Let's be honest, most of downtown Cooperstown, NY is a gigantic tourist trap. It's very much like…read morethe town of Niagara Falls. They have a captive audience of bus tours and summer tourists that are visiting the Baseball Hall of Fame, and so the streets are lined with baseball-themed cafés, gift shops, and the usual touristy stuff. They do have some cool local farmers' markets on the weekends, but most everything else is focused on the baseball fans. Guilty as charged... my best friend is a huge New York Yankees fan, and he asked me to bring him back "something" from Cooperstown. As my Dad and I were walking back towards our car we spotted the Where It All Began Bat Company along Main Street. I looked through the front windows and saw displays of full-sized and miniature baseball bats that had been painted and personalized for the various Major League Baseball teams. I went into the shop and looked over the full-sized Rawlings and Louisville Slugger souvenir baseball bats all of which can be personalized by their on-site laser engraver with up to three lines of text. They also have miniature bats, whether bearing a MLB logo or a Cooperstown-themed logo, and those can be painted and also personalized. I got my friend an 18" miniature baseball bat, painted Yankees blue, and engraved with his name and the MLB logo. They were able to show me samples of finished bats so that I'd know what to expect. I was able to pay for the bat, the engraving, and the shipping down to South Florida, which meant one less thing to lug around in my luggage! Glen got the bat within a week, and he was thrilled with this unique gift and conversation starter. His wife has informed me that he hung up over his desk at home, and that she occasionally catches him standing in front of a mirror taking practice swings. Classy gift.....SCORE!!!

Rude service. I walked in to look for a bat rack for my…read morehusband's bats. I was not looking for particularly a certain style, but a rack that can hold about 10 bats. There was a young, thick man sitting behind the counter, never got up and glued to his computer and phone. It did not bother him there was someone walking around the store. I walked by the store couple of times and he is still in the same poistion.

Everyone there was great. The gentleman that gave us the tour was phenomenal. Extremely knowledgeable, got the players and parents involved and went above and beyond to make the tour memorable due everyone. One of the parents even said that we should've done the tour before the tournament to get the kids pumped up. After the tour, you can go crazy in there just choosing from hats, shirts, hoodies with great baseball sayings on them. It was buy one get one 50%, so the kid got site shirts and a pair of hats. Don't miss out on this opportunity when here. If you go with your team, they hand out limited editing pins, which we all know the kids go crazy for the pins.

Waited until about 3:10 and went back to the front desk and told them we were ready and they told us to keep waiting. A few minutes later we walked out. A parent from our group went back about 20min later and the manager says, "we told you guys to wait". This was a terrible experience. Do not expect anything out of the tour or the employees.

I have almost as much fun shopping in this store as I do walking through the Hall of Fame. I…read moreremember going here as an 8 year old and wanting everything in the store. Now I'm 31 and I want two of everything. Sure, they have all the stuff you'd expect to find in a Cooperstown gift shop: name/number t-shirts for current stars and Hall of Famers; New Era hats for all 30 teams, as well as vintage teams like the St. Louis Browns and Colts 45s; bumper stickers for the Yankees, Mets and Red Sox. But what makes this place special is the vintage souvenirs and fan gear. Remember puffy stickers? Remember 4-inch buttons with players' pictures on them? Remember batting helmet sundae and cereal bowls? Remember painter-style hats with MLB team logos? Remember ceramic bobbleheads? They're all here. And they're authentic. They don't sell replicas or reproductions of kitschy 70s and 80s fan collectibles. They sell originals, the same ones I was browsing over in 1989. One case contains mid-80s stickers for several MLB teams with a sign that says, "Ask about your favorite team!" I didn't see the Yankees, so I asked. "We've been sold out of them since the early 90s," replied the shopkeeper. "Once these are gone, they're gone forever. They don't make them anymore." In a strange way, I was more excited to hear that. Despite this, prices are fair and don't seem too far off from what they were in the 1980s. After you're done in the Hall, come here for a very different trip down memory lane. Even if you don't buy anything (doubtful) you'll leave with a smile on your face.
