In a huge post office I can find this a bit stressful, whereas Selly Oak's post office that is tucked away on Oak Tree Lane aids this dilemma by being a bit smaller and quieter. The staff are helpful and are a necessity for dumb kids like me who have no idea what they're doing! Recorded delivery and all that jazz is regularly offered and explained and I have often popped in to get supplies, envelopes and stationary. Serving the local area, it is usually pretty busy but decent service more than makes up for this.

Myself and my then housemates were in there on a daily basis and we had a sort of running joke with the owner - If we went in a bought a pint of milk, he'd say "No beer tonight?". The shop became known as 'No Beer Tonight'. When I moved to Selly Park two years ago, this became my closest post office and the first time I went in I was delighted to see that it was being run by Mr No Beer Tonight who, he explained, had moved out of the beer business and into the stamp business. Each time I pop in now I always have a chat with him and his wife (after all these years, we still don't know each others names - I should sort that out) and pass the time of day whilst I get my parcels, or whatever, ready for postage. This is a small post office but as it's a Royal Mail outlet it has all the services you'd normally expect. They have a small selection of goods for sale, but nothing like you'd see in a main or bigger branch. As the place is quite small, with only two counters, you take your chances when you pop in as you could either be the only one in there, or you could be stuck behind a few people, and we all know how annoying that can be. As an aside, this post office has a cash machine on the outside of the building. It's one of the only cash machines in the area, so that's worth knowing, too.

Therefore, you either have to have the right change, which I rarely do, or you have to pay by card. There are also a number or services that they do not cater for anymore (I am not sure why), but you can no longer get your car taxed here. However, the staff have always been polite and quite helpful when I have been in. There is nearly always a queue as it is in quite a busy location, but I have never waited agonisingly long to be served! If you use the post office for things other than general postage services, then I would recommend going elsewhere, however this store is good for stamps and such and they also sell packaging and a couple of cards.

Despite the mini-ness of this post office, it was still replete with a mini-queue (5 or 6 people). But this is par for the course, with post offices. I, however, was not in there to use the post office, but the 'convenience store' which was, indeed, convenient as I needed some milk, a can of coke and a chocolate bar. (OK so 'needed' might not be the operative word there, but that was what I was after...) It's a really strange shaped shop - partly because there is a mini post office down one side, and partly because, well, it's just an odd shape. There were all the usual newsagent-y stock, crammed into a small area. On the minus side, the girl at the till seemed super-bored and not particularly friendly. On the plus side, they actually sold skimmed milk - very few little shops do - and my three items only came to the princely sum of £1.94; which seemed like very good value to me.

A couple of years ago i went in to return a parcel and the woman behind the counter (it always seems to be the same person when i've been in) was so incredibly rude to the couple in front of me that i was quite shocked. I then got exactly the same treatment because id printed out the wrong returns label for my parcel - the woman talked, indeed shouted, over me as i was trying to explain. So incredibly rude. I went in this morning and again there was the same lady and i was reminded of that previous visit. She wasn't rude but she was just so miserable. No smile, no reply to everyday chatter, very curt and just plain miserable - i realised that this is how she is everytime i use the post office. So don't expect a welcome cheer and a chat with your local post mistress! On the plus side the post office has an external cashpoint for which they get one star....

The lady who runs the Post Office is always friendly, deals with requests efficiently and with a smile, and is generally a pleasure to deal with. The Post Office also sells greetings cards, stationary and other bits and bobs. The convenience store had everything you might need in a pinch, and is usually well stocked. A throw back to the traditional days of a local friendly Post Office. What more do you need?

It may not be any quicker at the self-service machine, seeing as I'm not a trained PO professional but I pretty quickly learnt the order the questions are going to come up on the big touch-screen in front of me to select what sort of postal service I need. You will be very unlucky if you have to wait in line here as there are plenty of machines that mostly work. If there is anywhere you may have to wait in line is if you need a 'proof of postage' receipt or are sending by any traceable service (recorded deliver, special delivery etc.) but otherwise your stamps are printed along with your receipt in seconds and you pop your post in the box and go. Even better, the post office is now open until 6.30 each week night. It is almost empty for the last hour as no-one knows about late opening. Until now that is.

It offers all the services you would need, including a travel money service, a selection of collectable coins/small gifts, insurance/banking and a cash machine. There are a number of counters (and normally plenty of staff), so you WILL have a wait (inevitable these days), but now there is a ticket system in place so you at least have some idea of how long that's going to be. Plus, no more queuing! This branch has installed plenty of seats so you can sit and wait to be called. I popped in to post a parcel to America this week. Obviously, being the festive season... It was packed. I took a ticket and was informed there were 15 people in front of me. When you get your ticket from the automatic machine, you select the service you require (meaning that people waiting for passport/financial services aren't in the same queue as people who just want to post something). Posting things abroad is expensive these days, but the friendly and helpful member of staff I encountered made the pain a little more bearable. Once I was called, I scooted up to the desk to be greeted with a big friendly smile and was asked what I required. I explained I wanted to post a parcel and the guy gave me a sympathetic look and asked me to place my item on the scale. Yes... It was pricey. After going through the American import protocol (filling in the little sticker that pretty much renders any surprise gone for the recipient as you detail EXACTLY what is in the parcel), we had a chat about who I was sending it to and what I was sending. Not in a creepy way, just an interested one. Whilst the exchange was going on, we got to the subject of upcoming travel plans. With two trips abroad planned (so far) for 2014/2015, we got on to the subject of their various financial services for people going on holidays. Now, I am pretty clued up on currency etc - but he had some pretty good information about services I didn't know the Post Office offered (and assured me he wasn't on commission). I left lighter in the wallet, but not too bothered about it. I did everything I needed fairly swiftly and without and hassle. The service I received was pretty fantastic and I left armed with information about things I very well may use in the future. I was initially suspicious that my post wouldn't reach its destination. It seems unusual not to be served through a glass partition after an enormous queue, but arrive it did. The staff seem knowledgable about postage options although they don't offer other post office services such as passport and tax disks. I rarely buy cards elsewhere now unless I happen to be in town when I remember and whilst Unique isn't really a bargain you certainly won't pay more than in other major 'card retailers'.

However, I have had a few unpleasant experiences with the staff. I went in a few months ago to post some parcels and the lady serving me misheard the type of postage I had asked for, when I told her of the mistake, she accused me of changing my mind instead of her mishearing me. She then angrily had recalculated the cost. I was quite shocked by her reaction and I felt as though she was having a go at me, when I had been nothing but polite. The other staff do not seem so bad, but the customer service here is really not up to the standard it should be and I feel as though they would rather be elsewhere than serving the customers. After my previous experience I have been reluctant to return, which is a shame as the services are useful and convenient for me.

Anyway, I digress...these days, if you do find a lesser spotted Post Office, and you want to use their services, it usually involves great long queues, which seem to be rather smelly affairs and not very pleasant experiences all round. Use your local Post Office, if you can find one. The one on Haunch Lane is local, handy and lovely and quiet. No queues, newspapers and magazines if you fancy a read. No penny sweets though.

Now, it is starting all over again due it being Xmas! Last week I went to collect 2 packages the postie had tried to deliver from the delivery office only to be told they were not there (48 hours later!)!!! I asked to have them re-delivered today when they eventually surfaced. So far they have not arrived and something tells me they are not going to... Ordering items online in this are appears to be a gamble due to this shoddy office - on this show the monopoly should be taken from Royal Mail. Like Sarah I would not use them if given the choice - I feel she was generous with 2 stars. I wouldgive them 0 if I could but 1 will have to suffice.

I have often had…read moreparcels waiting here for me and on more than one occasion I have sent my other half up there with my postal slip and my ID as I have often been unable to go myself due to their limited opening hours. Several times now he has been refused my parcels because he is not me. Now this may seem understandable, however, on the back of the postal slips, it does state that a 'nominated person' can collect the item for you if they take an item of your ID with them. It even states the types of ID you can take - some of which are not even photographic. If this was not frustrating enough, when I have managed to go up there myself, they have never ever asked for my ID! If I had the choice I would not use this delivery office, but usually my parcels end up there and I have to go through this process most of the time!
