    Sunrise from our mountain retreat
    Jenna D.

Stayed from a few days after Christmas until a few days after New Year's Eve. We rented a house on the mountain from Mountainside. The accommodations were perfect for our family of nine. Walking through the resort was enjoyable. It can be done on the roads or on trails. There are not many trails; however, the roads were not busy and people drive slowly We had massages which were wonderful. The masseuse did a great job and the cost was good. Big recommendation for Evelyne. We did not get down to the restaurant but will try and eat there next time. We ate in our rental for every meal. (The food Lion in town was more than adequate for provisions.) One downside- pool was "out of order". It is a nice pool and would have been nice to enjoy before massages.

This is the restaurant inside the Coolfont Resort. Recently reopened in 2019. I didn't grab any photos of dinner with the exception of the huge pretzel. Menu pricing was on the higher end but portions were huge. Smash burger, shrimp, and the Calamari were all excellent. Calamari said "fresh" on the menu and I looked at my wife and rolled my eyes. I was pleasantly surprised as they were some of the tenderest ones I've had in quite awhile. Breakfast was awesome. Everything we ordered was cooked perfectly and the pancakes were amazing. I don't have them often. They were super fluffy and had the right amount of vanilla.

I had looked over the online menu prior to making the hours drive. Osso Bucco was on the list of entrees so I decided to go simply for that. Arrived to find a nice clean restaurant with a decent view of a quaint lake. Restaurant is decorated in a rustic woodsy theme. They were offering a specialty Margarita for $12.00. I asked how many ounces it was which the waitress couldn't answer. I had her bring me the glass that they served it in before I placed an order for one. GLAD I DID! No Margarita glasses available but instead was being served in a 12 ounce draft beer glass. Ordered an appetizer of calamari which was described as a five star preparation. OMG I could only eat one piece. The absolute worst I have ever had so I sent it back. This was frozen rings over battered, and over deep fried. (STRIKE ONE) Next I ordered what I had driven an hour for, the Osso Bucco. SORRY, I SOLD THE ONLY ONE WE HAD LAST NIGHT! (STRIKE TWO) So I was forced to try something else. I thought the Marinated Pork Ribeye looked good as described. 8 oz grilled pork ribeye on a bed of Yukon Gold Mashed Potatoes, caramelized onions, and Demi Sauce. Served with vegetable du jour. (STRIKE THREE). The Yukon Gold Potatoes were very poor tasting very white instant potatoes of some sort. The onions were simple sautéed no where near being caramelized. No Demi Glaze Sauce at all. The vegetable was asparagus and again the worst I have ever eaten. Hard and crunchy and nearly unable to cut. I ate two pieces before I decided it wasn't worth getting sick over. No bread was served until I asked for it. My wife had The entrée of chicken cordon bleu. Again a frozen product prepared by someone who didn't know what they were doing. She took two bites and could stomach anymore. On the other hand, the salads were nothing special but acceptable and the ice tea had a good flavor. The waitress was exceptional, she heard my complaints and visually inspected the food concurring with my dissatisfaction. A trip for $70.00 in the restaurant. I have read good reviews but my experience was dreadful! I cannot recommend that anyone try it but only to avoid it.

    What's left of the Calamari!

The Coolfont Resort harkens back to an age of motor coach vacations to escape the pollution of city life, a place to rest and relax in the Mountains of WV. Vestiges of this bygone era still remain and Coolfont is an example of how they are beginning to transform themselves to meet the needs of the present day. The investment continues. Within Coolfont is the Treetops restaurant. A bight and open eatery that is a cross between a sports bar (TVs and bar) and a family dining room. The food is good including the Berkeley Springs Food Week specials (Jan) and a wide variety of other menu items and a great list of beers on tap. We had the fish and chips, meatloaf dinner and pasta and shrimp dinners. The calamari was fresh and enjoyable. Service was good with a nice local charm.

This is a gem in the making. Tucked away on the mountainside near Berkeley springs, this quaint lodge is secluded and convenient. We have a two room accessible suite that is scrupulously clean, laminate floors making moving with a walker safe and easy, the step in shower is spacious and the shower chair thoughtful. The room is austere and roomy, perfect when navigating with a walker or wheelchair. The road to the venue reminded me of home (the hills of Pittsburgh) hilly with a mama deer and her babies! The lake is right down the hill, surrounded by trees this is a lovely spot. I had breakfast at the restaurant overlooking the lake, a HUGE plate of pancakes, with sausage and potatoes, delish! Service was great, the view is terrific and the menu prices are reasonable. Coffee is available in the lobby 24/7, it's a very nice light roast, perfect for sipping in the morning and watching the forest come to life.

We have stayed at probably 10 B&Bs throughout our relationship, but Anthony and Kathleen were the warmest, most hospitable hosts we have ever encountered. I have special dietary challenges (gluten-free, dairy-free, egg-free, no additives), and they not only had organic bacon available (standard), but they also enthusiastically dug in to creating a new pancake recipe for me and whipped up a delicious, nutritious green smoothie to order. We ate on the sunny back porch. They also left us chocolates, water, and a hand-written anniversary card in our room, and they made fresh scones every day, which my husband loved, and fresh popcorn in the evening, which I enjoyed. We stayed in the West Virginian room, which was comfortable and beautiful. The whole place appears to be freshly renovated and pristine. The temperature was comfortable, unlike how we froze from the a/c at the B&B we went to on our first anniversary. Bonus: the heat comes from geo-thermal sources, which is a green energy source. Both rooms open onto a large balcony, which is very peaceful, as they have 65 acres of land. The stars are also lovely from their back porch at night. On our last day, we asked what time check-out was, but Anthony said that we were family and could leave whenever convenient. I was able to take a nap, and we left at 1:45 after celebrating Mass with Kathleen's brother--I kid you not. We were so touched that we were invited to participate in an in-home Mass--what a special, bonding experience! And although my husband is not a baptized Christian, they warmly included him. In fact, they eagerly lapped up tales of his Middle Eastern homeland and learned from us. Kathleen showed us her organic tea collection--they run a tea house downstairs--and let us sniff all the aromatic blends we wanted to. We left with gifts of organic tea and plan to send them a gift in return. We will definitely be back to see our new friends and relax in Berkeley Springs, which is an ideal place to hike, bathe for your health, renew your spirits, and rekindle your love.

It's charming, cozy, and full of character in a way that's hard to find anymore. We stayed in Room 15, the Bernstein Suite, and it was incredibly spacious. The bed was so comfortable, and I loved the thoughtful details -- especially the cute vanity room with amazing natural light and the cozy seating area. The decor throughout the inn and in the room really stood out to me and was easily my favorite part of the stay. It felt like such a unique blend of historic charm and comfort. This stay was extra special for us as it was part of our 10-year anniversary trip while driving to New York City, and it ended up being the perfect halfway stop to break up the drive. It made the whole trip feel even more memorable. We also dined at Clem's Kitchen during our stay, and the food was great. (I'm gluten free and there were plenty of options!) I really appreciated that it's part of the inn, which made the overall experience feel seamless and convenient. Overall, it's the kind of place where you can slow down, soak in the atmosphere, and enjoy something truly special. I would absolutely recommend staying here if you're in the Shenandoah Valley area.

Charming Place, Comfortable Stay…read more We enjoy stays at both chains and independent hotels/motels, just do a lot of research to ensure a solid, restful stay at either. This piqued our interest as the longest continuously run motel and it lived up to expectations of being charmingly quirky while also very comfortable -- plus, proving to be easy to access as a quick pit stop. Spouse & I agreed when checking out that we wished we were staying longer, to get to enjoy the surprisingly spacious sitting room and glassed-in porch -- we stayed in room #15 / Bernstein and recommend it to both couples and small families. The bed was cushy and my husband slept later than his norm, always a good sign for bed comfort. It is higher than average, so I took advantage of the provided step to hop in/out. Because the tavern is onsite, there were additional bathrooms handy downstairs when ours was occupied. As noted in our welcome sheet, water took a few minutes to warm up. So if showering and in a rush, run it first for 3-5 minutes while doing other prep. But hot water arrives and pressure was excellent. The rooms were spotless, though of course tiles and other fixtures are vintage and show age -- it's a historic landmark. We also wish we could have stayed longer to take advantage of the porch rockers and both the tavern or (intriguingly combined) Irish-Mexican restaurant on premises. There appears to be patio seating in back, so ask if it's associated with hotel or dining, if looking for other outdoor space. Indoors, there are public spaces (two parlors plus other spots -- it's a rambling building!) with books and a checkerboard handy. Maybe more amenities but we ran out of time to explore. It's not a B&B -- there's just a stocked Keurig in the lobby and some packaged snacks and bottled water (free but donations welcomed). But if the Tavern is closed, as it was on our Memorial Dat visit, there's a small coffee shop just a half-block away, serving breakfast late as well as some sandwiches and bowls, plus good teas & coffees. Incredibly friendly staff. Looked like a few other dining options nearby plus historic sites and walking trails. We arrived very late, and management is not onsite at that hour, but instructions for arrival were provided, comprehensive and very easy to follow. Staff on site in am were very pleasant and helpful. Tip: If arriving late & lugging a ton of luggage, ask which rooms are closest to the late-night entrance. Number 15 is on the far side and up a flight of stairs -- fine for us with just overnight totes & computer bags but just something to keep in mind if you have a lot to unload. Overall, an enthusiastic thumbs-up. It looks like it would be a fun, relaxing hub for a weekend escape. But also great as a highway stop, as it is just a few minutes' drive from the exit.

From the moment you walk in, the warm lighting and calm, elegant setting create a true retreat feeling--relaxing, intimate, and perfectly set up for an unforgettable dinner. We started with the baked brie, and it was the perfect opener. Warm, creamy, and beautifully rich, it had that comforting, indulgent feel without being too heavy. It was the kind of appetizer that makes you pause after the first bite and think, "Okay, this is going to be special." We also shared a salad that was far better than any "starter salad" has a right to be. The greens were crisp and fresh, but the real surprise was the croutons--light, buttery, and so tender they practically melted in your mouth. Every bite felt balanced, simple in the best way, and clearly made with care. For the main course, we ordered the chicken under brick and the scallops risotto, and both were genuinely memorable. The chicken under brick had a beautifully crisp exterior, with juicy, tender meat underneath--full of flavor and cooked exactly right. The scallops were seared perfectly, with that delicate golden crust and soft, buttery center. Paired with the creamy risotto, it felt luxurious and comforting at the same time. It was the kind of dish you keep talking about afterward because it is that good. Dessert somehow raised the bar even more. The chocolate tart was rich, smooth, and deeply satisfying--pure indulgence. The fruit tart was fresh, bright, and perfectly balanced, with a delicate crust and vibrant flavors that made it feel light and refreshing after such an incredible meal. Both desserts were truly delicious and the perfect ending. The service matched the food and atmosphere: welcoming, attentive, and genuinely kind. Every interaction made the night feel even more special, and it never felt rushed--just warm and thoughtful from start to finish. And a special mention to our waitress, Rae--the most pleasant, kind, accommodating, and positive soul you can find. Her smiling welcome immediately put us at ease and made us feel so happy to be there. She truly elevated the entire experience. If I can give this place seven stars, I would!
