TLDR: Great food, friendly staff, clean dining area, and unbeatable value. A must stop for any Cookout fan or anyone craving quality fast food at a fair price. As a longtime Cookout fan who first discovered the chain during late night college runs in North Carolina, I always make a point to stop by whenever I'm near one of their northernmost locations in Fredericksburg, VA. Over the years, Cookout has come a long way from the plain white Styrofoam trays to the new branded paper boxes with vent holes, which do a great job of keeping fried foods crispy and fresh. I've dined inside this location about half a dozen times and have always had a great experience. The restaurant is consistently clean, the staff are friendly, and service is quick. My go to order is the Cookout Tray with a big double burger prepared Cookout Style, which means Carolina chili, slaw, cheese, and raw onions. I usually get fries and onion rings as my sides. Even though the tray used to be $3.99 back in my college days, the current price of $6.99 still feels like a great value considering the portion size and quality. On my most recent visit, I was extra hungry and decided to try a second mini tray for $5.99. I went with two corndogs as the main and added cheese bites and hush puppies as sides, plus a Snickers milkshake to top it off. Everything came out hot, fresh, and exactly how I remember it. The milkshake was thick and creamy, just the way it should be, and I was absolutely stuffed by the end. Cookout's big double burgers, whether you get them Cookout Style or Cheddar Style with grilled onions, cheese sauce, and bacon, are easily some of the best fast food burgers for the price. Between the generous portions, variety of options, and late night hours (many locations stay open until 3 a.m.), Cookout continues to deliver on both taste and value. Overall, this Fredericksburg location has never disappointed me and remains one of my favorite stops when I'm craving a classic Cookout meal. Whenever I'm in Fredericksburg, I'll stop for some Cook Out. Every time I've visited this location, the staff is always pleasant, friendly and polite and today's visit was no different. I went inside to place my order and it wasn't busy so there no line. Inside was clean and orderly. I ordered a bbq tray with a corn dog and walking taco with jalapeños as my sides and a Cheerwine to drink. The menagerie of menu items is impressive and the fact that corn dogs and walking tacos are offered as sides is amazing on so many levels! (The walking taco is not listed on the online menu but they do have it!) I always order the bbq sandwich with bbq sauce on the side and in addition to the hot sauce and coleslaw it normally comes with. Cook Out is a staple when it comes to cheap, quick fast food. I honestly wish there were more in my area but whenever I go to one, it's always a good time. So I'm down here in Fredericksburg to visit friends and thought it was a good idea to try and get some Cook Out before the hang out begins. I get a Cook Out Tray with a big double burger with all the toppings I want on there. Then I get to pick two sides which are usually fries and hush puppies. I get a drink and knowing that Cook Out has Cheerwine, I immediately go for it. The Big Double Burger, just your average burger that tastes like what the name implies; a cook out. Fries were okay but they were lukewarm. The hush puppies tasted a bit drier knowing they weren't freshly made but still was enjoyable to eat. And Cheerwine? Honestly it's one of the better sodas I would personally get again and again. My adventure didn't stop there as I wanted dessert. Can't leave Cook Out without a nice milkshake. I got my favorite; Mint Chocolate Chip Milkshake. It looks the part, tastes the part with a generous amount to go through. I did not finish this right away, I was there for another half an hour trying to finish this. It's always worth it every time. It was 1:28PM - wasn't busy at all, so we decided we would eat in. This is an average fast food joint. The deal of a meal (burger/chicken sandwich) plus two sides is pretty great, only $6.99. But the sides are pretty small and I wish they had been a tad bigger. What we got: Spicy chicken sandwich - it was subpar, I wish mine had more mayo as it was a tad dry. The chicken was not spicy as all, part of me wonders of they got the order wrong. The big double - bun was dry, meat overcooked, and vegetables were meh. Oreo peanut butter m&m milkshake - it was good. The milkshakes are thicker, which is nice. But also nothing extraordinarily special. Strawberry caramel milkshake - my partner did not like it. I thought it was fine. Nothing special. The caramel wasn't mixed in though. The sides we got: White cheddar cheese curds - the best side by far, but very small servings Walkin Taco - I did not know this would be a Doritos bag with taco toppings crushed up and mixed inside. So I was a bit disappointed to discover that on getting my meal. I can easily make this on my own and would never spend money for someone else to make it for me. Corn dog - tasted like any old corn dog you buy from the freezer section of a grocery store. Fries - nothing special (but they were hot and fresh, so thank goodness for that). I visited the Plank Road establishment on July 5; I ordered a chili cheeseburger and fries, well i was left disappointed. My fries were cold and there was chili om half of my burger. The only enjoyable item was the cheerwine soda. I was quite surprised by this as I visited another cookout and the food was hot, fresh and delicious. Damn, I wish this chain existed north of the Mason-Dixon line. On a trek down to South Carolina, I stopped for lunch at this Fredericksburg outpost of Cook Out. In these pandemic times, service was drive-thru only. No matter: there's no shortage of eats to chose from, ranging from burgers to chicken sandwiches to bbq, and at least 40 flavours of milkshakes. Maximize your bargain with a tray: a sandwich, two sides, and a drink for under $7. I snagged a tray with a bbq sandwich, fried okra, and slaw and a bottle of water. The sandwich was Carolina style pulled pork, soaked in a tangy vinegar sauce. It's not the best pulled pork you'll find by any stretch but filling and better than most you'll find up north. Look like the NC favor is slowly moving up to VA. They are the real cheap fast food place. Not sure if I can call them cheap, but comparing them to NoVA and other well known fast food. This is the place to go. Service is fast and no BS type of just fast food. You are in and out in less than 10 minutes. Ooooh where do I begin? My partner and I decided to grab a quick bite to eat so we went through the drive thru. As soon as I get up to the box I cannot understand what is being said because the worker was talking too fast and cut his mic off too soon so I started giving my order which I was quickly interrupted and asked to repeat what I just said. I kindly obliged and finished informing the worker of what I wanted and was starting to relay what my partner wanted. Well, I guess the manager had lost her patience and started yelling over the guy (while he was still talking) taking my order being rude and cutting me off when I repeated exactly what she asked not knowing she didn't get my first item until I asked what she had and she rudely told me to start again so I did. By the time I got up to the window I felt so disrespected by the woman that I asked for the manager (which happened to be the woman yelling over the order box). She came over trying to blame the worker saying she was training him and she kept saying she never got rude... well Erica, why did you get so cocky when I asked for your name? You, Erica, stood there being rude, continuously, and kept saying it was your trainees fault that there was an issue with taking my order at the box. You as a manager are responsible for everything and deescalating situations; not making them worse. This experience has left a bad taste in my mouth and my friends and I will never frequent your location again. I was super excited to get to stop by this place on the way home. I mean I've heard all about it from friends or online and needed to see what the hype was all about. We pulled up to the drive thru in a Wednesday night about 7 cars deep which was surprising unless it was a Chick-Fil-A. I got a 1/4 burger (steak style) tray with sides of fries and a corn dog(?!) with a huge tea (big as hell). Burger was thick and juicy, better then most fast food. Loved the corn dog as an option and that alone could bring me back. Fries were ok, little soggy. Tea was nice and sweet, probably could cause me some problems down the road but it was hot that day so, very necessary. Loved the sips of the peanut butter fudge shake I got, thick and huge peanut butter flavor. HOLY SHIT! YOU WONT BELIEVE WHAT I JUST WITNESSED. THEY HAD THE 85 BEARS WORKING TODAY. My two friends and I came in and while we were ordering a bus load of kids came in. Without hesitation they set conditions and sequenced events to successfully tackle the challenge of serving 20 plus people. The heavy set African American gentleman took charge like Tom Brady. Rushing to the register and relieving the lady telling her to help in the back. He took all the orders without a mistake. The bus pulled out at the same time we did with a group of 3. It was beautiful. THE CRAZIEST PART IS THEY STILL YOOK CARE OF A FULL DRIVE THRU. Special shout-out to the lady making shakes. Honestly, whats not to love about Cook Out. Delicious fast food cooked to perfection for only $5. There are a lot of different food items on the menu and my favorite is a Big double tray with chicken nuggets, cajun fries, and a fruit punch no ice. When I am in the mood for some yummy dessert I order cheesecake with the topping on the side, or I go for a delicious cheesecake or Oreo milkshake. There are over 40 different milkshake flavors and there is even a seasonal eggnog one. I decided to try Cook Out here in Fredericksburg stopped in for a late lunch on a Sunday and was surprised at how many people were here. Dogs are small, but grilled at least. Got a bacon-cheese dog and a mustard-chili-onion-slaw dog. Also ordered onion rings and a chocolate Oreo shake. Onion rings were mediocre at best-not crispy and they seemed previously frozen. The dogs weren't bad, but there was too much onion and slaw on the one dog...made a mess (but tasted great). I really enjoyed the flavor of the chili. The bacon cheese dog (advertised as cheddar) didn't do it for me. I always prefer a Cheez Whiz type of cheese on my dogs, but this was a gloppy, even MORE artificially flavored cheese product that, in combination with the bacon, totally overwhelmed the flavor of the dog. The saving grace for this place today was a GREAT milkshake. I probably can't recommend the dogs, but would like to came back for a burger. read more

The food quality is worse each time I visit. I visited this establishment today and the food was average. The burgers were put together sloppy and did not taste fresh. The fries were cold as well. One of the drink machine did not have ice and the other one gave really weak drinks( syrup was really light). Went to bathroom and it was dirty, the whole restaurant appeared to be dirty. The kitchen floor looked like it was not touched all day. The front counter person did not understand English very well. Great eat-in Cook Out! Not too busy for a Monday evening, close to the dinner rush. We were the only people there besides maybe one or two trickling in and out. They were ready to take our order right when we walked through the door, but did take longer than your usual Cook Out to get us the food. I LOVE the Chicken Quesadillas here. Highly recommend! I always go with a Big Double burger tray, 2 quesadillas on the side and an additional side of fries. That's definitely the way to go. Try them and let me know what you think! Well...I give this place 3 stars due to the newness, and cleanliness of the place, and friendliness of the staff. The food? Less than to be desired... I ordered the chopped pork sandwich with onion rings and hush puppies as sides. The sandwich was just okay - kind of reminded me of a "manwich" or "sloppy joe" from back in the day - and the onion rings seemed a bit over cooked along with the hush puppies as well. The corn dog was standard but good, while the onion rings were rather large and crispy. My large Cheerwine tied everything together and made for a great late night snack. NOTE: Toppings cost extra, as do specialty drinks like floats. Cappuccino Shake and Chocolate Malt Shake ($2.99/ea): I was here with a couple others, and we came away impressed by the shakes here. At $2.99/ea, they're huge, not overly sweet, creamy, rich, and had a great thick consistency. There are more than 40 flavors to pick from.
