Kensington Market

Do you love junk? Do you love to walk around and look and touch old objects that you can't believe…read moreare still around in the original package? This place is crazy. There are vintage items, new items, things that you don't have any idea how long they have been there. Then strangely enough, there were shoes and clothes in the back. I bought the cutest little turquoise flats. I know I stayed in there an hour nosing around, it is the kind of place that my husband would have passed out if he had to hang out in there with me. It is on the list when I return to Toronto. Have I told you lately how much I heart Toronto?

I hope Sasmart lasts forever. It's clearly been around for a long time. This may be apparent from…read moreits somewhat-dated exterior, but mostly because of the assortment of surprisingly affordable great-quality, new-vintage house- and cookware. Agree with the previous 5-star reviews - it's a hard place to sum up in a sentence, because you really don't know what oddball kitschy gift or really useful gadget you'll end up finding. I've bought really cheap unused vintage wrapping paper and 2B pencils, a huge plastic washing/ bathing tub, new glass and wood storage canisters made in France (for an incredible deal), and a kitsch stationery holder shaped like a lion for a friend's birthday. You will find fantastic deals here on great-quality stuff - much cheaper than nearby carefully-curated kitchen stores. Because much if not most of the wares here are unused vintage, a lot of them are made in places like Canada/France/Italy and before everything became disposable. The folks that own/run the place are very friendly, and have a sweet old pug that sometimes sleeps behind the counter. I've generally stayed out of the clothing section, but thanks to a previous reviewer, it looks like I'll have to check it out! Sasmart sits opposite grungy Bellevue Square park, just off the beaten path of Augusta. I highly suggest that you pay a visit next time you're in the market!

How could I NOT go into this store!? Looks-wise it's just like the standard HomeGoods we're used to in the States... except its bigger and better. And really roomy. Sometimes these types of stores are so packed you can barely move around - not this location. Set in a lower level/basement like space it felt modern and comfortable. Walking in - I instantly wished I had brought an extra duffle bag. Between the aisles of pillows, the kitchen/dining section, and the picture frames - I was in heaven. Fortunately for Hubs they also have tons of furniture, so he was able to find a {super cute} chair up front to relax in while I wandered. B/c my luggage could not accommodate all that I had seen I settled on a really beautiful picture frame to commemorate our visit to Toronto. Check out was super easy - seeing as how they had several cashiers available. And my frame, after $$ conversion was only $7. Yay for HomeSense!

This is a mini update for the new store. They have half floor of this building to themselves now…read more The new space is bright and has an airy feel. An added cafe with a few seats as well. The menu at the cafe seemed limited though. What keeps me coming back is the unmatched selection especially towards the higher end of the market. The prices are competitive so that's a bonus. The service has been great so far with my dealings at this store. I usually visit this location to get ideas about those hard to buy for friends. Some brands worth mentioning are Alessi, Hermes, Versace by Rosenthal, Christophle etc. They have the most extensive selection for these brands I have encountered. If you like housewares this store is a must visit IMO. 4.5 stars.

I advised the cashier there's poop on the floor. 10 minutes passed, it was still on the floor. I advised another staff member who rudely responded to me and said "I know I know, we've already been told" then turned her back to me. I told her I'm trying to be nice and helping them avoid avoid a situation where people would step on it. She responded and was rude about it again. I asked to speak with a manager I was told the manager is on break. I walked away. Another 5 minutes passed same girl and the assistant manager proceeded to clean the poop. As they walked by I said "it's about time somebody attended to it." The assistant manager rudely responded, we didn't know and was very confrontational. I said I reported twice, how do you not know. I asked to speak to a manager above her, I was then told that there is no manager on duty. I left and called the store (905) 850-8131, the assistant manager answered. I asked to speak to a manager, she told me that no manager tonight and for the rest of the weekend. After a few words back and forth she hung up on me, accused me of being rude to her and her staff. I called back again, she was rude and she hung up again. Not very good customer service at all after trying to help them prevent customers from stepping on dog poop. I'll be reporting this to Corporate office.
