Coming back to the metro area. Looking for a place to start. Found Coolfont resort. Stepping back in time with a physical key for the room, we had a room overlooking a small pond. Property includes a saltwater pool, teens courts and basketball... The arcade is fun and the restaurant on property has great "bar food" ! View is nice. Alittle pricey but overall a nice place to stay! read more

Overall, I had a decent time at this resort but some things made it feel less like a resort and more just like a simpler and cheaper place to stay. NOTE: There is NO WiFi at the cabins, only at the main lodge(you have to be inside the main lodge-to access the wifi- which closes at 8pm). To get from the lodge to the cabin we stayed at, the road was not well paved--it was bumpy and mostly rocks and unpaved terrain. We stayed at one of the cabins that is a five-minute walk or two-minute drive from the main lodge. The resort is a short drive from the small town and state park with hiking and mountain biking which is amazing Our cabin had a fire pit area, picnic table, porch with chairs, two bedrooms (one with two beds), two full bathrooms, a kitchen table, microwave, coffee machine, heater and AC, and a TV area with couches and chairs. Sadly they only provided us with 3 paper plates and cups, and plastic silverware, there was no room service who came to replenish our eating materials(as we thought there would be) so after one night, we had nothing to eat out of or with. Additionally there is no way to cook/make food, only a microwave to reheat with. The satellite TV service is spotty, and you can't sign into subscriptions. The people working at the front desk of the lodge were always very resourceful and kind. Unfortunately, the main lodge's pool and fitness center are only open for limited hours from 10am to 6pm. That was very frustrating because those were the hours of the day I was out mountain biking and hiking. The pool is decently heated and was neither too cold nor too hot. The jacuzzi wasn't hot at all--it's actually colder than the pool. There is a sauna there, but it wasn't open when we went. Right next to the lodge, there are extremely nice pickleball and tennis courts with provided equipment. Sadly, swimming in the lake wasn't allowed during our stay. The lodge property is decently large with a lot of greenery and hiking trails. I bet it would be very beautiful during the fall with fall foliage. read more

First I'd like to say the cabin we rented was cute. The location is close to town. The cabin was clean and looks to have been recently remodeled. Now the bad. The cabin was not as advertised on Vrbo and the listing was dishonest. This is very likely the fault of both the host/resort and Vrbo for not verifying the listing's description. The cabin was listed on Vrbo as having a fireplace. In the photos of the cabin listing there is a wood burning stove. Unfortunately there was no fireplace or wood stove. This was supposed to be a special weekend for my partner's birthday and we were very disappointed. I was not notified until checking-in that the cabin has no internet service. This was not in the listing which I feel is deceptive. I can't remember the last time I stayed in a rental that did not have internet (15, 20 year ago maybe). If you require internet and solitude to do work remotely during your stay this is not the place you should stay. The cabins are in a small village of A-frames jammed in against each other. Not exactly private imo. Our fire pit was between our cabin and our neighbor's cabin and sat 5ft from the edge of the other cabin's roof/wall. A dangerous fire hazard. Drafty old wood windows made the cabin quite cold. There were not enough blankets for us to use so we had to pull blankets off the second bed to stay warm--even with the heat cranked up. The amenities are bare bones--no toaster, tiny coffee maker, no kitchen towels, no glasses! What are we supposed to drink out of? The Sofa in the living room is old and worn out you're basically sitting on a wood frame. We had to use bed pillows to sit comfortably. The entire operation seems like a ploy to force you into the lodge for their pay-to-play options. The host provided poor communication. I had to spend 40min chatting with Vrbo to get check-in instructions before we could leave for our trip. In the age of Air BnB superhosts this rental was severely lacking in amenities and comfort. Overall the experience was poor. We will not be staying at Coolfont Lodge and Resort again. In and around Berkeley Springs WV you can certainly do better for a rental--we certainly have in the past. If all you need is a room this is fine. If you require internet or other basic amenities you would expect of a "resort" look elsewhere. read more

Stayed from a few days after Christmas until a few days after New Year's Eve. We rented a house on the mountain from Mountainside. The accommodations were perfect for our family of nine. Walking through the resort was enjoyable. It can be done on the roads or on trails. There are not many trails; however, the roads were not busy and people drive slowly We had massages which were wonderful. The masseuse did a great job and the cost was good. Big recommendation for Evelyne. We did not get down to the restaurant but will try and eat there next time. We ate in our rental for every meal. (The food Lion in town was more than adequate for provisions.) One downside- pool was "out of order". It is a nice pool and would have been nice to enjoy before massages. read more

The cabin was sparse and ugly. The rooms had one bedside tables, only overhead lighting and zero charm or extra comfort. No cups were left for coffee, no Kleenex or extra toilet paper, and only one thin blanket on the bed when it was 25 degrees out. Thankfully I had brought an extra blanket from home! This is the restaurant inside the Coolfont Resort. Recently reopened in 2019. I didn't grab any photos of dinner with the exception of the huge pretzel. Menu pricing was on the higher end but portions were huge. Smash burger, shrimp, and the Calamari were all excellent. Calamari said "fresh" on the menu and I looked at my wife and rolled my eyes. I was pleasantly surprised as they were some of the tenderest ones I've had in quite awhile. Breakfast was awesome. Everything we ordered was cooked perfectly and the pancakes were amazing. If you're looking for a hotel, this is great. Rooms are clean, spacious and well maintained. If you're looking for a resort..this is not it. The lake is overgrown and full of algae. You will not want to kayak or boat in it without fear of a disease. The heated saltwater pool is absolutely freezing. And it's just a pool in a building, no amenities, wierd outdated patio furniture, and again, it's freezing. The tennis courts are overgrown, there are no hiking trails. So again, if you just want a hotel room, great spot. But don't expect any amenities for a resort. read more

I had looked over the online menu prior to making the hours drive. Osso Bucco was on the list of entrees so I decided to go simply for that. Arrived to find a nice clean restaurant with a decent view of a quaint lake. Restaurant is decorated in a rustic woodsy theme. They were offering a specialty Margarita for $12.00. I asked how many ounces it was which the waitress couldn't answer. I had her bring me the glass that they served it in before I placed an order for one. GLAD I DID! No Margarita glasses available but instead was being served in a 12 ounce draft beer glass. Ordered an appetizer of calamari which was described as a five star preparation. OMG I could only eat one piece. The absolute worst I have ever had so I sent it back. This was frozen rings over battered, and over deep fried. (STRIKE ONE) Next I ordered what I had driven an hour for, the Osso Bucco. SORRY, I SOLD THE ONLY ONE WE HAD LAST NIGHT! (STRIKE TWO) So I was forced to try something else. I thought the Marinated Pork Ribeye looked good as described. 8 oz grilled pork ribeye on a bed of Yukon Gold Mashed Potatoes, caramelized onions, and Demi Sauce. Served with vegetable du jour. (STRIKE THREE). The Yukon Gold Potatoes were very poor tasting very white instant potatoes of some sort. The onions were simple sautéed no where near being caramelized. No Demi Glaze Sauce at all. The vegetable was asparagus and again the worst I have ever eaten. Hard and crunchy and nearly unable to cut. I ate two pieces before I decided it wasn't worth getting sick over. No bread was served until I asked for it. My wife had The entrée of chicken cordon bleu. Again a frozen product prepared by someone who didn't know what they were doing. She took two bites and could stomach anymore. On the other hand, the salads were nothing special but acceptable and the ice tea had a good flavor. The waitress was exceptional, she heard my complaints and visually inspected the food concurring with my dissatisfaction. A trip for $70.00 in the restaurant. I have read good reviews but my experience was dreadful! I cannot recommend that anyone try it but only to avoid it. read more

The food is good including the Berkeley Springs Food Week specials (Jan) and a wide variety of other menu items and a great list of beers on tap. This review is for the Treetop Restaurant. We first tried this place after moving to Berkeley Springs 4 years ago. It was wonderful then. Food and service were both excellent, but something sure has changed. I suspect a new chef - and it's not good! The past 3 times we've been there have been sub-par and just meh, but this past Sunday was the worst ever. It was made even more embarrassing because we brought out of town friends to have breakfast. The woman who seated us asked us to be patient because there were only two servers working. Okay, we can deal with that. She brought our drinks quickly and took our orders, but that was the last we saw of her for quite awhile. One of our guests sat with an empty water glass for a long time. We had to call our server over for a refill. She apologized for the delay in getting our food and blamed it on an 11-top in another room, but I could clearly seen tables around us getting their food, and they had arrived after us. She seemed to be more interested in visiting other tables and talking with people at the bar. The food finally arrived and nothing was really hot enough. One of our guests was given the wrong order -- she ordered the corned beef hash and eggs but was given chipped beef gravy and potatoes. So she had to wait even longer for her order to be remade. She ordered her eggs over-easy, but they were hard. The omelets were not warm enough, and the cheese wasn't even melted inside. Biggest disappointment for me was the potatoes. They were frozen little squares of something supposed to be potatoes, but not even close. How hard is it to make real breakfast potatoes? We should have just stayed home and cooked for ourselves. Needless to say, unless there is a new chef we most likely won't be back. As my husband said, "I think I'm through with Coolfont." read more

This is a gem in the making. Tucked away on the mountainside near Berkeley springs, this quaint lodge is secluded and convenient. We have a two room accessible suite that is scrupulously clean, laminate floors making moving with a walker safe and easy, the step in shower is spacious and the shower chair thoughtful. The room is austere and roomy, perfect when navigating with a walker or wheelchair. The road to the venue reminded me of home (the hills of Pittsburgh) hilly with a mama deer and her babies! The lake is right down the hill, surrounded by trees this is a lovely spot. I had breakfast at the restaurant overlooking the lake, a HUGE plate of pancakes, with sausage and potatoes, delish! Service was great, the view is terrific and the menu prices are reasonable. Coffee is available in the lobby 24/7, it's a very nice light roast, perfect for sipping in the morning and watching the forest come to life. read more

Cute, quaint and secluded. I didn't stay at the resort and only visited for dinner. They have 24 beers on tap at great prices ($3.25-$6 // most of them $4 or $5). The apple butter brisket sandwich was OUT OF THIS WORLD! So delicious!!! This should be on the menu full time instead of a special for apple butter festival. The French onion soup was good but didn't come with cheese on top. Honestly it tasted like progreso soup and needed to be hotter. I would pass on The mushroom and steak soup. It wasn't very hot and it tasted like can of cream of mushroom soup with brisket chunks. The brisket sandwich with fries was so good stick with that. The two tables next to us got the pretzel appetizer and that was HUGE and looked delish. read more

Worst food ever. The menu has changed. It used to be more fresh made chef menu food. Now it's just like a diner menu-which is fine if the food is good. The only vegetable available is French fries or baked potatoe or the veg of the day. The coffee was horrible. Not fresh brewed. Not brewed at all actually-and not keurig. Lemon Trout had no lemon flavor and the baked potato was close raw. The steak was more fat then meat. Kids chicken tenders were flat and wafer thin. We spoke to the waitress and she said the chef would come out but he never appeared. She said he spoke to the owner and they blew it odd. She said they would give us a discount and didn't. Will not return unless a new chef or owner again. Music was too loud but bar was full. The bartender must be good. read more

The hotel was amazing, but the restaurant was terrible. The rooms were clean, spacious, and very well maintained. We loved the fire place on the cool evenings! The pool was perfect and the hot tub was nice too. We stayed for our anniversary weekend, and the staff gave us a commemorative mug to celebrate. However, I cannot give that praise to the restaurant. My husband unfortunately fell sick from the food later in the night. I was not thrilled at all with the fish special I ordered, and they forgot about our salad/soup. Stopped for lunch with two friends. The restaurant was empty but, over the 90 minutes we were there, a few other tables were occupied. Food was greasy and unappetizing. We asked for three glasses of house wine. Were almost finished with meal before waitress brought big pours for us. Bigger than 9oz! And NOT chilled. When we asked for butter and jelly for our toast, she brought out 3-4 small individual containers in her hands and plopped them on the table. She may have been new to the job but surely needs more training! Will not be going back there, although the new owners have done a good job renovating the old place. read more

HORRIBLE. Should be ZERO stars. It took 20 minutes to just get water. We were a table of 14. There were 3 other tables in the restaurant. It took 40 minutes to take our order. The one waitress struggled the entire time while 3 stood at the bar. No one cleared one plate in the over 2 hours were there. Some had finished eating when others had not gotten meals there meals. 3 people the orders never came out - and then they only brought out 2 meals and forgot the other. An appetizer came out after the people who ordered it were done eating- and they acted surprised we did not want it. It took 20 minutes to run checks because they could not handle taking more back then 3 at a time. Over 2 hours - we did not order alcohol. No dessert - and an appetizer that came after dinner. The meals did not come with both sides - and no excuse or options or apologies or price change. They also guaranteed the shrimp was breaded there - it was not. It was dirty because of all the dirty dishes and a waitress came over and took to paper menus and gave them to some else, and never thought to take anything else. Never once did we see any one than 4 waitress' - 2 that were together and one was training. No one apologized or had a worry that worked there. HORRIBLE read more

Holy cow! The portions at this spot are HUGE. You will NOT go home hungry. The Bavarian Pretzel is comically large, but the best, softest most cloudy pillow of a pretzel I have ever eaten. Ahi Tuna was perfect, and the chicken parmigiana on special tasted just like homemade. Out server, Jayden, was attentive, charming and even complimented US as we were leaving. She was delightful. And the view is amazing. The ONLY reason this place isn't a 5 star is that I ordered a dirty martini, up. I received straight vodka w/ ice chips in it. Very Disappointed!!! Poor Customer Service!!! If I could give negative stars I would. I would NOT recommend Coolfont Resort to anyone. There are much better options. We visited Coolfont Resort on Saturday to obtain more information regarding a private room rental. The woman (Janell) at the front desk provided very few details and indicated she would provide menu options on Monday via email. She didn't seem very interested in renting the room. She handed me a small piece of scrap paper and a pencil. I provided my name, phone # and email address. Today is Thursday and I still have not received a response. I have emailed and called several times with no luck. The customer service leaves a lot to be desired if the woman at the front desk is your best example of a "Hospitality Manager" or "Event Coordinator". As the first person most customers see, front-desk clerks need to represent their companies with professionalism and friendliness. Management should reconsider providing additional customer service training. Just think of how much business you would have if you actually responded to customer inquiries. And on a final note, one of the best things about learning how to give great customer service is that these skills are transferable to every other area of your life. Whether it's in a professional manner or in your personal life, people skills are valuable. And that's what customer service is. Will I be back? Nope!!! Never!! Not in a million years!!! P.S. I finally received a response regarding the information requested. An email was sent several minutes after I left my negative review. This is why businesses in Berkeley Springs, WV are failing. The beer and sandwiches are also good. Everything was priced right. The sandwiches were around $10. I was very happy with cool fonts restaurant! The view was also great. I had breakfast here it was excellent. I met the chef that made my breakfast and you can really tell that she cares about what she is making in every bite you can taste and the love that was actually preparing and time it took to make the food got to say it was 1 of the best breakfasts I have had in a very long time without me making it myself. The house keeping was perfect nice kind and caring was helpful at every turn the front desk staff was great as far as the eating in their restaurant it self is questionable the food was great. Full disclosure: This is down season at Coolfont. The resort is spotless and clean so kudos to the housekeeping staff who keep the rooms clean also. They do an amazing job. The food at Treetop restaurant is very good with Chef Cheryl at the helm. She is a serious chef so it's all good especially her deft handling of any fish. Crab cakes amazing. Soups on a wintry day yum!! I only hope Coolfont realizes what a gem they have and does not burn her out. U will not go away hungry. Their mixology could do with a refresh to highlight the alcohol stars. A bright light at Coolfont is the saltwater pool which was not identified when we made the reservation. Odd yes because soothing saltwater beats chlorine any day of the week. It's within walking distance but be aware to bring a long sleeve shirt as the pool water combined with the pool ambience can get a bit chilly. No a lot of chilly. The rooms are nice but do not expect a Greenbriar or Landsdowne experience because you are paying for an affordable West Virginia experience of scenic beauty and politeness. Having said that the oddest comment came from the front desk which was helpful but when asked for food hotspots a response was that they did not eat other people's food. Ok great. But, ur manning the front desk any ideas? All in all, Berkeley Springs Coolfont is an affordable fun get away. Bring a good book because the town retail is limited but worthwhile and will take about 2-3 hours to visit. read more

Save your money and avoid this place. The place is deteriorating. The indoor pool was closed, though no mention of it on the website or even a sign until you actually try and go there. Service at the restaurant was slow and food was cold. Waitress never bothered to come check on us until we were done eating and needing drinks refilled for over 30 minutes. We went to Coolfont to celebrate my birthday this year and we had 3 kids and 3 adults. We were hustled right to our table and our eyes were bugging right out of our heads with the menu. We finally decided on our picks even though everything looked amazing! Our food came and we devoured as much as we could! Every kid (and you know how kids can be with being fussy about food) and adult were thrilled with their choices and we all ordered dessert on top of it even though we didn't have any room left! The giant pretzel was our favorite and the cheese for dipping is incredible. All the desserts are amazing as well but we enjoyed the pork, pizza, steak sandwich, (those are the ones I remember). At any rate, long story short, they're amazing. I'd recommend reservations for large parties and peak times since they do get busy! read more

The absolute worst three days ever at Coolfont Resort- from being told 10 times that my dog is not allowed in the hotel due to a recent health inspection, even though all personnel told me that ur dog is welcome all thru the hotel , except obviously in the restaurant, to the next morning heading for breakfast on the deck overlooking the lake with our dog where he us allowed we were told by the waitress she cannot wait on us on the deck as she is by herself and must stay in the dining room even though there was no one there and a total of two cars in the parking lot , turning her back on us and walking away, to checking out the next day with the same front desk clerk we saw at checkin telling us she never said that about the dog then said she did and when I mentioned the episode in the restaurant she said the waitress was right not serving us on the deck as she had to stay in the restaurant even though we have coupons as a perk from the hotel for two breakfasts and just kept angering me more and more and even asking me if it rained would I eat on the deck with my dog and started laughing at me!! That was it.!! Never again!! Still waiting for a phone call from the owner!!! read more

I had dinner here recently while visiting family back east. The food was off the charts excellent. My sister was hesitant to order the osso buco and she couldn't have been more pleased with the dish. I had the cowboy ribeye and it was juicy and cooked to medium rare perfection. My mom had the meatloaf and it was awesome. The kids got grilled cheeses that came with house made potato chips. They were so good, even as cold leftovers the next day. They had a nice wine list along with several ales and ciders on tap. Our server Dan was very attentive and made our dinner memorable. That was my second time eating there since they reopened a few years ago under new ownership. They did a wonderful job with the new look and upgrades. Pros: wifi at the cottage (no wifi at their cabins), clean and has a lot of natural light, salt water pool and hot tub, friendly staff, dogs are allowed, food is good quality. This is a review of only the restaurant inside the resort and not the resort itself. We went as a party of six for Mother's Day and made reservations. We were able to get seated about twenty minutes early, which was great. Our waitress was also very sweet. The food, however, mostly left something to be desired. The appetizers were split - we all loved the pretzel with beer cheese, but the ahi tuna was bland. The mother of the group and myself ordered one of the special Mother's Day entrees and twenty minutes later we were told it was all sold out and we had to choose another option. Another member of our party had to ask for a ginger ale three times because it was either too light on syrup or too heavy on syrup. The chili that two members had was stone-cold. Chicken with mashed potatoes and broccoli was EXTREMELY peppery and nearly inedible. The shrimps in the arrabiatta was black. Overall, we will not be back, as there are other options close by the resort that are better and more highly-rated. read more
