The Tamarind drinks here are to die for, best I have ever had. They also have a to go side under a different name. same great food. What I like about this place is that the food is really good, and the dishes are very well served. Their salsa with chips were also good. We ordered 2 fish plates prepared in different style and it was roughly about $18 per plate, and a octopus & shrimp tostada was about $8. This is a hole in a wall, very casual, small lot for parking or u can park on the residential street nearby. Prices vary from $7-$45 per plate depending on what you order. Went during this covid pandemic, and they have a covered tent outside in the parking lot with adequate tables. The service is just okay, no where stellar, but the quality of food make up for it. Mostly a larger range on the menu is for seafood, but they also have some traditional mexican plates plates on the menu as well. Great Mexican food, and the price is fair. I always get menudos, and a tripa taco, which are pretty freaking hard to get in Burbank. BTW, they serve menudos everyday. Also they have a great seafood menu. Ceveche's, shrimp and octupus cocktails, etc. If you dine-in the restaurant, they will hook you up with even more food. Today my family and I placed a big order in which one of the burritos contained what looks like gause or clorox wipe either or we completely lost our appetite. We contacted Maria the manager to let her know and guess what she did nothing, no reimbursement in fact she said "it happens" both of my brothers are chefs and no it doesnt just happen. She was not apologetic in fact she was so rude when I told her that as a manager she should do what's right and guess what she said in Spanish "vete a la chigada madre" which in English translates to go f yourself. Growing up on the eastside of LA, I am no stranger to the usual Mexican-American staples: "Laugh Now, Cry Later" tattoos, Ben Sherman, Doc Martens, shaved eyebrows, brown lipliner, horchata, pasilla chiles, and the dirty yet delicious taco trucks aka roach coaches. But one day, when my friend asked me if I had tried menudo, the only answer I could feebly come up with was "Ricky Martin isn't my type." Quite miffed by my lack of knowledge of this traditional Mexicano fare, I made a resolution to pop my menudo cherry right away. With a jubilant "Ole!," I dragged my buddy's arm to take me to the best menudo place he could think of. An hour later, we arrived at Costa Azul, where a blue and white "Mariscos" sign illuminates the corner of Buena Vista. Walking towards the front counter, colorful photographs of their various specialties made my mouth water. But being on a very special mission, I tore my eyes away from the enticing images of ceviche tostadas, heaps of carnitas, and bountiful burritos to ask the cheerful senora about their soup portions. Unfortunately, my elementary grasp of Spanish failed to understand her reply, so I turned to my friend for a translation. "She said each order is for one person." Although I thought $7 was a bit pricey for one cup, I gave in and ordered one for each of our growling bellies. About 15 minutes later, two Godzilla-sized bowls of steaming menudo arrived. What the heezy? Okay, each bowl was definitely more than enough for two. It then occured to me why these Latin ladies had such big bottoms. Jus' sayin'. A side of dried herbs (oregano and chili flakes) and chopped onions were placed by our bowls, which I was told should be mixed into my broth. Enraptured, I peered into the crimson consomme, and began poking at the soft honeycomb pieces floating on top. Mmm...tripe (also known as stomach lining for Los Gringos). I also made a mental note to avoid the disconcerting layer of oil accumulated from the fatty pieces of pigs' feet and garbanzo beans at the bottom of my bowl. I don't know what I was expecting when I swallowed my very first spoonful. A delightful dance in my mouth, maybe? A shower of glimmering confetti dropping from the ceilings with a loud "Hurrah!"? A new way of life? Alas, none of these pleasurable events ensued. Not even close. Instead, I realized I was merely consuming a very bland and oily soup. Although the chewy pieces of tripe made it a little more interesting, I couldn't help but to feel disappointed. I watched my friend slurp away and felt a little jealous of the happy memories it seemed to bring him, the way a bowl of chicken pho would have brought me. In a way, I could see how one could find some comfort in its warmth and simplicity, but I had obviously overhyped my expectations of this humble meal. "Pay no attention to the heels on the floor." he said when I got into the paid for truck. In all honesty I didn't know what to expect -- but I was taken aback at the fact that there was indeed stylish pumps on the floor. He then pointed out the case of tecate in the back seat as well as a bottle of grey goose and a purse with an extra pair of heels. Not that we needed any of this for the trip -- which at this point we didn't even know where we were going, but hey, when you're locked into a serious odd evening with a stick figure from riverside, the tendency is to push it as far as you can. The idea was simple -- after spending the last 5 hours drinking at a cowboy saloon and then at a craft beer specialty, it was time for Cheaptimes to get some grub. Something that reminded him of home. A taco stand or something of the like. After driving around Burbank for a couple of minutes, the large MARISCO'S written on the side of a building just called on us. This is how we ended up in The Costa Azul. Specifically with only a good 10-15 minutes before they turned off the OPEN sign. The first sign of trouble came when the already irate waitress asked if we were ordering food and my partner's reply was simply "maybe, but probably just 4-5 round of beers". Tensions also began to build when the false sense of hope appeared with the amount of empty bottles they had on the wall wasn't really representing what they actually offered. A side note about the area. North Burbank is where you go when you want to do your taxes and get a pound of chorizo for your next BBQ. No, seriously. They have butcher shops that also do your taxes. I'm not sure how good they'll marinate your meat, but man oh man, those tax deductions they'll find will be worth every pound of asada. Back to Costa Azul. After round two of dos XX's, a fairly frustrated waitress came back out and pushed on the fact that the kitchen was about to close. He went with the steak plate. I went with a simple tostada de pulpo. I guess I later caught on to why I went with that when Cheapster's asked me why I went with that. By this point I conditioned myself to not go for the shellfish options at seafood establishment. I didn't want to have crustacean on the lips in the event of a potential kiss of death to my lips. But then that was for a different life time. It was alright. Then again, I had been drinking for the past 8 hours at a rate of a good solid two to three beers an hour. Some as strong as 9%. So this simple offering of a boiled and chopped cephalopod on top of a deep fried and hardened tortilla hit that spot in a good way. Even if the tension between the I.E. resident and the exhausted worker here built to levels only seen on the streets of Downtown L.A. and a certain ass grabbing. I had to excuse myself at least twice in fear that I was going to get some hot sauce thrown in my face. It was bad enough they turned off the Lakers game from the television -- as to not encourage staying for longer than needed. On the way to the bathroom I accidentally opened the door to the utility closet. One does not associate limes with a bathroom storage closet, but sure enough there was a box full of them. I do subscribe to the notion of if life gives you lemons, make lemoncello. But since life just had me come face to face with storage utility limes, I wasn't going to squander this moment. I grabbed a couple and put them in my pocket. Who am I to pass up this chance? Besides, if the shit got thick between my "more-handsome-than-ten-celebrities" buddy and the waitress, I wanted some sort of weapon. A good $30 worth of drinks and finished food later, we were ready to bounce. Now I won't say the service was terrible. It was perfectly acceptable that she didn't want to stick around after her shift for late coming walk-in's. There was something to be said about the whole ways my buddy pushed and tested those waitressing skills. Over all, it wasn't a bad place to end the night. It got the job done and I seriously lost count at how many beers we have had. I'm sure a lot of preparation was being made for the whole Mother day meal festivities as every chair seemed to be covered in some white cloth. Worth coming to again? Well.. I think it's safe to assume that they'll have a "lime thief" wanted poster up, so I may have to lay low from coming back there anytime soon. Rather than writing about Costa Azul, where I have not had the opportunity to dine, I am writing about the great taqueria that resides in the same building, Pueblo Nuevo. Tacos, burritos, quesadillas, chimichangas... Carnitas, carne asada, al pastor, chorizo, chicken... Fish tacos to die for! Unfortunately, they do not have chicharones (even though it's on their menu). My first couple of visits, I asked if they did. But, they discontinued serving it. The menu goes on and on. The menu is big, and a little on the expensive side for Mexican food, but this is more sit-down Mexican than Taqueria Mexican, and you get some serious value for your cash - entrees are BIG. Nachos? HolyShit enormous. Seriously, the nachos plate (with carne asada) had more food on it than any of our entrees. And it was more like, "would you like some chips with your steak" than the other way around. Crazy! Damn tasty too. I had the Mole (Chicken) Enchiladas, and it was quite good. If you've read my other reviews, you've noticed I'm picky about my Mole. This, while certainly not the best I've ever had, was definitely better than average. Rich, tasty, hearty, with a subtle kick. Very enjoyable. Chicken was tender and juicy too. The refried beans are unusually light in color compared to what I'm used to - not sure how or why (different kind?
