Passing through small-town America in one of the colder sites in the North. The folks here are pleasantly chipper and incredibly tolerant of this old man's rambling on. This spot has a calming, laid back charm that is incredibly relaxing. The light snow fall accompanied by the soft music create quite a feeling of nirvana. They offer a few decent crepes, breakfast sandwiches and other items, but the coffee creations and the atmosphere are why you come. It's pricey, but such it's the cost for the environment. There is noticeably a younger crowd in this house. More of a modern feel than the old, rickety traditional shops. Even the bathrooms are up to date and spotless. I am a big fan of Contast Coffee! I frequently travel to the area and we always stop here multiple times each trip! We frequently have our dogs with when we travel here, so it's nice that they have a patio area to allow our pups to be with us (when weather permits). It's also a family friendly, a great hangout space for socializing, and I feel it'd also be a great study/work environment as well. They have kind staff and also are happy to make substitutions to menu items to accommodate dietary restrictions. They have an incredible selection of coffee and specialty beverages. Cute decor and nicely modern laid out menu on the wall, that being said, I didn't see that a drink had almond milk in it and unfortunately didn't take a sip till I was outside... it was the worst almond milk I've ever had. Don't get almond milk and carefully read the menu! The hot chocolate my SO got was amazingly delicious, 9/10 for him and 10/10 for me. There is a cI tree rock garden just next door to wander around in while you sip your coffee and the bathrooms were clean! Parking is just street parking, so kind of limited if it's a busy time of day. I'll definitely have to try this place again when I'm in the area next. read more

Visiting the area for a few days, we tripped into Contrast Coffee. We were wandering around in the down town area and as the rain was just starting, we decided to duck into the shop to try to miss the rain. And we were glad we did. . The staff was super friendly and helpful as we ordered. We decided on the Ipsento iced latte and a hot Almond Maple. Although we had just eaten earlier, we decided the blueberry cheese crepe and Italian crepe sounded too good to pass up. Both drinks were tasty, but the heat in the Ipsento was a little more obvious than we liked. Both crepes were delicious and we would definitely order there again, as there were plenty of other tasty looking items on the menu. As a side note, they do have gluten free bread available as well as several gluten free baked goods. The shop itself is light and airy and displays local artwork which rotates monthly. It is for sale so if you see something you like, you can purchase it! Bathrooms were unisex, which I appreciate as women's restrooms seem to often have a line. We visited the UP in October 2020 to see the beautiful fall colors, and I'm not going to lie--we had trouble finding businesses that were taking COVID seriously. Contrast Coffee is a diamond in the rough! They had a sign in the front saying that if you don't have a mask that you don't get coffee. Everyone was wearing masks inside and the one couple dining in was far enough away that we could easily distance from them. The interior is actually pretty big--certainly bigger than you would guess based on the exterior. There's another cozy back room with more seating that I would have loved to spend time in if it weren't for the pandemic. (I'm bookmarking this in my mind for our next visit.) There is also a small merch shop with big mugs with the perfect Contrast Coffee branding. I also loved the menu offerings. We both got quiche here, and I was thrilled to see they had a vegan quiche (my husband had one with meat). Again, definitely not really the norm in the area to have a vegan offering, so I was impressed. We also enjoyed a tasty double chocolate chip muffin. I love Contrast Coffee, and I can't wait to make this our regular stop when we visit this area. read more

I am a resident of Seattle, teaching classes from the road, as I wind my way back to the west coast - long story. BUT as I was going through Ironwood last week, it became time for me to settle into a wifi situation to teach three classes. Contrast Coffee was recommended. I found the cafe, introduced myself, and told them what I had to do. Without hesitation, hey set me up in their back room - where I literally rolled around on the group and acted like a T Rex and etc with a bunch of K-2 theatre students in Seattle! The quiche was also quite good. So was the coffee! I felt very very fortunate to have found such a nice spot with such friendly people at a moment when I needed wifi and privacy for a good long chunk of time. After a several hour drive and a decent hike in WI (St. Peter's Dome State Natural Area), I was getting pretty tired but still had a few hours to go in my road trip to the U.P. I didn't expect much from this area in terms of local coffee, but then Contrast Coffee showed up on yelp. This place was great! I had a cappuccino that was perfectly made, and gave me the energy I needed to drive a few more hours in my road trip. On my way back to Minneapolis, I made sure to stop here again. The blueberry scone was great, and so was the quiches, I'd say veggie was better than meat, but both were great. I bought some beans to take home and can't wait to have a cup of coffee with the memories of finding this hidden gem in the U.P.! read more

The pastries were AMAZING! Cinnamon roll muffin was moist and delicious. The chocolate chip scone was equally as good, and very moist for a scone. So yummy. We did not have their house roasted coffee but I expect it is a delight. There seemed to be lots of regulars grabbing some afternoon coffee, chatting and catching up on the news. I had the iced lavender latte and it was yummy! My husband ordered a mocha and it had good flavor but could have been hotter, it was probably around 130. This has become my new go-to coffee shop after moving to the area recently. The prices are maybe a little high for the area, but super cheap compared to Portland OR where I'm from. All the food and drinks I've tried are fantastic. I love that they give discounted refills on drip coffee, because I like to stay for a couple hours and "work from home." Lots of comfortable seating, outlets, and fast, reliable Wi-Fi. The baristas are super sweet and friendly, and have helped me feel welcomed to the area! Cannot recommend Contrast enough :D read more
