Got off to a slow start. I sat at the bar as I was by myself in town for a bike race the next day. The bartender was disinterested and inattentive to the point where I looked down to make sure I was still sitting there. She had her back to the customers for a long time. When I finally got her attention things improved. I ordered the Farmhouse salad which was very good though hardly a bargain at 10 bucks. The Scallops w Shrimp Risotto was quite good and fairly priced at 20. The atmosphere was a bit loud but tolerable. The beer list was very good. It's so rare (ha! Burger pun.) That we get a bad dish here. The wait staff is always professional and nice. The food is high quality American pub fare. The Mac and cheese is always devine. The burgers are perfect, the other dishes... Wait! There are other dishes? My only complaint is the onion soup is too sweet. French onion should be beefy and savory, baked under a broiler with crusty cheese. The excuse of a "sweet onion" soup that is easier to assemble is horrible. A good french onion soup says worlds about the beef used and the talent of the soup maker. The chowder is always great ;) read more

Barre is truly up and coming as a place to be. Well of course I just bought a house here so that is proof. This was our first time here. Being someone with 10 years of restaurant experience this place was great. The sound acoustics. It was very loud inside but where we sat when you spoke your words faded quickly. Could be the nice hammered tin ceilings. Our table had the calamari, poutine and roasted beet salads to start. We shepherds pie, crab cakes, salmon, a burger, a flatbread, sea scallops and my daughter had the kids mac and cheese. The flatbread was so-so and my daughter found the mac and cheese a bit too fragrant. Being from NYC and the fact our friends founded American Flatbread in Waitsfield they had a high standard to meet so they get a pass. But everything else was top notch. Including the sides with the food. Whoever greeted us (manager or owner) was great. Table was ready for us with a high chair for my daughter (we had 6 people). BEER LIST WAS AWESOME! Lot's of craft beer choices from Vermont and elsewhere. They a fave of mine the Founder's Breakfast Stout and a solid wine list. We did not try dessert this time. My in laws and my mother who won't hold back if they aren't satisfied loved the place. We will be back! read more

As a long time member of the hospitality community I feel it is always important to reward our associates that do their part and give our industry a good name. I recently found myself in Barre VT on a Sunday afternoon and in need of a spot to do a little business and have a beer. I happened to stop into the Cornerstone Pub and Kitchen in downtown Barre VT. Upon entering the building it became obvious to me that they appeared to not yet be open for service. Hope the young lady who was busy setting up the dining room greated me and I asked her if they were open, she was very kind and said we are not open for food at this time but if you would like to you can stay for a drink. I happily agreed to stay and have a beer and told her I was greatful for her hospitality and only needed a quite spot to do some work. As I sat by myself doing my work at the corner of the bar their chef Todd made an appearece to check on the score of the game. He also was very accomodating even to the point of offering to make me a burger or something if I was hungry. Now my point of all this is that after many years of being in the business and watching people be turned away by the statement " I'm sorry we are not open yet " both of these people should be appreciated for their Hospitality ! Also whoever the owners are you should also be commended for creating a culture that promotes this sort of ownership and pride in your operation. I have a son in college just up the road and a cousin living in Barre and promise that because of this recent interaction I will visit no other establishment in Barre whenever I am in town. Made the mistake of going on a Tuesday only to find that they only serving Taco Tuesday foods, not sure they still do that. Not only was the food simply awful and tasteless but the Server/Bartender was rude basically threw the menu at us. Stopped in for lunch and had the special Black bean burger stuffed with goat cheese with a side salad. So I really loved there large selection of local beers on tap. The burger had great flavor but it fell apart due to the cheese in the black bean patty. The salad was fresh and also was great. The awesome thing is the bar tender noticed the burger falling apart and took a few dollars off my bill without me even saying anything. WOW!!! No that is a great bartender! The swordfish tacos were my favorite and the lobster Mac n cheese was good to everyone else on my party (turns out I'm just not a fan of lobster and cheese together) but just the lobster bits were amazing! 5 stars with a caveat. Outstanding food. But I thought the bartender may have served me a different beer than what I ordered. I was abruptly told the bartender said he served you the correct beer. Now when you abruptly dismiss someone who thinks he knows his beers - well dems fighting words. I would have appreciated the bartender to clarify perhaps by showing me the two beers side by side or even offering a small sample of each of the two beers. We made a trip to Barre from Killington for an appointment and found the Cornerstone Pub & Kitchen for lunch on Yelp. The menu presented many attractive choices for appetizers, soups, salads, sandwiches, and entrees. I chose the smoked beef brisket reuben sandwich with hand cut fries. The sandwich was enormous and delicious. I took half of it home for another meal. My husband had fish and chips which was also huge and he said it was delicious. Both the best and wine menu were extensive. We would definitely return next time we find ourselves in Barre. We just wish it was closer to home! read more

Customer service was not at the top of the list last evening when I brought my parents to the Cornerstone for dinner. I haven't seen my parents in six months and was looking forward to a nice meal and conversation but instead my wife was bitten buy dozens of ants and there were thousands under the table. We asked to be moved to one of the other vacant tables but were told they were reserved! The option they gave was to move my 70 year old parents to pub tables but with my Mother's poor health that was not an option so we had to leave and find a new place for dinner. Needless to say I am not a happy customer and sadden to see such poor quality handling of a situation. I work in the customer service field (healthcare) and I can tell you the customer is the number one reason you have a lively hood and each and every one of your customers have to be treated with respect and care. That was not shown and I will not be a customer of the Cornerstone in the future. Things happen and situations come up but it's how we deal with those situations that customers judge us upon. This lovely restaurant is a welcome addition to little Barre, where some of the restaurants have just been around too long and aren't that good. I really enjoyed my lunch, and the others who dined with me said their lunches were excellent also. Burgers, sandwiches and fish tacos all satisfied. Driving across Vermont we stopped in Barre to have lunch and cool off. We found Cornerstone on Yelp and it was absolutely perfect! Menu is so creative and the beer selection had something for everyone. Buffalo Mac, Avocado BLT and Poke Bowl were awesome. Service was great. I've never had a disappointing experience at Cornerstone. Their menu is great, different from most of the other restaurants in the area, they have a great wine, beer, and cocktail menu, the service is fast, friendly, and accommodating. This was the first time I have ever not thoroughly enjoyed my food or had so, so service so I was surprised. Not the norm. I had the turkey burger and it was super oily and over spiced and must have had a high fat content because it had a very strong flavor. My fries which I've always stolen off my boyfriends plate because they look so good were old and not fresh. Kind of like there were sitting around for a while and were thrown into the fryer for a second before plating them. Service was kind of meh, but is usually outstanding. We had to wait a long time for a refill on our sodas and then a really long time for the check. Like I said, not the norm so it was a bummer to be disappointed. read more

Bad Points: Bartenders and waitstaff need a little help. Menu needs to be expanded to include non culinary style food. Menu items a bit pricy for what you get.
