There was a band and the bar was packed, tables were full so we sat outside, k like that they gave a large free parking lot so it's easy to find a spot close by. I have no clue why the heaters weren't on, it was 59 degrees out when we left early because it was just too cold. Cuban sandwich was very good. I really liked the bread and the fries are my favorite. The service was a bit strange. We stood at the hostess stand with no one saying anything to anyone until I let her know we would just sit outside. My husband and I went here and enjoyed it. It was crowded but we got seated fairly quickly. Got the wing special which was dill pickle. We both felt there could have been more seasoning on the wings. It was very mild. I got the Ruben which was delicious. I paid for the up charge of a Cesar salad side but don't think it was worth it. My husband got the French dip which he liked. First time here and it won't be the last. We sat at the bar on a Saturday at 4PM and the place was bustling. We were lucky to snag the last 2 seats. Note - if you visit this bar don't sit at the seats in the far corner. We learned that this is where all the wait staff fill soft drinks for the entire restaurant directly in front of you! Anyway, the bar staff was efficient and friendly, made great cocktails, and never left you waiting with an empty glass (a big plus in my book) For our food we shared the salad special with a pumpkin maple dressing. It was fantastic and a nice portion. We also split a Rueben that was up there with one of the best we've had anywhere. It came with fries but we opted to upgrade to the Contav fries (old Bay and cheese dipping sauce) which were great. This is a great restaurant on the main street in Yardley. There's outside seating on the porch. There are tables inside as well as a full bar. Allison P. was our server. She was friendly and helpful. We started with the Watermelon Caprese salad from the special menu then the Million Dollar Burger (also on the special menu) and the wings. The burger was juicy and delicious- I went through 5 paper napkins. It was on a pretzel roll with bacon and cooper sharp cheese. One of the best burgers I've had. I went here on a Saturday evening with my wife and two friends. We were promptly greeted by a young lady who took us to our table upstairs. They do have seating downstairs but it was full when we got there. Our waitress came quickly(wish I remembered her name) and welcomed us. We told her we were in no rush and wanted to take our time. The drink and wine menu was very nice. All 3 of them of them had wine and I had an old fashioned. It was very good. We ordered the wings and nachos. Both were good but the nachos would have been good with some queso on them. They were a little dry. I special which was the prime rib sandwich and it was very good. Fries were good. My wife and friend both had burgers and said they were delicious. My other friend had the salad and said it was good. The restaurant is in an old building that is really cool. It was very clean. After dinner we sat in the bar area to have some drinks and listen to the band. Service was great. This place gets packed on Saturdays. Get there early to get your seats. read more

One of those restaurants that has some great dishes and some great days and then the rest of the time everything is pretty much DJ Fridays. I think they get so much business with a really nice bar in the center of town that they are busy all the time and there's no need to compete with anything really and they can give you a lousy dish or a good dish and they don't really care. There's somebody else waiting for your seat and let me emphasize waiting. This was our first time at Continental Tavern and it surely won't be our last. My wife really enjoys a local spa in Yardley so we occasionally make the drive from South Jersey. She had an appointment on a Saturday so after walking around town for a bit I decided to stop in to the Continental Tavern for some food. The building itself is historic and the bar is beautiful -- exactly how I want every bar I frequent to feel and look. I started out with a non-alcoholic Heineken since I was driving but ended up switching to a delicious pumpkin beer they had on tap (there were actually a handful of craft beers on tap I would've loved to try). The bartender was fantastic -- attentive, very personable, and made some killer recommendations! I started out with 6BBQ Apricot wings. They were huge wings, which I usually prefer smaller wings, but these were crispy, not chewy at all, and the meat pulled away from the bone with ease. I also asked the bartender for something that's a must order off of the menu as I've never been before. Without hesitation she said the Reuben and then the Cuban. So I went with the Reuben and it was one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. The bread was buttery and toasted perfectly, the corned beef was stacked high and tender, and the ratios of sauerkraut and Russian dressing were spot on. This truly is a must-order sandwich. We even really enjoyed the fries that came with the sandwich -- thick, potatoey fries that were crisp. I saved half of everything I ordered for my wife who only had the sandwich & fries but she really loved both as well. Prior to us leaving the bartender assured us that we need to try the Cuban next time we visit. We will definitely be back to give the Cuban a shot in the near future. read more

Nice, place to get lunch if you are in town! Space is large enough to sit down, relax, stretch your legs and speak at a normal volume to your friends. Waitstaff was polite and easy going. I dined here for lunch, during the summer - no wait really to speak of. Don't worry if you cannot eat outside, the interior (dark wooded motif) is air conditioned and spacious. Lunch for four. Love the old tavern vibe. We all enjoyed everything...compliments to the chef. Lots of great choices on the menu...I changed my mind about 20 times. I don't think there is a bad choice...our choices were all delicious. The standout was the onion rings. Omg...I think they were the best I ever had. They definately set a high standard and I will be comparing all onion rings to these. Before I forget, our server, Kelly was excellent. She was timily, right on, didn't forget a thing and almost read our minds...brought extra napkins and refills as I was about to ask. I haven't visited the Continental Tavern in years, but the most recent experience I had reminded me of past visits. Simple standard fare, good service, friendly employees, and kid friendly for a good price. We were one of several families with children dining inside on this last lunch trip. They have some TV's with sports on that helped entertain my oldest and a highchair for the little one which was a bonus. A highchair that was actually clean was much appreciated! The kids menu is simple, but has all of the standards you would expect. My youngest had a grilled cheese with fries and the oldest had the pasta. They scarfed them both down with no complaints. My wife and I ordered salads and were very satisfied with them. Big portions, fresh ingredients and nicely plated. The wife and I came here as a dating couple BC (before children) for dinner/drinks and everything on this recent visit felt the same as back then - A friendly atmosphere, charming interior, historical past (read about it on their website) and a nice meal! As a local, the contav is one of the best places to eat in Yardley. It is very rare I have a bad experience there and the food is always good. I do my best to try something new every time I go, last visit was the nachos with chili which were *chefs kiss*. It is a smaller place, and if you are sat at a certain table in the bar area where the live music gets set up, you won't be asked to leave but the server will be pushy. Might be best to just not put a table there on nights with live music. Overall, it is never a miss, and we will continue to return. read more

Continental Tavern was a local favorite when we lived in Yardley over two decades ago, and it still is. This is a neighborhood bar in an historic building that was a stop on the Underground Railroad. Drinks and food are good. Service can be iffy, especially on a busy nights. There's a typical selection of hamburgers, sandwiches, wings, ribs, and salads. Check out the daily specials. Interior has a considerable amount of dark wood, and the place can get quite loud. Sports TVs throughout. Parking is in a lot shared with a CVS. read more

Looking for a spot where you can have something to eat and enjoy historical feature in Yardley, PA? There is this restaurant that boast on its historical value. It was an underground railway passage. We went for a tour after our lunch where the hostess showed us where the underground passage was. It was pretty interesting to see the past kept in pristine condition where you're able to peek in to see and touch a little bit of the past. The service was quick, we came in right before a wave of people starting to pour in, before noon. At first they served a small sized steak and the waitress said that we're going to have a second plate because the steak size was smaller than what it was indicated which was 8 oz. So they did well on that. The steak was ordered medium rare and was aged. I can tell it was aged because the texture of the meat was different, it almost melts in the mouth. I decided to ask the waitress if it was air dried for aging but apparently she's not sure so we asked the main hostess and she's not sure how long it was aged. Sometimes it well do well when hostess or waiters/waitresses know how their food was prepared because that adds interest to would be patron. Anyway, I'll go back for the steak alone. It's a bit pricey on the side but it's worth it. The mushroom soup is also pretty good, creamy texture with almost earthy taste. The salmon is just a ho-hum, you can tell if it's fresh based on texture of the salmon meat but this one is little bit on the dry side. Ambience is typical of a pub. Restroom is clean both upstairs and one near the bar. The place is pretty small and can be a little crowded. Just be prepared to look for a parking spot, it can also be really tight especially when you drive a bigger car like SUV or trucks. One more thing, they pass on to customers the cost on merchant fees when using credit cards which is about 2.5%. It's fully disclosed when you walk into the restaurant. Just pay in cash when you want to save up on dollars. read more

Visited the Continental Tavern while staying in Yardley Pennsylvania and the experience was amazing A historic Tavern in a beautiful town, with artifacts discovered while renovating the lower part of the building Incredible artifacts from the prohibition speakeasy era, but the most interesting was a secret room which was a stop in the Underground Railroad passage. Thank you to the General Manager Chris Mascio for the great video and tour! The food was amazing and delicious and staff and service excellent. Continental is your typical bar/restaurant with a bar section for about 20 people. I was surprised how crowded the restaurant was for a Tuesday night. The menu is pretty typical and we were spleasantly surprised by the portion size for the salad and rice bowl. Service was not quick but expected for the crowd. We've been here many times, and sadly, each experience has gotten worse than the visit prior. Servers here are generally friendly but not especially attentive, and there is a lot of turnover in the waitstaff. As far as food goes: burgers are usually quite good. The appetizers tend to come out at room temperature or cooler - very disappointing for a spendy $7 basket of fries. I can't recommend the Chicken Pot Pie because it is a very meager portion. Nor can I recommend the Boneless Chicken Tenders appetizer because I bit down into shards of bone in mine last night. The host or hostess in a restaurant like The Continental Tavern should be the face of the restaurant, the first impression making a friendly & welcoming greeting to patrons who are about to plunk down upwards of $50 for a meal for two or more people. Instead, what you get is a snarky, "How MANY?" and when you answer, the hostess turns her back on you, gathers placemats & utensils and wanders away because it's just too much trouble for her to say, 'right this way' or 'please follow me.' I like the atmosphere inside as well as on the porch in pleasant weather, but with the bad experiences I've encountered in my last few visits, I'm disinclined to keep returning. read more

This restaurant offers American staples that provide comfortable familiarity with a side of history. The Continental Tavern had several lives through it's over 200-year history and one of those lives was as a stop on the underground railroad. After the hearty black & bleu burger with sweet potato fries that I had, Chris, the general manager was so kind to take me a tour of the building. In the basement you can see the original foundation and bricks that created the tunnels for the enslaved to escape to freedom via the Delaware River which is two miles from this location. It's amazing how the former owners of this establishment were compelled to bring justice to the enslaved people that deserved to be free. During my visit, a local band was playing in the bar area and I was told that other events such as tarot readings take a place on a revolving basis. This is true gem in Yardley that everyone must visit for the food and history lesson. read more

Yardley PA has a very attractive downtown but not much is open for an early lunch on a Sunday so we ended up here by default, I only wish I lived closer so I could return. Setting **** We originally were heading for Vault Brewery on a beautiful late August Sunday lunch. In spite of Yelp saying Vault was open apparently they close between brunch (11:30) and lunch (12:30) so we walked down the street to find this restaurant on the corner. The main entrance is not overly obvious and we mistakenly went up the ramp and into the bar area. I'm glad we did though as it afforded me the opportunity to explore the space. The Continental is classic Pub/Tavern with dark wood and warm lighting. We sat outside on the front porch which was pleasant but noisy from street traffic. Service **** Since it seemed to be the only place in town open at 12:00pm they were busy and that definitely slowed service. But everyone from the bartender to the hostess to our server to the manager was very friendly. Our server, while overwhelmed, made suggestions with ease and generally seemed proud of the restaurant. Food **** At our servers strong suggestion we started with the Cheese Curds. I originally had no interest but thought I'll try just one, well I found myself practically fighting for the last one as they were quite addictive. We also started with the Pretzel Bites which were ok but I thought they were doughy and the adjoining Beer Cheese Sauce was oddly cold and congealed. For lunch I ordered the French Dip and it was fantastic. The Crab Fries were delicious as well but the unexpected surprise was the side of cheese sauce for dipping. A table mate had the Turkey Burger which she described as "actually really good not dry, not too turkeyee", which I think is a good thing. :-) My wife's Salad with Grilled Chicken was described as ok but I'm starting to think she is just getting bored since it's either a Salad or Salmon every time out. The laggard seemed to be another's Cheesesteak that was called forgettable. I've been here before (once or twice years ago) and remembered thinking it was pretty good. But I came this past Saturday and honestly, was not pleased. The cheese steak spring rolls were great, I will say that. But otherwise....I ordered the nachos with chili (instead of chicken) and got a plate of chips with cheese, and a cup of chili on the side (see picture?!). I've never seen that before? And it wasn't good like that. Was I supposed to dip my nachos in the chili? Or pour it on top of the lettuce (which would have been gross). I don't know if the waitress/kitchen forgot what I ordered, or if that's how it's normally served? If i had gotten the chicken, would I have gotten a cup of shredded chicken on the side? My sister asked for fries with her sandwich. About 10 minutes AFTER she got her her sandwich, the waitress brings her a basket with literally 7 fries in it and says "this is all the kitchen has right now...I can get you more later if you want." Umm..what? It was a little before noon and I saw maybe 8 other people in the restaurant, so they weren't slammed. Not really sure what was up, but also not really sure I'd come back.
