As Americans, we were interested in seeing the English take on a lot of our classic American diner dishes. I had the chocolate chip pancakes, my sister had cheese fries and macaroni and cheese (she has an intense love for cheese) and our friend had the burger with seasoned fries. I think the best things on the table were the pancakes and the cheese fries. It seemed to be ACTUAL cheese melted onto the fries instead of the fake "nacho" cheese that we get in the states -- even though the fake cheese is also delicious. The macaroni and cheese was a bit dry and in need of a bit more flavor, as was the burger. The pancakes? Awesome. They came out warm, fluffy, topped with a sprinkling of powdered sugar and a side of butter and maple syrup.

At this, they fail. Any Denny's will provide a better experience than this, without the London prices. Some complaints: after asking for sweetener for my coffee, I was informed they only have sugar or agave syrup. I asked for an omelette, and I was informed they were too busy to make omelettes, even though the menu offers scrambled eggs any way you like. How time consuming is an omelette? So I revised my order for 3 scrambled eggs with a side of bacon. They brought out two plates, with 2 eggs on each plate! The service was slow and unfriendly. This might be acceptable if it was a 24-hour diner, and I was there at 4 am with the clubbers and other freaks sobering up for the journey home. It was noon! I sense the people dining here were part of the bleed-over traffic from a nearby Breakfast Club, as there was no queue for a table at The Diner, unlike the competition on a Saturday morning. Apparently, this location is part of a chain. America isn't very popular these days, so these Londoners have a lot of cheek destroying the idea of one of the few good things you are usually guaranteed in the States: a friendly breakfast diner where you can get a bleedin' omelette when you ask! (One positive: they serve bottomless filtered coffee. There is that.)

Things were looking promising when I saw a vegetarian breakfast offered in lieu of the traditional English breakfast. I was drawn to the dish because it offered spinach and hash browns in lieu of all the meat in its partner dish. My friend ordered the regular Full English and her dish came out well before mine. I waited roughly 10-15 minutes longer for something that would appear to take less cook time. The plate came out and I noticed there was no spinach. I was not offered a choice as a substitute nor made aware of the situation. Long story short I ended up ordering the Full English and they forgot my black pudding. Waited additional time for that as well. Then they forgot I asked for the bill. Overall, I would not recommend it, especially if you're on a time schedule and multiple mishaps occurred. No cash accepted and 12.5% service charge automatically added to the final bill with the usual VAT.

Greasy Goodness…read more.. We were pleased when we stumbled into Ed's..... We were taken by surprise, and we liked it, we liked it alot. The little bustling restaurant definitely has plenty of atmosphere, we loved the Happy Days swinging 50s thing. The service staff were upbeat and good fun. It is a great place to take the kids or have a teenagers birthday party etc etc. But measured on the BURGETRON.... Not great... The food was cooked and presented like a slightly (and I mean slightly) up market Fish and Chippy. Not expensive but not cheap. The coke floats we so eagerly ordered weren't great either. A random hotdog glided past my eyes glossed in goo cheese and also sadly didn't look overly appertising either. We were a bit disappointed that the food wasn't very nice after being so excited initially, it was busy though so maybe on a quieter day the quality might be a little better. The menu was interesting and there were plenty of options including a choice of two Vege burger, cheesy fries, milk shakes, choc sundaes....all the usual Americana Diner things... It was loud and crowded so if you're looking to chill.... Best not go on the weekends... So in closing.... go and have a look...take the kids... it's no food destination but definitely fun... anyway ....as Fonzi would say.... Ayyyyyy!!!!!

While the chicken is definitely worth a visit at this place, what I most liked about it is the wonderful service that we experienced here. The owner and the staff were super-friendly and not helped us making up our minds when it came to the food, but they were also just very attentive. We ordered the Piri Piri Chicken, which turned out to be really spicy. The house salad on the side was terrific...really loved that! Thumbs up! I definitely recommend coming here if you're planning a visit to the Odeon Cinema.

You know you want to! "There's a party goin' on right here..." OK OK, sorry. I'm just overcome with excitement. I've lived in Holloway for 10 years - in that time, I've seen the opening, closure and re-opening of a hundred different pound shops, the invasion of greasy takeaways and worst of all, The Gaff being replaced by a Costa. It's about time something good happened to Holloway and I couldn't be more pleased that Chicks on Fire have joined the 'hood. The food is simply outstanding and everything is made fresh to order. Their specialty is the fantastic chicken (choose from 3 marinades and a variety of portion sizes). I can't remember exactly how it's cooked (it's explained on the menu) but I think there's a combination of steaming and grilling involved, leaving you with juicy, tender meat and a gorgeous crispy skin - exactly how it should be! VEGETARIANS, reprezent! There's an excellent selection for you too from delicious falafels wraps, stuffed pastries, hearty salads and a fantastic mezze selection. Oh my god, those dips and that guacamole! My veggie partner was over the moon. Not to mention all the side dishes like buttery corn on the cob that pops in your mouth, rice and beans and the almost holy triple cooked chips (done the proper way, thankyouverymuch). If you're eating in, everything is served on big slate trays and it looks as great as it tastes. You can also choose from a variety of different sharing platters and they do takeaway too. Chicks on Fire is far better than any of these 'trendy' chicken joints popping up across the capital - the prices are much more reasonable (I couldn't believe how cheap our bill was) and you don't have to eat in the company of annoying foodie scenesters who witter on about the nduja stew they had at a supperclub in a converted toilet in Peckham (it's the new Dalston, yah), as they twiddle their handlebar moustaches. The staff are lovely too and are clearly passionate about what they do. The first time we went, we ended up going back the next night for takeaway! Don't chicken out, say bye-bye to paltry poultry, show your support for this great little place, or I'll give you a good grillin'!
