    'The Whale'
    K M.

Wow / top notch production of 'The Whale' going on now. Phenomenal talent / I believed almost every word that was uttered throughout the show. Particularly the lead, but all the actors used their physicality to believably and effectively tell the story. I found the scenes between the father and daughter the most powerful / partly because of the writing - but mostly because both actors hit every note. Casting was dead on. So impressed...but not surprised - I've seen great shows here before - but as far as talent goes, I think this was the best.

This is another in a great line of community theaters that I have recently attended shows at. The Costa Mesa Playhouse shares the parking and grounds of the elementary school next door but dont let that take away from the place. This place churns out quality productions and there is not a bad seat in the house. The entire theater itself may only hold close to 100 people but that gives the shows a more intimate feel. I recently attended Assassins which I had discovered through Goldstar and the premise immediately drew me in. Finding the venue was fairly easy although knowing exactly where its located helps as the elementary school is what you will find first. Claiming my ticket was a breeze. Simply walk in and give them your name and they will locate you based off your assigned seating they gave you. The lady quickly found me as a Goldstar ticket purchase and despite the discounted ticket I was pleasantly surprised to see that I was seated in the first row and on an aisle no less. The venue has a small concession stand selling drinks and assorted snacks for a reasonable price. The seating is clearly marked and easy to find. The staff was very courteous and the show quality was strong from start to finish. I will definitely be back.

I am docking points for my negative experience here. First of all, I was in orchestra row B and I asked where I would need to enter (go up the ramp or enter on ground level). I was directed to go up the ramp, which had 3x the line as the ground level, only to eventually find that ground level was closer and had a much shorter line. I had a handheld camera smaller than the size of my iPhone. The security attendant didn't know whether that was permitted. He asked someone else, who also seemed unsure/hesitated/stuttered at first, then he insisted that it was prohibited. I would understand if it's truly prohibited, but my issues with this: 1. It seemed like he was just making up rules 2. Their website says no PROFESSIONAL recording devices, but personal device recording is okay in the lobby (obviously wouldn't do it during the show) 3. I had to go all the way back to my car to put it in there. I read another review that the workers/attendants are rude; for me, this includes security.

We were able to tour the concert hall and were able to see live musician practice sessions. The concert hall lobby, stage, and the overall building is beautiful. The acoustics and architecture are world class. One thing to note about the concert hall is that strollers are not allowed inside. However they do have kind employees that will help check your stroller for you and will provide an identification tag so that you can retrieve the stroller at the designated storage locations. We are looking forward to returning for a future performance.

Classical music is something that I grew up with and still enjoy listening to until now. I can name a lot of my favorite composers from back in early 16, 17, 18 hundreds but I'd rather not. I listen to symphony/classical music with a different ear. It is always relaxing, soothing, and calming. Also, let me not forget to mention that I grew up playing the piano very well. That also has something to do with it. The Renée & Henry Segerstrom Hall is the newest addition to the Segerstrom Center for the Arts campus, opening in 2006. I have been to this place 5 times in my life. Each time that I have gone there has been a beautiful experience, top notch, in every way. Great location with so many dining options within walking distance & the Pacific Symphony are glorious, glamorous and amazing to listen to. This hall is GORGEOUS, BEAUTIFUL, & EXTRAORDINARY! It has 4 levels and no matter where you sit, you can see and hear the performance very clearly. The sound system is FANTASTIC!! I have seen/heard Itzhak Perlman, Scandinavian dance performance, couple of Jazz artists like Berry Perkins Bobby Rush, and few others.. On February 7th, a friend of mine invited me to the event "St.Clair Conducts Beethoven & Don Quixote". Tickets started at $33 and up. Our tickets were $108.00 each. I know, pretty steep, but, totally worth it. We were sitting in the orchestra level row U, seats 10 & 11. I can go on and on and on about this wonderful venue, the architecture of the building, but my fingers are now tired, so I will conclude my review by saying that staff are very professional, helpful, ushers will direct/escort you to your seats, parking is $20 and the rest I am leaving it to your own imagination. Pristine, super clean restrooms. Lights off, and enjoy the program:-)!! I wish this place was close to my city/home.

My daughter has now participated in four (going on five!) productions, and every experience has been nothing short of magical. She is seen, valued, and supported not only as an actress but as a whole person -- and that kind of love and encouragement is priceless. Chelsea Braverman, the owner, is warm, friendly, and incredibly knowledgeable. She truly cares for each of her students and takes the time to build meaningful connections--not only with the kids, but with their parents as well. What makes Braver Players so special is its deeply inclusive environment. Every child is celebrated for exactly who they are, and the result is a cast full of confidence, kindness, and pure joy. The quality of the productions is exceptional -- from the gorgeous costumes and beautifully designed sets to the professional-level acting, singing, and live music. The coaching the kids receive is top-notch and helps them truly shine on stage. What also sets BP apart is the culture among the families. Parents and kids alike are genuinely supportive of one another. There's no drama over roles -- only excitement for the success of the entire production. It's a true team effort, and you can feel that in every performance. I am consistently blown away by the level of talent and the brilliant casting choices -- it's as if each performer was born for their role, which speaks volumes about the vision and care of the directors and producers. I have experienced a few performances here now, and this one was somewhat disappointing. There were racist aspects of the play which were not necessary -- especially the Asian number. It is 2023 now so let's be current with the times. There are host of ways to handle older content in a fresher, sensitive, mature, and respectable way. I encourage the staff to look into responsible ways of handling or modifying content. This approach was certainly done with the Narrator and his content so it can surely be done for other aspects of the show. Looking forward to this feedback being thoughtfully, respectfully and humbly processed and integrated for future productions. Lastly, when the show is not on (during intermission/before/after performance), consider raising the lights. An elderly man fell painfully by the side of the stage. He had trouble seeing, and I overheard his party saying they would be taking him to the hospital.
