We had a semi-annual maintenance contract with C.M. Mose & Son for a few years. We chose them…read morebecause they said they had techs who could work on both boilers and tankless water heaters. Big mistake! Last year, I noticed a leak from one of the pipes in our boiler and called them. The service person who came out said that he could "try" to fix it for a few thousand dollars or - and this was his recommendation - we could replace the entire old boiler since it was probably original to the house and was wearing out. We decided to go with having CM Mose install a new one. Our second big mistake! The process took several days and an entire crew. When they were finally done, the new boiler - a wall-mounted Lochinvar - worked for a few days then stopped. We called and, when the service guy came out, he said the temperature on the boiler was set incorrectly. He reset it and went away. A few days later, the boiler stopped working again and we called again. When the new service guy came out, he showed us a button on the boiler that we should push when it went out. The button would reset the system and restart it. When I complained that CM Mose & Son had stuck us with a "top-of-the-line boiler" that we would have to keep pushing a button on to make work, another crew came out. After several hours of them in our basement, one of the guys announced that the problem wasn't with the boiler but with our gas line. When our tankless water heater went on, the boiler would shut down as a safety measure. We were advised we needed to call Spire and get them to come out and replace our gas meter. We found out from Spire that, in order to replace our meter, they would need to replace the entire gas line to our house. When I complained to CM Mose that no one had told us that the new boiler they recommended would require us to replace the gas line to our house, they basically brushed us off. At any rate, we had Spire replace the gas line and meter, and the boiler has worked fine since. BUT last week, at the most recent semi-annual maintenance call, the CM Mose guy told us that we needed to replace the "pellets" on our boiler regularly or our pipes would corrode. They might have actually already corroded, he warned us since, whoever put the pellets in last, hadn't bothered to put a date on the box. The charge for ensuring our pipes didn't corrode? $211 every six to eight months. When I complained that we had not been told the new boiler would cost us at least $422 in yearly maintenance and that we hadn't even been informed when it was installed that it NEEDED pellets, I was kicked upstairs to a manager who told me that I didn't need to worry about my pipes corroding - not really - since "corrosion just means staining." When I told him that even I, a 78-yr-old woman, knew that corrosion did NOT just mean staining, I was told that their general manager, Chris, would call me. That never happened. Two days ago, I cancelled our maintenance contract with CM Mose and called another company. From them, I learned that my 3-yr-old sewer pipes were fine, that any tech who knew anything would have checked out the gas feed before installing the new boiler, and that - even with an excess of caution - pellet changing wouldn't need to be done any more often than once a year. So, thinking of our experience and looking at all the other reviews on this site, it seems that dealing with CM Mose & Son is a gamble. And, if you lose that gamble, it will wind up costing you a lot of money and even more aggravation.
