While I'm very sensitive to local businesses during these times my experience with Corn Maiden was extremely bad even taking this into consideration. I ordered over the Internet an order for delivery in Los Angeles in their backyard. A week after ordering with no results I called and inquired. They reflected it would be sent out the next day which never took place. I called three more times over the ensuing 10 days, always speaking with a sympathetic person who promised to send out the original order which was never received. A total of four calls over 15 days with nothing received. Enough, never again. My account of course was charged within 5 minutes after original order. Never offered to refund. They have lost, forever, a good customer ( reference order 1939). read more

Way back in 1989 I was working in the Culver City area near the intersections of Overland and Washington. About 3 or 4 blocks east of there was a brightly painted, somewhat garish adorned corner shop. Once past the bright orange and very heavy security door, you found a very small retail space that had all kinds of hot sauce and tex-mex products on the shelves. Besides the hot sauce chatch-keys, they also sold tamales of many different types along with some tremendous sauces to serve with them. Sometime in the mid to late 1990's that little shop expanded about 5 fold in size and moved near the intersection of Manchester and La Tijara in Westchester. Corn Maiden Tamale stands were now popping up at various Farmer's Markets in the WLA and SFV. Things have taken off. They were starting to focus on tamales only catering direct to the consumer. Now it's the late 2k's and Corn Maiden finds itself once again in an expansion position, moving the entire manufacturing operation and now corporate HQ to an industrial area of Harbor City with even more space to create their wonderful tamales and sauces. Now onto the actual review; for years now I've been serving their tamales at our New Years Day dinner. We get 3 dozen; 1 doz grilled chicken w/green chile and cilantro, 1 doz beef roasted garlic and CA sauce, and 1 doz black beans, red jalapeno and mozz cheese. To go on top we buy the tomatillo, tomato chipotle and orange achiote sauces. Now I'm sure that someone out there will say "they will never be as good as my parents or grandparents make" and that's an OK thing to say. But what you have to realize is that these are NOT your typical heavy pork meat in red sauce tamales many were so fond of growing up on. What makes these tamales stand out from others is that they are good sized without being heavy. The masa is almost fluffy in texture, but still firm enough to hold the goodness inside. We almost never have leftover tamales from Corn Maiden, they somehow just keep being absorbed by our guests and family. The list of available tamale types and sauces is good sized and are readily reviewable on their website (noted above). Most of the tamales listed can be purchased in a small (2.5 oz) and large size (5.5 oz) sizes. Their sauces can be purchased in 8 and 16 oz containers. The tamales themselves are prepared with various combinations of chicken, pork, beef, seafood, veggies and even some vegan selections without meat or even lard in the masa. They have a good selection of sweet desert tamales and some kids selections. While they do accept orders on their website for home shipped delivery, you can walk into their HQ in Harbor City and order at their front desk. All of the tamales are sold and shipped frozen. My experience is that if you freeze a tamale before seaming it, it will not fall apart after cooking, and that's a good thing. If you do order at their HQ, you have to remember this is a business office, not a retail restaurant or storefront. That means you will be placing your order with the receptionist who will take your order to the manufacturing area where someone else will fill your order and deliver it to the lobby for you to take. Don't plan on eating it there, it just cannot be done. Oh yeah, you can also still get a limited selection of their tamales at most local Farmer's Markets in the SoCal area. You can buy by the dozen frozen, or buy one or two cooked and sauced for lunch to eat on the run. I tend to always see their stands at the Encino and Calabasas outdoor markets. Their website says theyare available at a whole bunch of supermarkets in SoCal. I, however, have never seen them there. Maybe they sell out before I get there :-) .. Prices for tamales are by the dozen; $19.50 to $24.00 for the 2.5 oz size, $25.20 to $31.50 for the 5.5 oz sizes. Sauces range from $2.25 to $3.50 for the 8 oz size, $3.50 to $6.00 for the 16 oz size. The tamales are a little pricey and you have to order by the dozen, but the upscale ingredients, overall quality and freshness of the products make it worth it. On a per person basis, the experience still falls into the inexpensive category here on Yelp. If they charged a bit less per dozen, like even a couple bucks, I would provide a 5 star rating for total snaps up value! read more

This place is very dirty. Many of the employees who work here do not wash their hands well. They simply rinse their hands without soap. The site manager forces employees to use spoiled meat and chicken. They don't wash dishes well, they use them when they're still dirty. This place is a chain of contamination because they even use rusty metal frets. They sell their products in markets like Vallarta and Northgate. read more

Do not order online from this company! I ordered tamale gifts to be sent to friends. They billed me and did not send product and did not notify me. They did not respond to any phone or email queries. When I finally reached them by phone they refused to give a credit and required me to go through my credit card co. to dispute the charges. Extremely poor customer service! read more

Had a couple of tamales at the South Pasadena Farmer's Market. The goat cheese tamales had very little cheese and the pork tamales were lacking in pork. The tamales were almost all masa and bland masa at that. The salsa poured on top was okay. It was all missing flavor. Tamales should stand on the masa alone. I try to be fair as it is hard. My mom made the best Tucson style tamales and everyone who had them, said they were the best ever, everyone! We all walked away feeling full but not remembering ever tasting anything. I've had their tamales from back in the day when they were in Culver City and absolutely loved them! Recently, (December 27, 2016) I wanted to make an online order but their website wasn't safe to shop from, my Mac said it was compromised-not a good start for e commerce! So I called my order and was told it would be taken cared of. I was helped by a very nice lady who was also the same person who answered the phone. When I asked for the confirmation details to be emailed to me and she said she would. I called back the next day again asking for the details of the order and shipment. 3 days later I still hadn't received the email-the tamales had been sent and delivered but I still did not have my emailed receipt! Finally, after another phone call that email was sent. Much as I love their tamales, I hesitate recommending ordering from them as they don't seem to have the needed staff to get things done in a timely manner. Best to get them from the farmers markets! I used to buy Corn Maiden tamales by the dozen at the Hollywood farmer's market and their old storefront in Culver City when I lived in L.A. I recently moved back and was looking forward to satisfying my craving for their green corn tamales, but alas Corn Maiden doesn't seem to go to the Hollywood market anymore. Their current location in Harbor City is a trek for me, but good to know they can be picked up there as the shipping is a bit pricey (to be expected with heavy pershables, but I'd rather avoid if I can.) I've tried Corn Maiden's classic fillings and some of their more unique ones, but I always go back to their sweet Green Corn tamales. I've eaten a lot of tamales, but I haven't found anything like these anywhere else. They taste like a spoon bread, but lighter and with a fresh corn flavor. The golden masa is fluffy and moist, with whole corn kernels throughout. Their sweetness tastes like it comes from fresh corn rather than sugar, and there are no raisins, pineapple, or spices to interfere. They're classified as dessert tamales, but I love them with the smokey hot New Mexico Chile or the tart Tomatillo sauces. Most of their other tamales use the more traditional white masa (but no lard.). They are good, though I find some of them to be on the dry side (they use chicken breast and lean cuts of meat), and more subtle flavors can get lost in the masa. But everything tastes very fresh, and the sauces add a lot of flavor. read more

I found Corn Maiden at South Pasadena's Thursday night Farmer's Market. I've tried about three now and sweet corn w/ BBQ chicken and green corn with sweet corn are the best! I absolutely love the slight sweetness and the subtle green salsa. The blue corn is a bit too grainy and flavorless for me. It needed a lot of green salsa to flavor the blue corn. I buy tamales from Corn Maiden almost on a weekly basis at the farmer's market in Torrance on Saturday's. I do not eat meat, so I chose the vegetarian or vegan tamales and they are great. Try the medium salsa, very good with a little kick. read more

I REALLLLLLLLY miss the turkey cranberry tamales!!!!!!! We skipped the traditional sauces and went with our own or canned turkey gravy. It was like Thanksgiving Dinner in one plate. They still list them on the website but so far have been unable to bring them back. read more
