I had a total knee replacement done on October 1 with Dr. Ryan Moore. Aside from the inconvenience of having surgery, I am completely happy with every part of my journey. I was up and dancing on the 17th day after surgery, which is amazing. I have experienced very little pain with the new medication Journavx, nothing above a three on the pain scale. I had an excellent experience with this Institute and with St. Helena Hospital. I I had a hip replacement on July 10th. I stayed the night before and had a wonderful dinner in their Wellness Center. The man who I booked the room with (I think his name is Doug), was great to talk to and so nice when I met him the day before the surgery. All of the staff starting with the front desk people in both the Institute and Hospital were kind, courteous, communicative and very helpful. I called several times before my actual surgery and they never made me feel that I was an annoyance. I was a nervous wreak before the surgery and the staff were great with me. Dr. Moore came to visit after my surgery and spend an unhurried 15 minutes with me, explaining everything. He is a master. I had TKR in May of 2020 on my right knee and it was a great experience. Great surgeon, fairly quick recovery and after my right knee was replaced the left knee decided to play nice -- no pain in that knee now either! I recommend this practice very highly. We called the Coon Institute for my husbands bad hip because the wait in our area of Humboldt County was going to be months just to be seen. From my first phone call to every follow up call we were kept in the loop of how things were advancing. Everyone we spoke with were so courteous and kind. We were given an appointment within weeks, not months. When we showed up today we were treated with respect and kindness. They took more x rays and did a complete medical history and then we met Dr Moore. He was easy to talk to, took his time explaining everything and did a physical test. He is a very sharp man and seems to be everything we heard the Dr's at Coon would be. My husband came away feeling validated and hopeful to have his hip replaced and be free of the debilitating pain he's been experiencing. The best part is he will be having this surgery before he would have even gotten into Ortho back home. Total knee replacement is an horrific thing to undergo. I have had my right knee replaced and revised by another surgeon and it still isn't working properly. So I was extremely anxious about undergoing this procedure again on the other knee. Dr. Moore and the entire staff at Coon Joint Replacement Institute have given me new hope. The surgery went perfectly. Recovery is progressing better than anticipated and I look forward to having Dr. Moore repair the right knee. In all fairness, this review is not about their surgical skills and care. HOWEVER, I would never get to that point with them: One of their requirements for hip replacement is 2 vaccines: the flu vaccine and the pneumonia vaccine! WTF?! The flu vaccine, her first ever, gave my mother a massive stroke. The 2 shots of the pneumonia vaccine gave Hillary Clinton 2 bouts of pneumonia; same with my hairdresser. NO THANK YOU!! read more

Been a year since my total knee replacement,can't bend my knee at all,still swollen and very painful,unable to do any of the activities I was actually able to do before my surgery. I am somewhat crippled at age 51, and was and abandoned by my DR. When my knee was not improving, they basically said 'too bad' and dismissed me. I am 10 times worse then I was before I went in, and left to figure it all out on my own. They are great as long as everything goes according to plan, and terrible when it doesn't. Beware. read more

I underwent partial joint replacement in Aug 2013. Dr Coon performed the surgery, and the care in the hospital afterwards was wonderful, true to the Adventist mission, as I am a Christian, and appreciate the process post-surgery care that got "my life back" with that surgery. Fast forward to Oct 2021, and I'll be undergoing a full knee replacement ion the left knee a couple of weeks with Dr, Diana performing that surgery. I will,expect the same care and my diligence to complete physical therapy and follow all instructions (as done with the surgery from 2013) and be ready to go back to work 6 weeks afterwards. read more

I had my first full knee replacement on November 1st 2022, am awaiting my second on March 1st 2023. For me it has been a total life saver I was to the point of not being able to walk, I couldn't even bend my knees a 1/4 of an inch they would get stuck. My knees were down to bone on bone and I had no quality of life my life consisted of living in my bedroom. Dr. Ryan Moore gave me my life back after the first surgery I have been able to walk after the second I'm going to be dancing. Had my hip done by Dr. Moore several years ago. Could not recommend more highly. Up and walking next day, done with the walker in two days, cane gone within a week or so, unless I was looking for sympathy. Only took one Ibuprofen for pain. Amazed. Should have done it years earlier. Should also have written a review earlier but I have been busy enjoying getting around without all the pain and stiffness right next to in the a.. Of course there were some communication hiccups and of course wrangling with insurance and billing, but all in all a small price to pay for the great result. I would do it again in a heartbeat and probably will before too long as the psoriatic arthritis is taking it's toll. Another hip, a couple knees, shoulders, elbows and I should check out about as good as almost new! read more

I am two weeks post surgery for knee replacement, and, my initial experience with office staff was very rocky. Delays getting back to me, no clear "person in charge" and absolutely no transparency on pricing. Finally I reached out to Adventist Health, and there I was served by responsive and professional staffers (thank you Benita and her supervisor who both take and actually return calls). My experience completely changed the day of the surgery. I actually had someone come give me a neck and head massage and aromatherapy while I was waiting for the anesthesiologist. I woke up post op feeling better than any previous surgery with pain and nausea completely absent. I walked twice that day and again in the morning before I checked out. Advice was comprehensive and accurate about what to do and expect. I am already scheduling my other knee, and have a friend from the east coast who is planning on flying out to have surgery here. The surgeons and facility are cutting edge offering newest techniques and best practices based upon evidence. I highly recommend Dr. Moore. read more

Dr. Coon is a bit of a rock star who has a great reputation for knee replacement surgery. Keeping with that reputation, the entire process is governed by a hurry up and be recovered narrative. But it's very invasive surgery; not magic. You will wait a long time at each visit, and then be rushed once you get in. I have a friend who went here too, and he has the same take-away. In my case, since I had two previous knee surgeries, there was a lot of scar tissue and I developed a large blood clot at the sight of the wound. This kept the wound open and slowed physical therapy. You would have thought I committed a sin. The doctor wrote a letter to the VA on my behalf (the knee was first injured while in the military) and stated that recovery could Occur in as little as 8 weeks. According to my Physical therapist who has treated many patients with knee replacements this is laughable as they ALL take from 6 months to a year before feeling recovered, as in, don't have to consider the bad knee when doing activities. I am four months out and it is still swollen, stiff, and I still at times limp. This is a cardinal sin at the Coon Institute. It doesn't fit into the rock star narrative, which is essentially a marketing narrative ($$$$). Yours will not fit the narrative either, I guarantee it! Yes, you will walk on a walker the night of the surgery, but on so many residual pain meds from the surgery you could nearly walk with the leg amputated. Don't let that fool you. This doesn't mean don't do it, just be ready to deal with the deception about recovery and plan on it taking longer than you are told. Don't share a discouraging word for you will be scorned. Trust your physical therapist and not the Doctor on this part. Sadly, when the marketing side overtakes the medical, the trust that should exist between patient and Doctor goes out the door. read more

After hearing rave reviews about the Coon clinic and some inconsistent reviews for my local , I decided to schedule my hip replacement with Dr. Caravelli at the clinic. I was impressed with my consult with him . He said the surgery went well. my postoperative care at St. Helena was great. However, I am 9 months out from my surgery and worse off than before surgery. after 3 months I was unable to lift my leg forward. he told me it was16 weeks till healing and be patient. After 4.5 months nothing had changed so he said he needed to see me. I couldn't get an appointment for 4 weeks. Then had 2 sets of X-rays and was told I had hip flexor tendinitis. was to rest and take anti- inflammatories for a month. nothing changed. Did 6 weeks physical therapy with no change. actually the pain was worse. Finally had an MRI May 25. made 3 calls to the office ( results were on my computer the next day) he apparently is waiting for the disc of the MRI. I was told last week that they made a phone appointment for me with Dr. Caravelli today. he was to call sometime after 3 pm. No call came. I would never recommend this kind of care to anyone. Something went wrong during the surgery which they refuse to address. I have asked for copies of my records which I have yet to receive. I am told Ortho surgeons don't like to deal with a problem they didn't cause. so I'm between a rock and a hard place. I will be having my other hip done elsewhere. read more

Hip surgery 2/17. Followed dr's instructions. iced and elevated for a week. After that ZERO pain. Staff and surgeon completely professional and helpful. My wife arranged a car big enough for me to keep my leg elevated on the 4 hour drive home, and we got out of the car once within every hour to move around some. Picked this hospital because one of the very best ratings re infections. It was readily apparent that this is a well run Hospital in St. Helena and my surgeon Dr. Diana did a PERFECT job. read more

Dr. Coon replaced my R knee in Jan. 2013. He did a great job. Recovery was "easy". The incision was 4-5 inches long, and the scar barely shows. He didn't cut any muscle. I've always been knock-kneed and slew-footed. Dr. Coon, along with his highly intelligent robotics, and I should say his highly intelligent *use* of the robotics, changed the planes of my tibial and femoral heads and now I walk normally (on that leg) and have developed a muscle below my knee (medial side) that I didn't know I had. To say that Dr. Coon is extremely skilled is just inadequate. He's also creative and is at the forefront of knee replacement surgery. I wish I lived closer to where he practices. Caveat to older people: There's a condition called post-surgical cognitive dysfunction and I had it to a frightening degree: It's caused by the general anesthesia (I can't get any doctors to admit there is such a thing, but nurses and anesthesiologists know). There's a lost week while I refused to leave the hospital, ran over people's feet with my walker, and got into a physical fight with 4 security guards. Finally they put me on a shuttle to my motel, where I tried to kill myself. Now I'm ready for my L knee. This time there'll be someone to pick me up, ride with me on the shuttle to Sacramento, let me stay at his house. If I'd had someone with me after my R knee (my ride got disgusted with me for refusing to leave the hospital and left -- friends, huh?), I wouldn't have tried to kill myself. Thankfully, I'm not a practiced suicidee, so the pills didn't work. I've found out that knee replacement can be done with a nerve block of the leg only. I wish they had given me that option, since I had had bad reactions to general anesthesia before. read more

Surgery was just two days ago, so can't speak to the healing outcome. However, enjoyed congenial manner of surgeon, Dr. Moore, who never seemed to rushed to address all questions. Hospital staff from pre-op to recovery to unit all attentive, appeared competent and were ceaselessly cheerful. However, want to issue an alert regarding the policy of discharging within 24 hours following surgery. At the conclusion of the procedure while still in OR, surgical site is bathed in a wash of a numbing agent. This blissful painless oblivion lasts just long enough to get patient through discharge on day following surgery. What awaited on arrival home 1 1/2 hours distant was alarming and quite another story: almost fell on driveway when attempting to move from car to house. Pain was intense, and following drive with leg in uncompromising position, the said limb protested mightily upon demand of weight bearing. With only one moderate sized adult to sort out this dilemma, situation was dire. Finally made the house with assistance of multiple chairs situated strategically along the route... This struggle continued through the rest of the day. Finally made it to bed, but ended up on the floor when attempting to go to the bathroom at 11:30 at night (why wasn't a urinal included in the discharge items?). This was the worst, took one hour to get up and back to bed. Very close to calling for paramedic help. With the help of the aforementioned adult, had to scoot and use a couple of step stools to elevate body enough to get purchase on the walker... Altogether a miserable, scary day which could have been alleviated by an extra day in the hospital, or at least a wheelchair to assist over the initial harsh period. Will write again in a couple of weeks to evaluate outcome of surgery. read more

I had my knee replaced on July 5th. I have absolutey no complaints about the procedure or the recovery but I'm a bit disappointed in the follow up post procedure. Follow up appointment was almost 2 hours later than scheduled time and getting the staff to respond to work related questions has been impossible. Like the surgeons... staff needs work. read more

Unbelievable experience! Never had major surgery and was very nervous. Had both hips replaced (6 months apart) and had very successful experiences. The hospital is like a resort. VERY attentive staff and Dr. Freehand was the best surgeon one could ask for. Both procedures went very smoothly, minimal pain and back to work within 5 days, just as they predicted. I cannot say enough good comments to reflect my experiences! Wish I had another hip ...I enjoyed the R and R. read more

Went in to get my hips replaced and have to say Dr. Diana was totally awesome, and so where his staff. Now I see why people from eureka would travel 4.5 hours to see Dr.Diana ( which driving that long after surgery is no pic-nic) I just had my surgery yesterday so I can't comment on the healing and how long etc. I'lll add that later when I find out. The only thing I didn't like about coon was there food was absolutely disgusting!!!! I had breakfast, lunch and dinner there in hopes I just ordered something the cook messed up but nope, everything was so bland and gross, I took a bite out of each thing and spit it back out, gross. And the cafe isn't any better they push healthy things down your throat...pass. read more

Knee Replacement by Dr. Moore exactly one week ago 6/23/2015. Not only was Dr. Moore the most personable Doctor I have ever met, but the supporting staff made you immediately feel confidant and comfortable. They treated your coach and family with the same respect. The decision to remove a body part is naturally not an easy one! Previously, I had seen three other orthopedic surgeons who recommended knee replacement. I was terrified and did not feel secure in their care. I am a regular person, Mom, teacher and still relatively young(53). From the first time contacting the Coon's Institute to the recovery instructions after surgery I not once doubted my decision to put my trust in Dr. Moore. Somehow, even though every person's recovery is different, the staff was very accurate in describing what to expect. And yes, you are released from the hospital still under some heavy pain numbing medicines. I agree with the other posts about the time line of return of feeling. It is approximately couple hours after being released. I used the walker for 3 days and an still using the cane for balance. It has been seven days and I actually walked further yesterday (.75 mile) than I have in 2 years without pain. The swelling was the most on day 3 because I thought I was superwoman and way overdid! It is definitely a learning curve knowing when to push and when to hold back. I have found, that the exercises given are more of a guide. When you feel good, try to complete more reps. When you have a lot of swelling, lower your reps. Most importantly, slow, steady approach is the way to go. Also, it is hard to sleep. I have found that taking the appropriate pain pills, and icing right before bed helps. Keep the ice machine near your bed and use it immediately if the pain wakes you up. I cannot put into words how thankful I am for Dr. Moore and all his supportive staff! You made a huge difference in my life! read more

Dr. Coon did a successful replacement of my right knee about six years ago. At that time the office seemed to be running well and I was pleased with my recovery. Despite what appeared to be some deterioration in efficiency of the office and a problem with Coon not being available because he was spending lots of time overseas, I opted to have my left knee replaced by him in August 2016. At first the replacement seemed to be working, but after about 6 months the knee began to be painful. When I told Coon about it he blew me off and said the pain would go away. It did not. In early September 2017 I called the Coon Joint Institute for an appointment to see Dr. Coon. The earliest appointment was three months later in December. The delay is because Dr. Coon only flies into the country to do surgeries about every 2-3 months. In the meantime the knee became so painful I pursued other options and I had a successful knee revision at UCSF. Much of the knee pain was because the part on the tibia had become loose and easily came off with a small amount of pressure. Coon's knee replacements are probably ok if there are no problems, but he does not do revisions, his patient schedule is completely ridiculous with overbooking, and his work cannot be relied on. At this point I think he is doing the replacements only for the money and I cannot recommend him. I can recommend Dr. Erik Hansen at UCSF who did the revision though. read more

Medicare rip off artists. I had to get x-rays of my knees before I could get a counseling appointment which I did at the Adventist hospital in Sonora, California. I went to my appointment and they said I needed X-Rays. I asked where were the the ones were that I had already taken. There response was they couldn't find them. They took new one just like I had already had. Same angles and everything the same. I just got my Medicare statement and I and the first ones billed medicare $90.00. Coon Joint Replacement Institute billed Medicare $2,065.00 for the very same thing. Now I know why Medicare is going broke. I cancelled my surgery and won't support this kind business. read more

Had left knee replacement surgery about 4yrs. ago, followed by right knee surgery 6 months later. Can't say enough good words about Dr. Blackwood and Dr. Coon !! My outcome has been terrific !!. I am a musician and play the organ (with a full pedal board) in church every Sunday - only took Sunday after the surgery off - resumed my normal playing / teaching activities thereafter - no pain and no problems - just a little stiffness until the swelling subsided which didn't take long and certainly did not slow me down very much.. Dr. Coon is a masterful surgeon who did a truly excellent job with my total knee replacement. I was NOT looking for hand-holding. I was looking for an amazingly skilled surgeon. Yes, his office has a lot of patients and is very much no-nonsense and business-like, but that's what I wanted. My knee replacement was done perfectly in 30 minutes under conscious sedation (no general ansthesia). I was walking with a walker the evening of the surgery. I went home 24 hours after the surgery. The incision was completely closed, sealed, and dry in five days. I had zero infection. Three weeks post-surgery I can walk around my house, slowly, without a cane, which isn't bad for being 70. Getting back to full knee function, becoming pain-free, and having no more swelling will take more time and a lot of physical therapy, but when I'm fully recovered, I'm going straight back to Dr. Coon to get the other knee done! read more
