. I complimented the cashier on this and she grinned and knew exactly what I was talking about. I expressed my thanks and said that I would let others know what a great grocery store this was. She, of course, was delighted.

The Our Family brand of products are very high quality and reasonably priced. It is wonderful to know we can shop for groceries at such a great supermarket while vacationing in Lewiston. On this most recent trip I discovered the Our Family brand "Breakfast Blend "coffee and was blown away by the fantastic taste! I even brought some home. And to make it even better it was on sale! Another favorite are the Our Family toasted oat cereal. So delicious for breakfast. The produce is fresh. We also got a few "Honey Crisp" apples that were perfectly sweet and juicy and crisp to bite into; just the way I like them. The associates who work here are very friendly, courteous, and knowledgeable. I wish we had a Family Fare close to home because it would be where we shop for groceries. We love this supermarket!

The unique thing about this store and reason for my review is that they also make homemade fresh donuts every Saturday and Sunday morning. These donuts are fresh made and quite often made while you wait for your order. They compare favorably to cider mill donuts in size and texture where there are multiple toppings to choose from to include the cinnamon sugar you get at cider mill's. Nice! If you are fan of these types of donuts, which I am, you should definately check this place to but be warned they are very popular on Saturdays and Sunday mornings with long lines out the door during peak tourist season in the summer. Three stars fior the store itself but 5 stars for the donuts

I was looking for a steak to throw on the grill and wanted to give this business a try as there are only a handful of markets on this side of the state that specialize in meats. They had all the meats you would expect too see where I settled on a Porterhouse steak based on 1). how the steak looked and 2) price which was very reasonable especially in light of todays inflated meat prices at $12.99 a lb . Upon getting the steak home I was quite pleased with the end product. The meat had an appropriate amount of fat for a Porterhouse, was very tender and just as importantly was very flavorful where the meat was definately a cut above the other grocery stores in the area and on a par with Neiman's which has tad higher prices in my opinion. Based on my initial experience I will definately consider this market in the future where I will be leaning towards a nice Ribeye the next time round. People are friendly and the location just a block off of US23 is very convenient and hard to \beat considering its close proximity to other key business in the area to include Walmarts, coffee shops and assorted restaurants. I'm not going to lie and say they're the absolute best in the world, but I've been eating them for over 25 years and look forward to these donuts every time I visit the cabin. I have yet to find a bakery that has this style. The cream in the long johns is very fluffy and not too sugary/gritty like other donuts. You really, you cannot pick a bad donut from here. My only hesitation in writing this review is that word is out now on this hidden gem and now I will have to go even earlier on Saturday mornings to get a better selection. As for the store...it's a typical up North Michigan grocery. No thrills but has a great small town atmosphere.
