The menu is very swish, featuring dishes such as seared scallops, petit sale, smoked roe and salmon blini, with horseradish cream and gressingham duck breast, caramelised red chicory, with hazelnut dressing, but considering how good it is, it is extremely reasonably priced - only £15.50 for two courses, £19.50 for three. I had hamhock and pickled walnut terrine to start, followed by guineafowl and dumplings, and finished with a salt caramel chocolate pudding which was damn good. The service was attentive, and the presentation of the food was great, my terrine came attractively arranged on a slate platter. I didn't see any of the rooms, but if you are looking for a place to go for a special meal I would strongly recommend Pelham House. The garden has a slightly Mediterranean feel with lots of sculptures and some palms, and a dovecot adds charm to the courtyard car park, although it seems to house a rather lonely solitary dove.

They don't have a paper menu, just a blackboard on which the day's offerings are listed, so I took a photo of that with my smartphone and we looked at it in comfort at our table. We had some mackerel on beetroot and carrot vegetables, tomatoes and ricotta, VERY delicious kerala chicken and an equally delicious mixed leaves and vegetable salad. The kofta balls were good, but relied for their taste on the very good sauce rather than having any intrinsic flavour. The skinny fries with aioli were very good indeed. We washed it all down with a bottle of the house white, a very good Falanghina, and without us asking they put water on the table - I wish all restaurants did this as a matter of course. Other dishes on the table included paneer and garlic mushroom and everyone was happy. For main course, my brother chose a vegetarian thali - a wonderful dish that allowed him to sample three different curries along with numerous side dishes. My boyfriend and I shared the jeera chicken and the lamb lucknovi. The lamb was really tasty but a little oily but the chicken was unfortunately a quite dry, the only reason I have knocked off a star. And I think that would be about my assessment of the Hotel as a whole. I haven't stayed here, and I haven't eaten here, but I have drunk here before, so that's the best of the three in so many ways. Back to what I was saying...The White Hart is a really nice, because it is genuinely old (16th century) and it is a proper hotel, so you feel snug and comfortable, yet it's also weird because you sense it's not as good as you could imagine it being, and perhaps it's a little faulty towers (e.g. the weird little radiator). There are photos to show their style. We enjoyed the food, and the wine from next door (Erawan is a BYO restaurant), not to mention its proximity to Lewes railway station. Two of us ate Thai duck, Vegetable Tempura, Red Thai Curry and Pad Thai, in no particular order (see the photos). The main downside was two 'jack-in-a-box' women crowding us by non-step texting, even whilst eating, and leaping up every few minutes for a confab in the corridor, plus a slightly disruptive but pleasant party on our other side moving between two tables.
