I'm not sure I can tell you anything about Safeway that you don't already know if you've visited…read moreany of their other locations, but if you're new to the area, the chain, or the country, maybe there are a few things to note. First, things are pricey here. I'm not sure if it's just the extra trucking required to come all the way up and over to Anacortes, or if these are Washington prices, but there were a few moments of sticker shock as I stocked up my cart for the next week and a half of eating. Produce and meat especially, though there are certainly still steals and deals to be had. I've been here twice, and both were over the holidays. It was elbow to elbow shopping and the parking lot was a zoo--if it's a busier time or season, be prepared to hunt for a spot to park. Safeway is one of those "member card" places, where everyone can be a member and you have to swipe your card or punch in your phone number. At some point, we all agreed that instead of just selling us the products at the price they definitely can, that we would let them track us and our shopping habits and harvest our data by swiping a card every time we shop. It's asinine, but that's how they operate. There's a Safeway gas station across the street, and I've filled up there twice before going to the San Juan islands and paying island fuel prices. It's not a bad move, and the ferry is just down the road. All in all, pretty convenient if you're headed to the islands and want to stock up before the prices go up to island sticker shock levels.

Other times it might be my grandparents with my sister and I. More recently, I have come here on a more frequent basis since I started visiting my grandma for overnight solo visits in 2016. We make a point of coming here and seeing if there is anything either of us needs/wants. I have fun these days with trying to help her find presents for family members. Typically, presents and gifts we go to the electronic section for, though not always, as the prices tend to be a better deal than other in-person and online retailers. When I was younger we occasionally enjoyed stops at the food court. Shopping could be a half day experience when we were really into it.

I loved the section dedicated to Whidbey Island swag and local gifts. They had a section that made me laugh out loud, advertising Washington's Rain Festival, from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31st! Since I stayed in a nice hotel with a fantastic view of the water and never saw a sunset- just shades of gray to black, I can completely concur that I experienced this Rain Festival. Besides my souvenir shopping, they essentially have a mall crammed into one building. Electronics, clothing, purses, fragrances, home goods, pet supplies and more! There is even a cafe. This was my 4th NEX (I think) that I have been to and I think it was the nicest.
