WOW! St Elmo is a hidden gem!! We wanted to explore St Elmo after hearing about the history from my family. Staying at Mt Princeton, it was about a 50 min drive due to construction, some bumpy roads along the way but worth it! The history is beautiful and each building at St Elmo has the story of the history. It was an old ghost town that is preserved to history. There is a general store at the entrance of the town that sells souvenirs, old school candy (candy cigarets anyone?). We ended up buying a steel mug showing St Elmo and some Bazooka bubble gum! Prices are definitely reasonable and meeting the man who mainly works at the store, he is extremely friendly and will feel you in on anything you want to know. The store has antiques you can buy, St Elmo swag (t-shirts, stickers, mugs) and if you need any pain relievers or travel items, they have a small section! Great store, love supporting places like these.

Very friendly owners. Popped in early in the morning when the crowd had not yet showed up. They were very helpful and informative about the town and how to best discover it. They also have a cabin right by the store that they rent to guests. The cabin does not have indoor plumbing, but it may be the best way to experience St. Elmo away from the throngs of tourists. The ghost town is invaded by tourists from about 10am until about 5pm. So an overnight stay would provide a respite from the crowds and a chance to see all the wildlife that populates this area. Just as a note...as I see some misleading reviews, a drive to St Elmo DOES NOT require a 4 wheel drive if you come in the summer and if you drive from Nathrop. I drove my Prius, which is notorious for low clearance, and the gravel road was extremely well graded. Little to no bumps, large enough for two cars to comfortably share the road and absolutely no issues to speak of ;-) St. Elmo is approximately 1hrs drive from Buena Vista and approximately 30 more minutes passed Mount Princeton Springs.

So much fun. We weren't sure what to expect with this little town but it was one of the highlights of our whole trip. The general store was cute and had a lot of interesting things to look at. Staff was friendly and talkative. Be sure to buy a bag of sunflower seeds to feed the adorable chipmunks.

St. Elmo, Colorado is quite the drive, and WILL require a 4 Wheel Drive vehicle (preferably truck/SUV). Next to Bodie, California, this is probably the second most pristine ghost town in the nation. Regardless of season, it'll be cold up here due to the altitude - dress accordingly. If Hot Springs are your thing, be sure to visit Mt. Princeton Resort. I'd highly recommend an overnight stay there (and a dip in the spring water) before/after this trek into the mountains. Bring your camera!

Totally worth the drive--best ghost town of the 6 we hit on this CO trip, but also the hardest to find.

This is a place where practically everything in the store is valuable to me, but still surprisingly affordable. They have stacks and stacks of LPs and 45s that are in practically mint condition. Most of them look unused and they are almost all under $10. We bought Supertramp and 2 Tom Petty albums that rock. They also have costume jewelry like earrings, bracelets, necklaces and so on from many decades ago. And they have vintage hats, dresses and other clothing items as well. I tell you it's my heaven. But, then I saw their old cameras. I love collecting these things for some reason. This place had the accordion style cameras and an 8 mm video machine. I'm not telling you how much because next time I'm down there I'm buying them. Or maybe I'm getting them for my birthday... Anyway, the shop is run by a lovely, helpful older lady who genuinely cares about the quality of stuff she sells. And she doesn't try to hugely up the prices. If you're ever down this way stop in. Or if you're looking for a good day trip Canon City isn't a bad option. Just make sure you go on Saturday so you can have an Owl Burger because they are closed on Sundays.

But a fair enough place if you wanted to pick up a t-shirt. The reason for the 1 star review is that aside from the selection of items being pretty slim, the customer service was completely non existent. My friend and I were the only people in the place, which is relatively small and we walked a few circles around all the racks checking out the shirts for a good 7 or 8 minutes and the lady at the counter never looked up or acknowledged that we were present or said a word the entire time, despite us standing within just a few feet of her. It felt super awkward and kind of gave me the creeps. Being the only person in a shop standing next to an employee who is completely ignoring you just really threw me off, and it made the place seem uncomfortable and since I hadn't seen any shirts that really stood out I just sort of strolled on out of there and even as I left she never said a word or even looked in our direction. Crazy shit. You can read my reviews and see that I'm fairly easy to please and that I don't go negative very often. I don't have high expectations or think that businesses should cater to me. But when I go in a place and the vibe from the employees is basically fuck me like I don't even exist, that sucks and so I've gotta let others know so that they have a chance to avoid the experience that I had. To sum it up, mediocre t-shirts and sparse inventory with customer service that is apathetic at best. Can't recommend.
