A community garden also stands across the street from the playground. The Peace and Plenty is an all-ages park with events and activities for local kids, families and adults in the Elmwood area. I have been there many times, since it's a block away from the Rhode Island Free Clinic where I volunteer. So I have taken breaks and strolls around this park. It nice to see the children using the playground and people working in the community garden. Nice and peaceful, it's great for kids that have a place to play safely.

It's a nice break from the busy life around Providence, the greenery is calming and refreshing. The land was obtained by the Parks Department in the mid 1990's from a private developer thanks to a major grant from the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management. The entrance to the Park is from Niantic Avenue or Molter Street.

Deerfield is a beautiful town park with so many memorials and things to do. I enjoy the walking…read morepaths - there are paved paths around the playgrounds, the Senior Center, and by the memorials, and I especially like the wooded cross country paths. For the kids, there are two playgrounds - one for toddlers and one for older kids. It's really nice that the toddler playground is fenced to protect the children from cars. There is also a splash pad during the summer and children really seem to love this new addition to the park. For sports fans, there are soccer fields, tennis courts, a baseball field and a basketball court. Recently a disc golf course was added as well. The park is really pretty in the spring with numerous flowering trees, and it is well maintained. There are bathrooms, plenty of parking areas, a snack bar that is often open during sporting events, and the Smithfield Senior Center is in Deerfield Park as well. The memorials at Deerfield are beautiful and are definitely worth a stop while visiting the park. The Veteran's memorial is lovely and there is a very touching memorial to Smithfield young people who have passed on. Lots of benches to relax on, a gazebo, and many shaded places. There's also a small sledding hill for young children, and a larger hill for those who are more adventurous. Deerfield is also used for summer outdoor concerts, food truck nights and the Smithfield 4th of July fireworks. Love this park!

Situated between lovely old residential homes and the grounds of Hope High School, this space has much to offer. The typical jungle gym activities, sandbox, and traverse-the-netting areas are all done very nicely. Add to that a legitimate climbing and gymnastics ring area, and you have something a cut above. Add to THAT a lovely community garden area, and you begin to get the picture of Brown Street Park. This spot transcends "so nice I want to keep it to myself" status into "this Providence jewel is so good, the word needs to be spread." Please enjoy!

Great little Urban Park behind Hope High School. It has a cozy and intimate feel. Whenever I…read morevisit the park, I see people jogging, working out, running, playing games, kids on slides and swings. It does not have a lot of shade, but it has a lot of fun things for kids and grown ups to keep busy. I make it part of my routine walk along the East Side since it is well maintained, clean and safe. There's a dog park, covered pavilion and various picnic sites that can be rented, plus tennis and pickle ball courts. There's also frisbee golf, multiple baseball fields, a walking path along the 10 mile river, plus a playground. There are many places to take photos; Marconi garden with gazebo, a picturesque pond with bandstand, and an English garden (called friendship garden), plus countless places with lush grasses and trees. In the summer they offer family entertainment with various performers and music. They also offer a summer camp for kids as well as various exercise and dance classes for adults. All this information can be found on their website. The hidden gem of this park is its winter wonderland celebration where the community comes together to decorate 650+ Christmas trees along with displays and lights, it's absolutely magical. The park is clean and well maintained and is constantly undergoing updates and improvements. The one down side is there's only 1 small basketball court even though there is space to expand this area.

The Slater Park Looff Carousel is a historic carousel that was completed in 1895. It was built by…read moreDanish immigrant Charles I. D. Looff. He was born as Carl Jürgen Detlef Looff in Bad Bramstedt, Holstein (now Germany) in 1852. After immigrating to the United States in 1870 at the age of 18, Looff settled in Greenpoint, Brooklyn and found work as a carver for a furniture factory. He began a hobby of taking home leftover wood scraps from the factory and carving them into carousel animals. He created his first carousel in 1876 and it became Coney Island's first carousel and amusement ride. Looff soon opened his own carousel factory in Brooklyn and continued to build more of the rides. In 1886, Looff was commissioned to build a carousel for Crescent Park (known as "the Coney Island of the East") in Rhode Island. In 1895, he moved his family there and established a new headquarters. He built a second, larger and more elaborate carousel for the amusement park. He also built an adjoining workshop and showroom for prospective buyers. Looff relocated to California in 1910 so he could build carousels for amusement parks on the West Coast. He passed away in 1918 after building close to 50 carousels. Looff is regarded as one of the most important and influential carousel builders of all time. The Slater Park Carousel was originally built for a carnival called Lee Funland in upstate New York. It was moved to Slater Park in 1910 where it still stands today. It is one of only six historic carousels in the United States which still resides in its original building. The carousel is a "stander" or stationary carousel. This means that the animal figures are designed to stand on the platform with at least three legs on the ground and they don't move up and down. This contrasts with "jumper" figures which usually move up and down and have all four legs elevated as if in mid-gallop. The Slater Park Carousel is the oldest Looff-stander carousel in the world. The platform features 44 horses, a camel, a giraffe, a lion, three dogs, and two chariots. Today the carousel is open from April through October. It operates on Saturdays and Sundays from 12pm - 5pm (daily in July and August). Rides cost $1. My family and I recently visited the Slater Park Looff Carousel. My wife and I have been carousel enthusiasts since we visited the New England Carousel Museum a few years ago. We were spending the day in the Greater Providence Area and decided to visit the Crescent Park Looff Carousel in Riverside (which is absolutely beautiful!) We learned that Charles Looff built another carousel in 1895 that was located nearby at Slater Park, so we made a drive there afterwards. We were a little disappointed that the Slater Park Carousel's horses don't move up and down and that there isn't a brass ring device like the one featured on the Crescent Park Carousel. That being said, the Slater Park Carousel is still exceptional. All of the horses and menagerie animal figures have been beautifully carved and painted. We also noticed that this carousel moves quite fast (about 9 mph). In fact, the speed has been slowed down over the years and used to be as high as 14 mph. Overall, we had a fun experience at the Slater Park Looff Carousel and would recommend carousel enthusiasts to visit it as well as the nearby Crescent Park Looff Carousel.

The parking lot off the main road is small, however their are many more spaces available down Govenor Notte Parkway. Bathrooms open during Summer, portapotty in the fall.

Swimming and small beach for the kids and a Playground, also benches. Benches can be quite dirty tho as well as the bridge rails full of spiderwebs and bugs. There's Also a baseball field. Beautiful sunset over the water at the right time but mosquitos can eat you up. There's events here for many occasions too.

Collyer Park is a park in Providence, near the Peter Pan Bus Lines Terminal and the Saint Raymonds…read moreChurch. It's mostly used by the residents of the area, since it is walkable to many homes. The park is small and the facilities a bit tired. I heard they are doing renovations soon to bring it back to a more modern state. The small playground is used often and there is a ball field as well.

There are trash cans and a toilet to use on site and there is handicap parking right next to walkway and water for easy access if needed. Several years ago, this beautiful waterfront property was an amusement park. After the amusement…read morepark closed, Rocky Point was abandoned for several years until the state of RI purchased it and reopened the property as a state park. You can still see the remnants of some of the rides, and there are informative signs throughout displaying the history of the property. I love the walking paths here, and I especially love poking around the shoreline at all of the little beach areas (some which are only accessible at low tide) and looking for shells and seaglass. Several of the walking paths are paved and are wheel chair accessible, and others a just a little more rugged with some climbing over rocks to get down to the shoreline. I also love the large fishing pier and this weekend my daughter and I relaxed on one of the benches out at the end of the pier and just enjoyed the sunshine. Rocky Point is an awesome place to spend time outdoors.
