The downside is that not all baristas mix it, so it is a surprise when tasting it without taking the lid off. Something I've been really into lately is trying out different international coffee styles. This all started for me when I was introduced to Vietnamese coffee and after years of being a barista and knowing my way around an espresso machine and a more English/European way of viewing the drink, my mind was blown by how different cultures prepare such a classic drink. All of that being said, I'd never had Cuban coffee before so I was thrilled to have a chance to try it out here. I ordered a cafecito as I wanted something authentic and it was divine. Even though the menu is small it was difficult to make a decision about coffee and food. I ended up getting a cafe con leche - creamy and just the perfect amount of sweetness. It came out hot(temp) but not where it was scalding hot but just right. I had to force myself to savor it and drink it slow. Then I tried the plantains. Ooo so good. Crunchy and salty better than a potato chip. I got to try a sample of the guava cookies. Oh my. Another slam dunk. Everything was yummy. I even took home a jar of coffee. @cortadito_kc is a MUST!! Yes this is same sandwich, but you need to see all the angles because it SOOOOO DAMN GREAT. You need to get the chicken croquettes, it is pate in a cubano . Didn't know I needed it, but now every cubano sandwich is going to have to live up to this one. Also ask for a side of the chipotle sauce. It is just a little heat and smoke that adds to the fatty pork, ham, and cheese. Everything is great. Don't pass on the coffee or the flan. I honestly can report this is the best flan in KC. I was so excited to try this Cuban restaurant in KCK. I saw it had 5 stars on Yelp and I LOVE a good Cuban sandwich. This one was EXCELLENT. It's huge so be ready! The restaurant is small but very clean and the staff was so friendly. Their plantain chips are homemade and they were thinner than some, I liked them a lot. . The sandwich bread was nice and crispy and the ham and pork and cheese was so tasty! .My only change for next time will be to ask for a little less mustard, but that's personal preference. I went here because it had five-star reviews, and I wanted a good cup of coffee and some breakfast. They were supposed to open at 7:00 a.m., and I showed up right at 7:00, only to be told they would open in another 5 to 10 minutes. Once they finally opened, I went inside and ordered two large lattes with no sweetener and two breakfast sandwiches with no mayo. Pretty simple, right? It probably would have been easier if the obnoxious Cuban music hadn't made me feel like I was walking into a nightclub at 7:00 in the morning. When I got back in the car, started down the interstate, and took a sip of my coffee--which was a small, not the large I ordered--I realized it had what seemed like half a cup of sweetener in it. It was the sweetest coffee I've ever tasted. To make matters worse, both sandwiches had mayo on them. The only reason I'm giving them two stars is because the lady who took my order, although incompetent, was at least somewhat kind. The sandwich would have been decent if they had simply made it the way I ordered it. Not to mention, my two coffees and two sandwiches came out to about $33. Judging by the part of town I was in, not a single person walking down that sidewalk could have afforded to walk in and pay Vail, Colorado, prices for two small coffees and two mediocre sandwiches. After reading the other reviews, it seems this place gets five stars because the staff is friendly and the atmosphere is a nice place to sit. Coffee shops that serve food should be reviewed based on the quality of their coffee, their food, the competence of their employees, and whether they can get a simple order right--not just on whether the staff is nice. This Cuban cafe is such a cool little gem. It's very unassuming from the outside, but once you step in you are transported. All the employees were so helpful and knowledgeable when we weren't sure what to order, and I took their suggestion in getting the Cafe Bonbon. The TV was actually a bit of a distraction from the beautiful and vibrant wall murals located throughout space depicting Cuban culture. Following soon was my freshly grilled traditional Cuban sandwich with the obligatory mustard, pickles, Swiss cheese, ham and plenty of the best pulled pork ever. Wow! What a 10/10 experience. I had a short break from professional development and wanted to have a coffee and sandwich. The Cuban coffee shop around the corner provided the perfect sanctuary for just that. LOVE having a new coffee shop that is incredibly close to work! This shop had been on my radar, but it wasn't until a coworker mentioned it opening that I realized it was both open and close to work! The staff working were so kind and friendly. The gal working walked me through the menu of food and pastries as well as coffee offerings. This was helpful in making a choice about what to order. Ultimately I ended up with a cafe con leche - a sweetened latte-type drink (but not overly sweet) and an order of the cubana tostada. This was a toasted cuban bread with a little butter and salt. I was so excited to hear that this cafe would be opening just four blocks from my home. Well...... Cortadito is an absolute hit! The Cuban coffee is excellent. Strong and perfectly sweetened. But if you like yours a little different, Cortadito will make it the way you like it. Their coffee is sourced from a roaster in Key West and is top quality. It tastes and smells exactly like a perfect Cuban coffee should. Grab a coffee and Cuban toast (tostada) and you have a typical Cuban breakfast. All food items are made in-house by the owner's mom. (Can't get better than that!) The croquetas, yuca/papa rellenos, pastelitos (among others) are all delicious, as are the sandwiches. I can't pick a favorite, but The Cubano is always a standout. The building is super clean and beautifully decorated. The interior walls are covered with brightly painted murals depicting Cuba, and the struggle to achieve political and personal freedoms from the repressive government. Hardships that family members of the owners personally faced in Cuba. There is seating at the front of the cafe, along with dominoes and other Cuban themed board games. The heated and cooled double garage in the back has been turned into overflow seating and is comparably decorated and comfortable. Now onto the best thing about Cortadito. The amazing owners and the extremely well-trained, competent, and super-friendly staff. Such wonderful and friendly people as you could ever hope to meet. Highly recommend Cortadito Cafe! read more
