He felt something wet and "Pokey" on it and panicked and dropped it. It shattered the floor. My husband apologized and so did my son to the front staff and asked for supplies to clean it which we did. My son apologized and tried to explain what happened. We thought that was the end of it but when the 6 of us were checking out with all our stuff I noticed my total amount was much higher than my math and so I asked the prices again. She said (right in front of my son) "The price is correct but he broke something so you'll be paying for it". To say that her demeanor was professional or kind would be a MAJOR stretch. My son of course becomes upset. I can completely understand that if people go in and break things even by accident a shop has every legal right to make sure it is paid for however this item was defective when he picked it up. We were lucky it didn't cut him. To sneak it into my purchase without a word and then be rude to a 4 year old is just gross. My husband ended up paying for it and we left the other 10 items behind. What do you do when visiting Buena Vista and you NEED something to do to get away from the AirBnB? You send an hour driving up snow-packed roads to check out a ghost town! The St. Elmo General Store is simply tucked away in a (nearly) abandoned ghost town. Lovely sitting, squished between the mountains... the views are stunning. The town is small, one single road in and out of the town. No public options are currently open.. everything is close for an undetermined amount of time until our friend Aunt 'Rona decides to give us a break... nonetheless it was nice to stroll around the town and peek in some windows of some lovely old shops and stores. Hope to go back some day when the world is normal again and we can actually go inside and get to experience what we read in other's reviews!

I always feel weird when shops like this take advantage of that heritage and capitalize on a culture that they are not a part of. I could be wrong-maybe it's owned by indigenous people, but the woman behind the counter certainly did not appear to be. That aside, this is a very eclectic place with a wide variety of souvenirs, gifts and goodies that may appeal to many people. I bought a couple items to take home as gifts, but noted that the quality of most of the things I saw make me believe that they probably won't last too long.
