This place is not too far from my apartment so I brought it here to fix a suspension issue. I paid near $700 for new control arms and ball joints. These should last several years, but about 14 months after installation, they broke down. I don't drive much except to work so it wasn't from extreme use or anything like that. They claim the company must had sent them bad parts. After much begging and pleading, the man behind the desk said he was able to get the parts replaced since he was able to use the under 30,000 mile warranty since the owner refuse to wiggle on his one year warranty regardless if it was "bad parts" or not. Again, these parts should last five plus years. I was told I would still have to pay another $200 for labor as it was essentially "too bad and not his problem" (owner's words) or else they wouldn't give me the replacement parts to take somewhere else. I had no choice but to let them fix it again or be out my original $700. So now I'm $900 in... Fast forward to a month after they "fixed" it, and the same issue (knocking noise, etc) is back. I took it to two places for a diagnosis, and both said my suspension is bad/wasn't fixed properly if it was fixed at all. Cool heat is refusing to fix the issue without charging me full price yet again since they think they did me a favor by "fixing" it the second time, and even though these are "new" parts that are breaking down, he said I already used my warranty on the first ones. New parts don't break down twice. Read the other reviews on these guys. I wish I had. Steer clear of this hack job repair shop. read more

I took my car in to get the evaporator fixed, I was told it would take 6 hours. Dropped my car off Monday night and didn't get my car until Thursday afternoon - that's ridiculous. Also, upon receiving my car I noticed a new crack in my front window (they have to remove my dashboard to get to the part needing fixing). I reach out to them to fix the issue, and have been getting the runaround for the past week. Beyond frustrating, still waiting on a response from management. All in all, don't take your car here. We paid to have it fixed again and a few months later we are having the same problem again. When we called they said they wouldn't honor the warranty and were quite rude about it. Unbelievable. For starters, they tell you it will take a couple of hours to fix and then @ the end of the day, nothing is done. Then they give you a price quote and all of a sudden they increase the price $160 more with no additional work needed. Thereafter, they proceed to tell me that they did not put it in writing ..... and while your trying to make some sense out of the situation, they hang up on you !!!! Totally unprofessional. I took my vintage car for an AC recharge (estimate $110), which was supposed to be done that afternoon. After looking over the car, they called me back to say that it needed a new hose and new compressor. They told me they would look for the parts and get back to me. The next day, when I had not heard from them, I went to pick up my car and they refused to provide it to me - insisting that they would find the parts. Despite asking several times to take the car home with me, they told me it was not possible. I called again the next day, and finally on the fourth day demanded that they close up the car and return it to me. When I arrived, they had "changed a hose" on the car - and held me up for a $380 before they would return the car to me (a quick internet search indicates the hose is ~$20). When questioned about it, the Manager Paul indicated that it was a fair rate. So net-net: my car still doesn't have working AC, they took the compressor out of the car without my permission, and I have a sky high bill. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE. read more

Scott was a real lifesaver! My car battery died this past January and I happened past Cool Heat and stopped in to see if they could help me jump start my car. Scott ordered a battery for me, walked down the street to pick my car up so I could stay in the building with my baby, and then installed the battery. Honestly I knew my battery wasnt going to last much longer so I had already priced them and so I know what Scott charged was a good price. I went there a few months ago because my check engine light was on. They charged me $50.00 to use some "special equipment" in order to diagnose my car with a leak. They gave me a quote, but wouldn't let me leave with the paperwork that had the quote and problem on it. I had a feeling they weren't being honest with me so I did not proceed with the work. It's been months and since then, my check engine light has not come on again, not once. I also witnessed the gentleman behind the desk do a Xanax drug deal with some woman that came into the building and asked to speak with him. This place is a TOTAL scam. I knew exactly what I needed- an evaporator temperature sensor (I had it diagnosed at a dealership). That guy Scott told me that it was not what I needed and said it was the condenser that had a leak. He said "I would hate to see you spend all of that money and not have it fixed." Charged me $500.00 and the AC still does not work. I tried to get a refund and the owner refused to speak with me. REFUSED to speak to me. These people are ruthless scam artists. They should not be in business. Also- they don't take appointments ever. It's first come first served always. They keep your car for an entire day and it's not even fixed. read more

I took my car in there because it was overheating. Cool Heat said I needed a new radiator. Not cheap - ouch! My car isn't that old, do I decided to get a second opinion. Guess what?? It was just a stuck valve on the gauge - a very cheap fix. How could this be?! Hmmmm. Never will I try and go here again. They tried to pull the same "the compressor leaks really bad and needs to be replaced" crap on me. Quoted me over $1500 to replace everything because it was so bad. Couldn't afford to have that done but had taken it to another shop who tested it and had no leaks. They replace what needed to be replaced so that I could convert from R12 to the 134 refrigerant and it has worked perfectly since and for far less money. All I needed was an AC recharge, but these guys informed me of the "illegal" use of my current AC. I guess a law was passed a few years back & that there is some new type of refrigerant that is cleaner for the environment. Since my car is older, he explained that I needed to have my AC unit converted to accomodate this new refrigerant. Nicest guy in the world. Cool Heat was able to fix an issue with my cooling system for $700 less than quoted by another recommended mechanic. My car started overheating while I was visiting relatives in Hinsdale so I took it to my SIL's mechanic first who said I needed a new water pump among other things. I had it towed to Cool Heat because Scott has done good work for me before and he was able to correctly diagnose the problem (not the water pump) and fix everything for far less!! So glad I made the decision to tow it to Cool Heat! read more

After being told my Car-X that my air conditioner could not be fix I took it over to Cool Heat Auto Radiator. They fix my car and it works great now! They are very nice let me drop my car off the day before and pick it up the next day when it was completed. Actually had to bring my car in twice an both times they took responsibility for my car and the repairs. I will not go back to Car-X and will have them do my oil changes. I went in to get my A/C fix, it was just blowing out HOT air in July and I don't know what was wrong with it. My AC was blowing hot air, took the truck into Cool Heat. They used their equipment to quickly diagnose the problem and instantly knew there was a clog in my system. They showed me the clogged "orifice tube" and replaced it with a fresh one. Recharged my system, and had me blowing ice cold air again. This was on an RV system, so these guys can work on anything from a regular car to huge RV air conditioners. I was very impressed by the diagnosis process. I like supporting local businesses, i have taken two vehicles there and am satisfied with the work done and explanation of work. It does take some time though if the vehicle is older and takes time to locate the parts. When a mechanic is working with such a variety of vehicles on todays market and the customer brings in the car and says it doesn't do something, a mechanic tries his or her best. I do like that there individual bays there not just a cluster auto shop on easton avenue or something. Lets support local guys and try to explain as much as possible as we know what are vehicles are doing, mechanics aren't mindreaders. read more

I took my car here per recommendation from Ashland Tire. I needed to get my A/C fixed. For $100, they did a dye test & recharged my A/C. They weren't able to identify a leak and asked that I run the A/C for few days and bring the car back if the A/C dies. They also charged me $35 to install my passenger side mirror. Initially they quoted me $50 & whey I said ''no, thanks', they said they already installed it w/out my consent. So I accepted their 2nd offer of $35, which I believe is still too expensive. Three days after the A/C charge, it completely died. I took the car back & they recharged the freon & this time, I found the problem. Not sure why they couldn't find it 3 days prior. They said I needed a new air compressor, hose, drier & a filter. With installation, it would cost me $665. But they said the good news is that they won't charge me for the recharge since I already paid for that 3 days ago. I decided to get a 2nd opinion & took it to another mechanice near my home. He took a look at it & within minutes told me the problem isn't the compressor. He said I need a new hose. He quoted me $260 (parts & labor). I've had the car for over a week now & the A/C works great. Maybe it's just my experience with Cool Heat, but the mechanics & front desk service didn't come across as very trust-worthy. They even spoke poorly of Ashland Tire even though they were recommended by Ashland. I would say avoid this shop & find someone else. read more

When I originally took my suv to ''Cool Heat" at 2859 W. Montrose, Chicago, IL 60618 to have my auto air conditioner repaired due to the fact that it was blowing warm air, I was told the freon is leaking out of the rear air conditioner line and the repair would be "under $200". Upon completion of the A/C line repair, I was handed a bill for $366.58 which I had no choice but to pay. I have been back to Cool Heat several times since then due to the fact that freon has continued to leak out of the system inspite of the A/C line repair. The A/C is still blowing warm air. Finally on my last visit to Cool Heat with my A/C unit blowing nothing but warm, I was told that my A/C unit is "probably leaking from the rear evaporator". I was then told If I wanted the evaporator checked for leaks, I had to disassemble it myself, and then it would cost me an additional $850.00! When I asked for my original $366.58 refunded so I could just take my suv to the dealer to get it done right, I was told no. Bottom line, spent $366.58 to fix freon leak, A/C unit still leaks freon and am now forced to take vehicle else ware for repair. Stay Away! read more

I took my car here to get a new transmission. I openly admit that I don't know much about cars and that's why when my car started jolting when I shifted I took it to the shop. I told them what was going on and that I also needed an oil change. At first the people there were very nice and helped me out with a ride home. Within a few hours they called and explained to me that I needed a new transmission. It was $75 to drop the trans to assess what was going on. The man on the phone said he would waive the $75 fee to drop the trans and also give me the oil change for free. He told me this because I needed a new transmission and he would waive this if I said I would go with the new trans. I asked for a total and he gave me one I was satisfied with and also told me that the rebuilt trans comes with a 2 year warranty. They told me that if anything happens with the transmission within the next 2 years it would be covered. I was fine with this so I told them to go ahead with the new rebuilt trans. This was Wednesday around noon and the guy told me that the car would be ready to pick up by close of business on Thursday which would be 6pm. I waited for a call and at 5:56pm on Thursday I called the shop and they told me nonchalantly that the car wasn't done. So they said they would call me the next day when it was done. This was Friday of the 4th of July weekend and I had planned to go out of town starting on Friday night. I waited for a call and finally I called them around noon and they THEN informed me that they were waiting on another shop to give them a call back because they were waiting on a "few" parts and that after they got those parts it would be at least 2 more hours of work on the car before it was ready. So they said they would call me when it was ready. I wasn't happy but couldn't do anything about my car not being done. I finally got a call at 5:40pm telling me that they were done and test driving my car and I could come by and get it. I went immediately (since they close at 6pm). When I got there the guy Phil who helped me originally was not there and when they showed me my bill they tried to overcharge me on my original quote. They tried to charge for the oil change and the $75. They also had on the receipt that there was a 12 month or 6,000mile warranty when I was told a 2 year warranty and was never told anything about mileage. So I told the guy at the counter what was promised to me and after some back and forth and him telling me that this is a lot cheaper than buying a new car he changed the warranty to 24 months but refused to change the mileage! They made me feel like such an idiot for taking my car there. I finally paid and got in my car to drive home. On the ride home I was fuming and to make matters even worse they had changed all my preset radio stations to music I would never listen to. I will never bring my car back. read more

Thank you Scott n technicians. After Five visits to the Chevy car dealership, $500 in inspection fees and told there was nothing wrong and anti-freeze Reservoir every three days. Cool heat found the problem within two hrs set up up an appointment , order the part. They replaced the damaged part , and installed the new one . I no longer have to deal with the anti-freeze all over my driveway as well as the Idiots at the dealership. read more

I have a '92 mazda protege that needed the fuel tank replaced and I was referred to them by Marvin's Auto Shop (another place I recommend you go to). They let me bring in my own tank and just charged me for labor. They did the job in the amount of time they promised as well as threw in some parts i wasn't able to find for free. The owner even mentioned that they are very willing to work with me and my budget the next time I needed to get my car fixed. This Cool Heat shop specializes in Automotive Air Conditioning service, Radiator and Heating, Electrical Diagnosis, Front End and Engine Work. However they also do regular things like Brakes and Tune Ups. I went to them, however, for their expertise in automotive air conditioning and I was greatly rewarded. My air conditioning had stopped working about 3 years ago. I had a couple shops look at it and they told me I was going to need a compressor. Since this would run me at least $800 for this part, I waited to have the service done. When I did attempt to fix the air conditioning, the local auto repair I had been using was not able to get it working. They researched and found that someone had taken out relay connections that were needed for my air conditioning to work and they were unable to find the part for my car. After so many years, I could not go back to find out what repair shop had done this so I could be compensated. It didn't look good at this point. I knew I was going to have to find an air conditioning automotive specialist to see if I could get this fixed. Scott Nei, the manager at Cool Heat identified the part I needed, and that I could get it from Honda for $900. It this point this was not an option for me, so Scott ordered the part from an auto salvage yard, but they did not know what was needed and sent the wrong part twice. It took a few days, but Scott was willing to go to the auto salvage yard on his own time and acquired the relay connection parts for me for $25, that no one else could find. And the guys got my air conditioning working great. The guys stay pretty busy here, but I was treated like a valuable person here. They went out of their way to help me. It is not often that we find this exceptional customer service, in our busy world. I recommend them without hesitation, and I will seek their services out again the next time it is needed. read more

The yelp template screamed at the one star ("Eek! Methinks not!") but I have good reasons. One, I'm a senior citizen. Two, I'm a lady of the little old type. Three, I drive a '98 VW and thus am easily distinguished from Barbara Walters or some other little old lady richer than I. And these guys tried to rip me off. My ac blew hot air, and I stopped there. They said I needed a thousand bucks worth of work--new compresser and all of its accessories, the new valve, the new dyer (whatever that is). They would not even add more freon, as I had requested. And I waited two hours in their absolutely filthy 'waiting room' while they conducted an apparently useless test on an expensive machine that cost me fifty bucks. But I did not fall for it, and took my Golf to my main guys, Speedline on Damen (I didn't go there first because I was thinking, 'cheaper freon with specialists' etc.), who checked everything out, said my compressor was fine, first-rate, the car just needed freon. My little car is back to being as cold as a 'frig and about the same size. So as far as I'm concerned, one star is about right, and I'm glad I'm an old lady who knows how to Yelp. I've been a customer of Cool Heat for over 3 years up until a couple of weeks ago. The manager"s name at that location was Fillipe who was an outstanding manager, extremely knowledgeable,and knew how to treat his customers and keep them coming back. The owner of the company for some reason sent a relative of his named Richard to that location to oversee the operation. A couple of weeks ago, when I brought my car in to have some work done, Richard, who is an obnoxious person with a big mouth, informed me that Fillipe no longer worked there and "if I was not there to spend money I should leave the premises". This Richard accused Fillipe of doing work for me on the side which is totally untrue. I've spent a small fortune having all my mechanical work done at Cool Heat over 3 years, and Richard had no right talking to me like that. Well, his big mouth lost me as a customer, and I understand he chased away many other good customers as well. In addition, he lost Fillipe who in my opinion would be very difficult to replace. read more
