New Year, New Yelp? New Me? So I've been tracking Cooked Buffalo on their Instagram, I remember when another meal prep service opened a store front in Kenmore and EVERYONE in my previous office was heating up their meals for lunch. I was interested but not jumping on the train, a year or so later and a new year resolution..... Cooked Buffalo is a meal prep service located in Buffalo, they offer a decent size menu and from I can tell it changes periodically. The menu is available for download on their website and is either breakfast or lunch/dinner. The meals have cute names based upon what their theme is, Thai Tanic, Wakey, Wakey, El Chapo & Ma, the Meatloaf are a few examples. Below each description of the meal the calorie, protein, carb and fat content is listed. Ordering is easy enough, I did it on phone. You simply fill out a form checking a radial button for the number of meals you are ordering and list the names of the meals you want and if an option to include rice or not. Once submitted you get a confirmation email confirming receipt and advising you will be billed shortly. The billing is easy enough too, I received an email shortly from PayPal to simply and easily pay my invoice and BAM, it is done. Delivery was easy enough too, I'm within the 10 mile radius so my delivery is free. I received a text message the night before reminding me and another text letting me know my bag was here, nicely placed on my porch. I've already tried the Wakey, Wakey and damn it was pretty good. I always love a little more salt and pepper but the point of this (trial) for me is to eat better. But I have to say I am pretty satisfied and am looking forward to a week of lunches for the coming week. One thing I wished that had come with my meal was the calorie breakdown in the bag or in the container label and heating instructions but both of those are small compared to what appears to be a great value. I used this service once and thought things were A-OK, the delivery process and communication was 5-stars. Ordering was fairly easy too. The price isn't too bad, $7 for each meal; all in all, not bad. Where things fell apart for my wife and I were the meals themselves. Some of them were great, while others were dry and severely lacking in protein. I'm open to updating this review if we try it again, but for now the consistency of this service wasn't there for us. The Jackie Chan/salmon meal was a bit disappointing, but some of the Indian dishes they had came through well with the taste and curry. I mean, ultimately Cooked Buffalo is for meal prep and it does make the week a little easier for a lower cost solution if you're unwilling to do it yourself. Give it a shot--don't let me tell you it's good or bad, but in my experience I just found it to be AOK. read more

It's been several years since I did Promised Land and I will tell you why. I do Porter Farms and…read moreNative Offerings every year, so I think I have good experience for comparing. Promised Land is by far the most expensive CSA in the area. It was the most expensive when I first did it and when I thought about joining again two years later, they had DOUBLED their prices. Compare this to Porter Farms which has raised their price less than 10% total in the last 6 years. PL sells out, so it is pure supply and demand, but I would never pay that much. In my view, a CSA should be less expensive than the farmers market. You prepay, you take the risk that this year could be a bad crop, and you don't get to choose what you want. Pro: They have fruit. Their blueberries are the best I have ever had in my life. Con: They have fruit, It doesn't keep well. Sometime I would pick it up, right on time, take it straight home, and the berries already had mold. Pro: You get some fancy and unique items you won't find in other shares. Con: You get less volume than any other share. Pro: They have potatoes and all different colors of them. It was so fun getting these. You got lots of other fun things you might not buy at the farmers market, (mostly because they are so expensive). Con: It's not actually cheaper than going to the Farmers Market, so you could just pick out what you want and as much as you want each week instead. Pro: It comes pre-boxed. You don't have to remember to bring your own bags or worry about the bag it's in tearing. Con: You are expected the bring the box back next week. Pro: There are multiple pick up sites. Con: The different sites don't seem to be even. I did it the same year as a friend who had a Tuesday pickup in Amherst and I had a Thursday pickup in Buffalo. She often had things I never got but the reverse was never true. All in all, Promised Land is a fun fancy share for high income folks who don't want to bothered going to the farmers market or hate the idea of getting "too much" produce.

I am sad that this week marks the last week of my farm share but my, was it memorable. I was also very fortunate to have been able to go out to Oles Family Farm and visit the family that worked so hard to fed me and other families all season long. What an incredible, lovely family. I feel honored to have eaten their goods and support their operation. This is how everyone should eat. You can taste the difference. I can't wait to do the farm share next year. Until then , bring on the root veggies!

My partner loved the bagel. We both enjoyed our afternoon coffee. The space is beautiful and cozy, it would be the perfect place to come and read or knock out some work. They have completely non-plastic to go cups which are unique looking and we loved the extra effort they put into sustainability. They have bags of their used coffee grounds for free if you need to add to your compost pile or whatever needs you might have. 10/10, will be back!
