My hubby and I have been long time Costco members and now that we're living in a rural part of Iowa, coming to Costco in Coralville is a luxury. So you better believe we stock up when we come here! This year, we happened to be in Iowa City during Black Friday and we decided to brave the crowds and go to Costco. To our surprise, it was not as chaotic and crowded as we thought it would be. I'd say it was a typical crowd that you would see on a Sunday, maybe a tad more shoppers. We stocked up on all of our essentials in preparation for the winter season and now our fridge and pantry are well filled. We even snagged a box of 24 cans of Spindrift for $9.99 which is absolutely the best deal we've seen for Spindrift. We also got a huge cut of New York strip steak for $7.99 per lb which will last us for months! All in all, this Costco is well stocked, well organized, and clean. The lines move pretty quickly, especially since they have a self-checkout and regular check out line. Service is efficient and there is a covered parking lot with lots of parking spaces. We are happy with our haul and will be back the next time we're in the city :) read more

Costco always comes up big! It is super easy to order on the app for local delivery within three hours. (Continue adding items to your order until it starts being shipped.) While the prices are a few dollars more online, I still find value in it! I really like that the same day shopping on the app has a 'new' tab as well as a 'trending' tab and of course a 'weekly savings' tab. You can find some great new items by perusing those. I continue as a loyal customer, even though it requires an hour+ driver. The value is there for so many things you buy in bulk like paper products. Watch the app or the flyer for specials. I made a trip, bought 7 items and saved over $20.00 in special discounts. Needed items, purchased in bulk, low prices, extra savings discounts. Good formula. I'm a Costco customer since early 2000s when they opened in Washington state. They have earned five stars by providing excellent customer service, products, and prices. Two months ago I was upset about a situation at the Coralville store. I complained and the manager helped me, no cop outs. My problem was resolved and my high opinion of them, especially their employees, has been solidified. Costco is a trustworthy company in my opinion, for what it's worth. THIS PLACE IS A ZOO! Granted we were in here on a Saturday afternoon, but still. I've never seen a Costco that isn't a zoo. We're new members because my husband heard great things about their optical department. We bought the $60 Basic membership online, knowing that one day we'd have to go to the store to pick-up our membership cards. Well, that day was today. We went to the membership services counter to get our cards. Almost immediately (and long before our cards were printed) we were told about the Executive Membership and Costco Citi Bank credit card. They're VERY aggressive at this location when it comes to upselling memberships and selling their credit card. We upgraded to the Executive Membership for an extra $60, but did not go for the credit card pitch. We don't use credit cards. You have to keep your Costco membership active to avoid the credit card's 15% APR. We also don't plan to shop at Costco weekly or maybe even monthly, yada, yada. However, if you like credit cards and Costco, this may be the perfect card for you! I actually commend the employee who tried to sell us the credit card. She spent far longer with us than she needed to. Upselling is a tough job to do and we almost gave in. Now back to the main reason we became members - the Optical Department. It was great. My husband found a pair of frames and with the lenses the total was less than $110. Barbara, in the optical dept. was lovely. Super friendly. She also gave us pricing information about contact lenses, so we'll likely be back for those. Overall all selection of men's frames was small (when compared to our eye dr.'s office). I think the $120 membership was too much for our needs and we won't get a lot of use out of it. We'll see how the year goes. We've been Sam's Club members for years, but now live in Iowa City. Sam's Club isn't nearly as hectic as Costco, and I much prefer that shopping experience to the one we had today. The attached/indoor/covered parking garage was a neat experience -- if parking garages are experience worthy. :) Could use a good trash clean-up though. Visa/Cash/Check only. Pros and cons to Costco for sure, but everyone should try it out at least once. read more

The food samples. Most of the people manning the little kiosks are warm, pleasant and helpful. A joy to deal with. To them i give a tip of the hat. But one woman in particular has repeatedly been rude to me and others. Her name? Sherry, I believe. I only know it because I asked some of the other ladies working there. When I asked to provide her first name, she outright refused. I had asked for her name to report her and she knew that. Today she worked the fried fish Tilapia cart. In the beginning I had asked what kind of fish it was. Without uttering a word in response she glared at me and tapped a box on top of the oven. No response. Okay. Good fish I mused. After I had swallowed it, I turned to leave. "Thank you," I said, politely. Again no response of any kind. This is not the first time she has been rude, two weeks previous she done something similar. Both times I have sought out and told her boss. I wonder what Costco policy is on being friendly or rude..... read more

One incentive to get a Costco membership? Gasoline. Gasoline prices at Costco are always quite a bit cheaper than other gas stations. Right now gas in Iowa City is around $3.89/gallon and at Costco it's $3.59/gallon. I'll take that extra 30 cents I'm saving per gallon and buy some of that pre-made Costco mac&cheese. It's always a hit in our household. Not to mention the street tacos, cheap Greek yogurt and irresistible samples. I love Costco. Generally, it's cheaper to buy household goods here (trash bags, paper towels, toilet paper, shower necessities). However, if you really want to penny pinch beware that not all of their food is a great deal. Pasta and beans are often cheaper at places like ALDI. Whatever you get yourself into, enjoy the spaciousness and covered parking lot of this Costco. It's superior to Delaware and D.C. locations that I've frequented purely because you don't feel like you're playing bummer cars with your carts and you don't have to fight someone's auntie for a parking spot just to get into the store. read more

Great store but one thing....Helen needs a job where is not working with customers. Each time I have been in there she is working the door checking receipts and yelling at people. I was at returns and the lady waiting in front of me was shocked at the behavior. I told her it is like that every time I am there, Helen yelling - TWO LINES PEOPLE, TWO LINES, WHO WANTS TO GO HOME, LET'S MOVE. Got to the desk to return my item and the person helping me asked how I was. My response - honestly, I'm a little scared of Helen. She should not be the last employee that customers interact with because being yelled at does not make you want to come back. read more

Overall, I love Costco. I'm able to stock up on regulars like toilet paper, paper towels, water, etc. Plus, I can find some good deals on some grocery items I regularly buy. However, I have to take a couple stars away for this location's sales tactics. I have the basic membership, and it works fine for me. Almost every single time I'm there, they start harassing me to upgrade my membership. It's extremely irritating and almost brought me to the point of cancelling my membership. 1) I highly doubt I spend enough to make it worth it. 2) Even if I do spend enough, that means I'm shopping quite often and well aware of the higher membership. So, there is no need to constantly try to sell to me. I get they have sales numbers they need to meet, but they have to understand their customers. I have been a member of both Sam's Club and Costco and much prefer Costco. This particular store is always clean and well-organized. Like so many others, I greatly appreciate the covered parking. Tonight I was there after lots of snowy, brutally cold weather and it was nice to be able to load the car in a dry, relatively warm atmosphere. Here are some of the reasons i love Costco. 1) Produce is taken care of better here. 2) The options for buying things in bulk that are healthy is easier here. 3) Its clean the floors are actually clean which makes me worry less in this covid time 4)Pork belly don't pass this one up its a great price and adds a flare to your food. 5) Parking i wish all costcos had this. Costco is NOT my thing. It's disorganized other than loose groupings of hardgoods versus consumables. It's always busy and that adds to my stress. I prefer regular grocery for the variety of options compared to this bulk style shopping. That aside, Costco serves its purpose. It's got some things I need but it's packaged only one way in larger quantities than our family of 2 could ever need. If you have a larger brood, I can totally see the value but on a tighter budget the deals are a little trickier. Occasionally we can find a few affordable bulk items we can make work for lunches and such. (Some of today's score: nice size veggie tray to snack on for the week $10, 6lbs of ground beef frozen $15, big bag of trail mix $12) Definitely adds up for me to have to make a second stop to get everything they didn't have here. Like others have mentioned, not everything is consistently available so you might have to be flexible with your shopping list. The covered parking is nice. The limited concession stand is novel and convenient for a snack after you run yourself ragged wandering around trying to find what you came for. The first thing I noticed was the indoor parking garage I have not seen in other Costcos nationwide. It was a nice surprise when you drive into the structure. This Costco is very organized, with staff manning entry and exits while cleaning carts and checking for masks. This location didn't seem congested and the layout was similar to other locations. The bathrooms are very clean and the store is relatively quiet. This was a nice visit except for the older man who ran the stop sign and almost caused a collision. read more

I've never felt like the employees are truly enjoying their jobs. For $15/hr and supposedly one of the hardest jobs to get in retail, I expect a little more than the perfunctory service I get when I visit this establishment. Typically I'm with friends as a membership to a warehouse doesn't do a single guy a lot of good. I don't think I've ever been engaged by someone handing out the samples and the cashiers seem to bury their heads and avoid any kind of personal contact. Straight up now tell me do you really wanna love me forever, Cos Costco! Rarely do stores elicit emotion when their name is spoken, but Costco will forever remain an exception. If one store is to be added to a area, it should always be Costco. Walking in, you're greeted with more TVs and pleasantries than you can shake a stick at and it only gets better! Venture into this wonderland and you're rewarded with prime grade steak, copper river salmon (a delicacy known to few in Iowa until now), an incredible wine selection, chicken bakes, cheese that fancy mice dream of, a vast clothing selection and bulk items that make anyone smile. If we could give Costco a 10, we would. It's seriously as close to the perfect store as you can get. We love it so much our son's first trip out of the house at 4 days old was here. He's a fan too! The praise has been sung and despite my attempts to build it up. The Costco must be experienced. Shopping here is akin to seeing an old friend every time you set foot inside and it's the only store I've never left disappointed. From the meats, produce and spirits to the clothing electronics and take out (chicken bakes are served in heaven), Costco is as good as I gets. Better selection and quality than SAMs club and it's rare to walk out without $100 worth of stuff you didn't know you needed. Great every time! read more

Just visited here since I was in the neighborhood for outlet shopping. I spotted this from I-80 and figured to check it out. The covered parking garage fooled me into thinking it was actually a distribution center. Inside, you realize it's the same size of the Des Moines Costco. It could have been larger given the space of the parking garage. Oh well, this will be a haven for winter time when it hits this area. Even with the rain, it's nice not to open out the umbrella and run for shelter. This Costco just opened a few months ago according to its website (6/27/12). However, it's a bit of a let down when you have a huge garage with not merchandise but instead it's just customer cars. If they had boats for sale, etc, then I think Costco would have attracted alot of folks with something different that other Costco's didn't have. read more

Apparently this store used to be an Amana warehouse or production facility or something. The staff is very friendly. I love Costco so much I drive 1 1/2 hours just to shop here. Sam's Club has nothing on Costco and the drive is well worth it - especially with the covered parking. Yup, I said covered parking. No more rushing to your car in the rain or snow to try to keep your purchases dry! I always make sure to fill up my tank at the gas station too. They always have the best prices for a high quality gasoline. I have been a Costco member for 12 years, was an employee for several of that, and have loved the company from both roles. The Kirkland Signature brand is always top notch and 9 times out of 10 I will grab that than the name brand. My favorite items to get at Costco are: meat, paper towels, toilet paper, frozen items, (fresh and frozen) seafood, snack bars, nuts, cheeses, organic items, and more. You really can't go wrong. The return policy is the best one in the business. If something doesn't fit, or I changed my mind, I just bring the purchase in the next time I visit. They really stand behind their products. Something to note is that electronics have a limited return window, but still very generous if you compare it to other stores. Tip: If you see a product you love with an asterisk in the upper right hand corner of the sign, buy it then. The asterisk means it won't be reordered so grab it while you can! read more

The covered parking alone is worth the membership fee. Sayonara to loading in horrendous weather conditions. As someone who is picky picky about meat (no thank you gristle), the meat department and prepared meals are fantastic. Although the produce, too, comes in bulk, the look and flavor is fresh. They also have a yummy bakery department. Costco has it all, technology, home goods, furniture, food, seasonal clothes, seasonal outdoors, seasonal floral. There is a variety of name brand and off brand selections of just about everything. Checkouts are quick and efficient. Nothing is bagged, but if you have a box or flat it can be packed in. My car needed new tires, after shopping around to dealerships and auto shops, Costco had the best price and maintenance package. My tires were special ordered...arrived in 2 days and they were on my car less than 24 hours later. read more

This Costco has terrible customer services. Watched as they impatiently worked with with a mother and her restless child in the return time a few weeks ago. We were eating and watch as they waited a very long time and by the time she got to the counter the child was melting down. The lady literally passed her up and tried to help the next person while she was trying to calm her child from waiting long. Today took the cake when I went to return something that was a refrigerated item. The lady (Patti) told me that they don't return refrigerated items which is not Costco policy. She was intentionally loud and attempted to humiliate me in the process. Makes me think about someone who might be struggling and needing to return something because they HAD to and how embarrass they would be. This is not professional or appropriate behavior! read more

It's a Costco, and I would say a pretty typical one at that except this is the only one I've been to that has covered parking which is a great concept especially when it's raining or when it's -10 degrees outside and you have to load an entire cart full into your car. Aside from the great parking, nothing really stands out to me about this Costco. In fact, as a couple other reviews have stated, the service at this one compared to others kind of sucks. No one here is friendly or even remotely nice. None of the workers here even attempt to look happy and talking to the people at the service desk makes you feel like you're a hassle to them. I understand from experience that working retail sucks, but I had always heard good things about working for Costco and have had such positive experience with staff in other stores. 2900 Heartland Dr, Coralville, Iowa Store; Sadly the customer service and/or the store does not meet minimal expectations! From the moment you walk into the store you're lost! No directions to customer service or where to purchase a membership! Once you get an employees attention, you're directed to "ENTER the exit and the counter is on the left". So you walk through all the people leaving pushing carts and arrive at the C/S counter, about 15 feet inside the exit..."on the left"...with lots and lots of people just milling around. NO ORGANIZATION!!! Someone (this day there happened to be 4) behind the counter yelling NEXT well who the heck knows if they're next or not?!?! This is adjacent to the food court so you have people (little kids) running around with food, people attempting to return items, potential new members and people attempting to exit the store with their purchases, all at the same time, in this congested area right at the exit. Sounds like the Fire Marshall needs to visit! After waiting, what seemed like hours (as an example, my sister COMPLETED HER SHOPPING before I was helped), to get assistance you get a 10 minute spiel on different membership details and what a great deal each and every membership package is! Just take my money and give me a temp membership already! After I finally got my temporary membership, I was so tired of fighting the crowd, I left! AND, surprisingly, I haven't been back! I am writing to specifically compliment the women at the Optical Department service counter. Recently, I decided to get new glasses. I am not someone who is comfortable with change -- I have had the same frame, lenses, and prescription for the prior 12 years. However, the staff have been extremely knowledgeable and friendly with me, whether during frame selection or frame fitting. They have also shown patience and enthusiasm in answering my basic questions, which is most impressive, since they must hear the same things 50 times a day. The price has also been great. I initially thought I would save money by going online and in fact ordered frames/lenses from a web retailer. However, that proved to be a disaster, and I spent $400 for improperly made glasses. That motivated me to go to Costco and I got a great pair for $250. My friend (who is a glasses nerd) even quizzed the staff about where Costco outsources its lens production, and he was very satisfied that the lenses are made by a quality outfit. Anyway, I'm about to embark on a new era in my life -- my first glasses/frames since 2002. I'm glad I have the Coralville Costco staff to help me on my journey! read more

I maintain a membership at both COSTCO and Sam's Club because neither completely fit my needs. Costco has a smaller selection of name brands but their store brand (Kirkland) is usually of top quality. Bakery items are fresh with their sheet cakes a standout. Meat is good as long as you want a lot of it at once. I don't like the assault by Direct TV reps everytime i go in so, listen up store manager, I avoid that area completely. I avoid the electronics because of the sales people! And so do others. I also don't like my receipt being checked when i leave. Making sure I got everything? No, you're making sure I didn't steal anything. read more
