We've very glad we spent the additional money for the flue inspection of our fireplace as he uncovered plenty of issues inside the fireplace flue that we never would have caught. Maybe the below reviews have assisted the company in bettering their customer service, but I worked with Michael this morning on my home inspection for a home I am purchasing, and it went perfectly. Michael was great at explaining everything to me - and stating his recommendations. Home inspectors can not make assumptions about what might be causing an issue - but they are there are let you know when needs further investigation. And he did just that! We are purchasing an older home, which is what he specializing in, and he was great at raising the proper red flags when necessary. Michael J. did our home inspection for our townhome 3 years ago and again recently for our pending purchase of a 3000 sq ft single family home. If I remember correctly, he spent about 1.5 hours on our townhome and he spent about 4 hours on our current purchase. He was very thorough, paused to explain further, and gave us plenty of opportunities to ask questions. He also insisted on contacting him later if we thought of anything else. He was very patient with us and made us feel comfortable with the level of attention he provided, both with us and the home. Am I a little nervous about our purchase now? Admittedly yes, but I do feel better about not running into any surprises later. Michael did his job well by arming us with a detailed report (within a day) and also addressed concerns by helping us prioritize what needs to be fixed, what's easier to fix, and what is perfectly normal. I'm hoping this is the house we grow old in, but in case it's not, I wouldn't hesitate to have Michael inspect our next one! read more

Mike Sr. was absolutely thorough and professional, no messing around! Initially used Cornerstone on a house that we ended up not following through on because the seller had made repairs without the proper permits, and in some cases, left significant structural damage unrepaired. We knew after that experience that Cornerstone was the company we had to use for our next home inspection. Do not use Cornerstone. So disappointing. Michael Jr came to the house. At the end of the inspection, he informed me and the real estate agent that he can't do an electrical inspection because there is a lawnmower and a few other items in the way of the electrical panel. Really? My agent and I moved the items out of the way for him so he would not break a nail. He reluctantly completed in the inspection. Very lazy. The report was supposed to be emailed to me that night. No report that night. No report the next day. No report the day after that. After my agent followed up, we received the report but the items of greatest issue like 3 roof leaks didn't really make it into the report. That's kind of big deal when you buy a home. The report was clearly a boiler plate template and the issues identified were not highlighted. When I called Michael Sr to point out that the roof leaks that his son identified were not in the roof section, he didn't seem to care really. Even when he revised the report, there was no attention to detail. The attic was an "addict". Despite asking him to correct it, the report still reads "addict". The report was unsatisfactory at best. I would never recommend Cornerstone to anyone. read more

Stay away. This gentleman talks a good game. But when he shows up, all he does is try to cover his butt. He is very careful to ONLY give his opinion on things that the New Jersey state law tells him he must do and is very quick to quote what he will not do. But he is useless and his inspection is useless in knowing what problems exist in a house. I purchased recently purchased a house that Cornerstone inspected. After moving in, I had problems with the heating system. I had the heating service come, just to tell me that the system was (1) the original system that was installed with the house and was already past its expected service life and (2) it was severely undersized for area it was heating because it had taken on heating the basement after it was finished without an upgrade. I complained to Cornerstone that his inspection did not make any mention of this being the original heating system, and, in fact, the area on his inspection form where there is a box for the estimated age of the system is left blank. He then trotted out his NJ Laws page and quotes the law and that he is not responsible for telling us how much time the heating system had left. I say, fine, then what good is the inspection?? Estimated cost to replace the heating system is over $15,000. I then found out that the Sub-Zero refrigerator that he checked off as working was similarly almost 20 years old (not something we knew at the time). Replacement cost? $12,000. Then, today we found out that the water conditioning system (that he checked off as "Present" and "Plumbing Hooked up" was not tested. What good is that? We find out it was never working, that the previous owner had been told it was not working, and it would be $3000 to replace. So please tell me what good is his inspection if these expensive items are not reviewed, tested and covered? He sends the law with EVERYTHING and of course, the law is in mumbo-jumbo so you cannot tell what he will do or won't do. But basically, I paid him to give me a false sense of security that I would not be walking into a number of surprises with the house. The inspection is not worth the paper it is printed on - and since it was sent electronically, that is not much!! Stay away and find another inspector....... read more

Cornerstone Home Inspections (Mike) did a fantastic job with my home inspection. It was easy to schedule the inspection. The inspection was thorough, and helpful for me to see the ins and outs of the home. Mike and my realtor arrived a little before I did. He began the exterior inspection, once I arrived we went over the outside of the home then we began inside. Mike did a detailed inspection of each room. Mike was even able to identify the age of the A/C and furnace by the serial number which coincidentally was about double what the sellers claimed. Mike identified and documented a massive fire hazard which I am certain not all inspectors would have caught. A detailed report, which included clear pictures was e-mailed to me within hours of the completion of the inspection. Not much more you could ask for. I would absolutely use them again and recommend them to anyone. read more

I'm a first time buyer, so wasn't really sure (outside of researching online) what was entailed in a home inspection. A friend recommended Cornerstone and I was very happy I contracted them. Mike, one of the owner's, was so incredibly thorough, and explained what he was doing and what he was looking for whenever I asked. What do I mean by thorough? He opened every single window in the house - except the one painted shut, which was good to know! I never would have known that sometimes if a window looks foggy, it's not necessarily dirty -- it's because there is condensation between the double panes of glass showing that the seal is not longer good. Fortunately, he did not find any major problems, but I now have an exhaustive list of "things to consider" for future improvement projects (yea?!?). I also greatly appreciated that the radon and termite inspection was included in the price upfront - I've heard of other firms (that online research I did!) referring to these as additional items AFTER the price has been given. read more

We were looking at purchasing an older home (built 1885) and wanted to make sure we Hired someone with the expertise needed. Mike and his father along with Jason were extremely thorough and professional during the entire process. They provided us with a comprehensive report that gave great detail on the current condition of the home and any potential issues that might arise. Sadly, we used this company for a home inspection. I'd like to echo the other review in that the gentlemen (owner) talks a whole lot about what he can't talk about. When I arrived, 10 minutes after he had started the inspection, he was arguing with my wife who was simply trying to ask questions. While he was completing an inspection on the inside of the house, his son was performing an oil tank sweep we paid them to perform. Turns out he "found something" in the ground. So he pulled us aside to show us. He showed us how the detector located a metal object in the ground, but he couldn't determine the actual size or what it was. He could tell us the object ran 4-5' in a straight line but not how wide it was (because of the house and a bush). And yet, we found out when we later received and reviewed the report, that he marked on the report that the object was 4' by 5' causing a TON of controversy over what exactly was in the ground. So they wrote something down that they couldn't even validate. And it's now led to delays in proceeding because no one can validate what it is. He also used a 3' rod to probe the ground to see if it was an oil tank. But he touched nothing. He told us sometimes a tank could be 5' deep. So naturally we asked him to use a 5' rod to probe. He told us he didn't have one. It wouldn't "fit in his car." So his job is to search for oil tanks and he doesn't have the right tools?? As part of the inspection, he went into the attic space over the garage. A pull-down ladder was clearly in need of repair, but otherwise the attic passed his inspection. Only for us to find out weeks later when someone came out to repair the ladder (as we requested), that the entire attic was "structurally unsound" and would either require massive repair or need to be closed off entirely. And the home inspector didn't catch this?!? Just what did we pay him for?? To check boxes on a report that didn't really provide ANY direction as to what to fix, didn't catch what were clearly huge issues, and caused controversy because they couldn't even do the job to properly identify or check for what was in the ground. A complete waste of time and money that caused us to pay for additional inspectors, delays with the sellers, time wasted trying to get estimates, and huge structural issues that may submarine the whole deal in the end. We were first time home buyers and this was the third house we were under contract to buy (hate bidding wars & almost swore off NJ) and weren't very happy with the home inspectors being referred by our agent. Our real estate referred us to Cornerstone and Micheal turned out to be a great home inspector. He was very detailed, walked us through the entire process. He pointed out major flaws (evidence of water leak and termite damage) that weren't disclosed in the seller's disclosure, and identified various minor flaws that could be problematic later on.
