We were looking for a local kind of a field trip so we decided to track down this Mennonite Bakery we had heard about called 'The Country Bakery' in Halsey. Can't get much more rural than this out in the huge open flatlands of agriculture fields and barns. We pull in to a property with a nice house. Fortunately there's a sign at the driveway entrance. The front door of the home is the business entrance and walking in is like walking into someone's living room. Just off to the right in the dining room you see it! A table with breads, maple twists, cookies, oatmeal cakes and more! There is a rack with extra goodies to resupply the dining table. We were warmly welcomed by the proprietor who offered to show us around. There is an open closet to one side with shelves of pottery mugs and jams. Another room nearby was like a gift room with various quiltings, puzzles, pictures and more. The next thing you know, we are being given the Grand Tour of the house that was built and designed by the family. The tour started in one of the kitchens where the magic happens! Then we were introduced to 'mom' a dear 102 year old lady who had a nice chair by the kitchen with a fantastic view of the water out back and the customer sales area. Upstairs are the various bedrooms, reading rooms, studies and such all with secretive doors to closets running along the length of the roof. The whole atmosphere of the place was extremely comforting and inviting, it was a pleasure just to be there. See my pics for the tour she gave us. We left with snickerdoodles and peanut butter cookies. We also munched up the molasses cookies before we made it off the property. The cookies and all the goodies came in various amounts so you could buy sparingly or go whole hog on a larger amount. We also purchased an oatmeal cake, a maple twist that resembled half a pizza and some chocolate fudge brownie that was so smooth and delicate it was like eating ganache fresh from the kitchen, which basically it was. They are only open on Fridays and Saturdays but they are doing a bang up business. By the time our impromptu tour was done, the customer area was fairly packed and most of the goods were gone, so we dove in and grabbed our assortment, plus I had to get one of their coffee mugs as a souvenir. Warm welcoming smiles, comfortable atmosphere and loads of freshly baked goods with none of the preservatives, some was even gluten free, yes, we will return.

Cute place that fits the town very well. They run out of donuts fast, so get there early.

I go ever chance. Her cinnamon rolls are the best ever. Never had a thing that didn't remind me of mygrandma's, and mother's baked goods.

My wife's parents highly recommended this place, so we decided to meet them here while we were in…read morethe area. It's located in what appears to be a historic building right on Main Street in Brownsville, OR. There are two entrances, but when we arrived, there was a note directing guests to use the Main Street entrance. We showed up in the early afternoon, which was after breakfast service ends at 11 a.m. That left us choosing from their lunch offerings--sandwiches, salads, and soups. There are about ten sandwich options plus a "create your own," several salads, and a couple of soup choices. The atmosphere is very laid-back. You order at the counter, and they bring your food out when it's ready. Despite the relaxed vibe, the place was quite busy. We saw a steady stream of people coming and going, and the four or five indoor tables were occupied most of the time we were there. As a group, we ordered a variety of sandwiches, a salad, and a bowl of soup--and everything exceeded our expectations. The soup was incredibly thick, almost like a casserole. The sandwiches were hearty and filling, and the salad was fresh and perfectly prepared. We enjoyed every bite and would absolutely return. They also have ice cream and huckleberry milkshakes (We absolutely love huckleberry milkshakes) in another area of the building, which were very tempting--but we managed to resist this time.

Hint: Get a cinnamon roll (what they are known for for)

We were heading to visit family in the area for dinner and were asked to bring dessert. While…read moredriving through Stayton, my wife remembered The Lovin Oven from years ago. We also recalled that there was some connection to Gerry Frank's Konditorei in Salem, which immediately caught our interest. After doing a little research, we discovered there's a deep and fascinating history linking the two businesses. The Lovin Oven began in 1983, when founder Doreen Helmemn operated the bakery out of her home. In 1993, the business expanded into a small storefront in downtown Stayton after being purchased by Mike and Valerie Schultz. Mike, who was formerly a logger, was personally taught cake decorating by the original founder, an origin story that adds to the bakery's charm and authenticity. One of the most interesting details we learned is that The Lovin Oven is the primary baker for Gerry Frank's Konditorei in Salem, a partnership that dates back to the 1980s. That relationship grew even stronger in 2017, when the Schultzes became co-owners of the Konditorei. Many people enjoying desserts at high-end restaurants throughout the region may not realize that their cakes were baked in Stayton. The Lovin Oven is especially well known for its Champagne Raspberry cake, Marionberry cheesecake, and an impressive variety of gourmet bars and cookies. Their menu also includes cakes, cheesecakes, cinnamon rolls, brownies, cupcakes, and more, something for just about every dessert preference. The bakery itself is housed in an industrial-style building that includes the production bakery, a storefront, and a small seating area where you can enjoy your treats on site. The outside is a unique with a black painted brick exterior. The customer facing area of the inside is industrial. We picked up a selection of cupcakes to take to dinner and were quickly back on the road. The cupcakes were a hit, everyone loved them, and they disappeared fast. It felt great to share something local with such a rich backstory. Overall, this was a fantastic experience, and we're glad we stopped. If you find yourself passing through Stayton or looking for high-quality desserts in the Willamette Valley, The Lovin Oven is absolutely worth checking out.
